1. Da Lat, which is surrounded by the great/imposing
hills and mountains, takes up/covers/is situated in a
large area on the Lam Vien Plateau..
2. The economic development of Vietnam has
to be viewed in the context of long periods
of wars. It is the context of long periods of
wars that has caused loss of people’s lives
and damage to property, public facilities and
resources.
3. Despite the great improvement in the woman
status, other things must be done to improve
women’s health, nutrition and education.
4. The television network is being established
throughout the country. Apart from the relatively
modern and long-standing television stations in Hanoi
and Ho Chi Minh City, 25 provincial stations were set up
in 1988. These relay the important transmissions of the
central TV stations and broadcast their own
programmes.
5. Nowadays, the world has been facing a number of
serious problems in spite of the fact that there
have been dramatic progresses in science,
technology and knowledge. One of the problems
is the
population explosion/boom in the
developing countries. The population is growing
in geometric progression while the production of
goods is growing in arithmetic progression.
6. Charles Dickens, who belongs to the school of critical
realism in the 19th century, is one of the greatest
novelists in the world. What we value in his works is the
criticism about evils and the contrast between the
wealth and poverty in the English bourgeois society of
his time/at that time. The world he describes is that of
the middle and lower classes in London.
7. The Vietnam’s Women Union is represented
in the National Assembly and its president is
entitled to attend the regular meeting of The
Council of Ministers where she can express
the Women Union’s view-points and propose
the regulations related to the Union.
8. The Vietnamese families have been affected
by the agricultural civilization. Due to the opendoor policy, the industrial civilization has
exerted a daily and hourly effect on the life of
Vietnamese families.
9. To reduce the costs while increasing accessibility of education for
disabled children, the government has launched a program of
education and community integration.
10. In recent years, to restore public order, Hanoi
removed a number of unofficial marketplaces
into designated areas. But out of the four
marketplaces targeted, only Dong Tam market
was moved from the Dong Da residential quarter
to the Dai La area.
11. Besides the investment from the State
budget, all the schools had to look for other
financial sources to buy teaching aids.
However, these sources made up only 13%
and 21% of the state budget for secondary
schools and universities respectively. .
12. The state budget revenues have approximately
achieved the level originally set. Regular expenditure
has been ensured, while irregular spending in support of
the areas hit/caused by/suffering from storms, floods
and droughts has been made. The budget deficit has
been kept at a permissible level of 3.6% of GDP in 1998,
down from 4.2% in 1997.
13 The comprehensive plan for the management of
Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park is regarded as
a prerequisite for the sustainable conservation of
heritage values that includes biodiversity,
ecological processes and scenic, cultural and
historical values.
14. The effects of a stroke vary greatly depending on
what part of the brain has been deprived of oxygen. If
blood flow is cut off from an area of the brain that
controls speech, the stroke will result in the inability to
express oneself through speech or writing. If the stroke
damages the brain area that controls motor skills, a
patient may have trouble walking.
15.
The irreversible loss of biodiversity has a serious
impact on the ability of maintaining species,
including humans to survive. Humans depend on
species diversity and healthy ecosystems
providing food, clean water and air and fertile soil
for agriculture. In addition, humans benefit
greatly from different medicines.
16. Despite many difficulties resulting from/caused by
severe weather, the agricultural production in our
province has made a number of positive changes,
playing a vital role in the economy, ensuring the food
security, creating the stable income and life of the
majority of the local peasants. The orientation of
transforming the agriculture structure has brought
remarkable achievements.
17. When the problem of worldwide population growth is
mentioned, attention is almost always paid to
fertility rates. Yet another side of the population
problem causing growing concerns is the movement
across the national borders of millions of people in
search of a better life. They have nourished a dream
of moving to greener pastures.

18. Outbreaks of the latest H5N1 strain among birds were
first spotted in Thailand and Vietnam in 2003. This
spread to several other countries in the region and has
now established a foothold in European countries. For
this reason, the EU announced that it would ban imports
of wild pet birds and impose stricter rules on the private
ownership of pet birds.
19. While exchanging emails via mobile
phones is the fashion among the youths,
setting up homepages as a means of selfexpression appears to suit elderly people
as the Internet allows them to link with
the world from their homes.
20. It appears/seems (to be) difficult to obtain
information or express oneself via the Internet.
But for elderly people who tend to stay home
and meet other people less often, the Internet is
the most suitable tool.
21. According to the Ministry of Education and
Training, Vietnam is planning to implement
bilingual curriculum in some tertiary subjects and
build two international-level universities which
will be at the same standards as other
universities in the region and the world.
22. The establishment of the two internationallevel universities is one of 33 action plans
devised by Ministry of Education and Training in
efforts to implement the National Assembly’s
education laws.
23. The first Mekong Sub-region Fair was held
at the Vietnamese Exhibition Fair Centre
where major products such as agricultural
products, sea products and handicrafts
were introduced.
24. What the World Health Organization fears is
that the H5N1 virus will change into form which
can pass easily between people and kill millions
in a global pandemic.
25. Almost 100 delegates from 11 countries
worldwide gathered in the resort city of Nha
Trang for an international workshop on the
sustainable development of coastal tourism
and the protection of marine environments.
26.The World Bank and The Swiss Agency for
Development and Cooperation are funding two
projects which focus on pollution caused by
vehicles, its public health effects and measures
to reduce pollution.
27.
According to Vietnam News Agency,
Vietnam is hoping to receive 3.2 million
foreign tourists this year with a record flow
of international arrivals reaching 2.9 million,
a 19% increase as opposed to last year.
28.The citizens of Sweden, Norway, Denmark
and Finland are exempt from entry visas for a
maximum stay of 15 days.
29. Before 1988, the effect of the banking system on
the
development
and
macro-economic
management was minimal. In order to encourage
the banking system to play a more constructive
role, the government has taken new measures
including the reorganization of the banking
system, the introduction of restrictive credit
policies, and new policies on interest and free
trade of gold in market.
30. It is significant that these overseas
Vietnamese always direct their attention to
their homeland, cherish a close link with their
families and preserve the cultural identity
which typifies the Vietnamese. In addition to
their support for their relatives, a number of
overseas Vietnamese have contributed to the
construction of their country and taken part in
relief movements to help those who suffer
from natural calamities. They have also
participated in the charity work.
31. The survey conducted by the VWU shows that
traditional contraceptive methods have been widely
used. The survey also indicates that 39% of married
women used modern methods; the most frequentlyused method is intra uterine device (IUD).
32. Nowadays people are inclined to worry too much
about their physical health. However, I would like
to lay stress on the importance of psychological
health. Being mentally healthy is very important,
and a truly healthy man is one who can enjoy the
proper equilibrium between his body and mind.
33. President Tran Duc Luong yesterday sent a message
to thank President Hu Jintao for China’s assistance in
rescuing Vietnamese fishermen in distress during
Typhoon Chanchu. The Chinese Government and related
authorities quickly mobilized rescue forces and saved
hundreds of Vietnamese fishermen. "We are deeply
moved by the warm sentiments and humanitarian action
expressed by the Government and the people of China.
On behalf of the Party, the State and people of Viet Nam,
I send you, the Party, the State and people of China, and
especially the rescue workers, our deep gratitude," said
Luong.
34. In a message sent to authorities and the people of
Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, Luong praised
the efforts of rescue workers and relevant sectors in
helping fishermen stranded out at sea to return home
safely.
35.
Deputy Chairman of the National Committee for
Search and Rescue
yesterday said three
Vietnamese ships with 104 fishermen were
expected to moor in Da Nang this morning. He
also said a total of 10 fishing ships had sunk and
six others were still missing. The rescue team is
continuing search and rescue work with the hope
of finding survivors.
36. The year’s first tropical storm – ironically
named ‘Chanchu’, the Chinese word for ‘pearl’ –
slammed into a fleet of Vietnamese fishing vessels
as they were seeking shelter after the typhoon
swiftly/suddenly changed direction from west to
north last week.
37.The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development
has required city and provincial people’s
committees and relevant ministries maintain strict
prevention of the epidemic. Localities are required
to closely manage infected animals and ban trade
and movement of infected animals. The culling of
infected animals will be implemented following the
health sector’s regulations. Vaccination should play
an important role in controlling a future foot-andmouth outbreak in Vietnam.
38. In 2005, trade returns of Samsung electronics reached
USD 233 million. But in 2006 this figure is estimated to be
USD 335 million. With the motto of “being slow but firm”, a
joint venture project named “Savanna” (Samsung Vietnam)
has come into existence and begun its operation with a total
investment capital of USD 78 million.
Samsung has
mobilized an investment capital of USD 300 million in many
fields such as electronics, synthetic fiber, houses for lease.
But the other projects in fields like heavy industry,
processing industry and construction are only feasibility
studies. Currently in Vietnam, Samsung is a big sponsor. In
addition to financing many big and small-scale sport
championships. Samsung has also granted USD 1.2 million
for foreign language study programs and gymnastic training.
39. The manufacturing sector expanded significantly during the
post-World War II reconstruction of the Philippine economy.
Government controls on imports promoted the development of
light industries that produced consumer goods for the domestic
market. In the 1970s the government created four special
economic zones designed to stimulate manufacturing for the
export market. Industries in these export-processing zones
receive incentives to produce traditional exports. The zones have
helped to stimulate foreign investment in the Philippine economy,
in part because they are exempt from certain taxes and
restrictions on foreign ownership of businesses. The success of
these zones has led to the creation of other types of special
economic zones, such as large industrial estates. Businesses
receive tax exemptions and other incentives in these zones. The
former U.S. naval base at Subic Bay, for example, is now a huge
industrial-commercial zone in Manila. Its modern facilities and
duty-free economic zone have attracted new export-focused
industries and foreign investment.
40. Vietnam has sought to maintain socio-politic
stability, develop economic and diplomatic
establishment in recent years. The positive legal
changes have had a tremendous influence on the
production, financial and commercial situations.
Vietnam is ranked as the world’s second-largest
rice exporter to Thailand because its agriculture
responded dramatically to free market. In
manufacturing and service activities the rapid
growth and change occurred in and around HCM
City. Much economic expansion was partially driven
by an influx of investment and technology from
some 2 million overseas Vietnamese in many
different countries worldwide, most of whom had
returned to Vietnam for their investment and
contacts with their relatives.
41. Only a year after the US embargo was
lifted, soft drink giants such as Coca Cola
and Pepsi Cola, which have enjoyed superior
advantages in capital, marketing policies
and
preferences
under
the
Foreign
Investment Law, have gradually eaten into
the market shares of local producers. Other
products are also in the same situation.
Saigon Beer has to compete fiercely with
breweries of foreign Joint-ventures. Local
detergent producers, although capable of
meeting domestic demand to the year 2005,
have driven into the corner by giants such
as Procter & Gamble and Unilever.
