When I was a child, we didnt stay inside watching TV in hot weather. We didnt own an air-
conditioner so in warm summer evenings we stayed outside on the porch for hours. We played games or
looked at comic books. My dad relaxed in his chair and smoked his pipe. Sometimes, he tried to do a
cross puzzle in the newspaper. Occasionally, some neighbours visited us on the porch. Then dad
stopped reading the newspaper and discussed current events with them. They argued about current
social problems.
