Kateb Yacine

Kateb Yacine was born on August 6th 1929 in Guelma. He came from a Berber family,
his father was a lawyer and his family followed him through his various assignements in the
country. Yacine attended the Coranic school as a child, then Lafayette college (now bougaa)
and enrolled the secondary school in Setif. After his mother’s death, his father sent him
to the high school in Bone (now Annaba), and there he met Nedjma a cousin of him with
whom he lived for eight months. In 1945, Kateb published his first collection of poetry, and
a year later he published Nedjma ,” le poeme du couteau”. Kateb died on October 28 th 1989
in Grenoble, France.
