Internship report – Huynh Minh Thu
INTRODUCTION
Internship is an indispensable part of any senior's education because they enable
them to gain experience in a working environment outside of the classroom. The
internship, on the other hand, will provide opportunities for seniors to begin
developing a sense of independence, self-awareness about their jobs, and updating new
knowledge about the career they are pursuing.
Translation is a rapidly growing industry during this time of integration. After
completing my studies at An Giang University, one of my ambitions is to work as an

interpreter. Therefore, the internship opportunity I had with Satellite Team in An
Giang Radio – Television Station was a great chance for learning and cultivating my
professional knowledge.
This is a report which expresses the outcomes of two-month of probation. It
reflects what I accomplished during training time, how I applied what I gained during
4 years at AGU in a practical working environment, and what I have learned from the
probation process at ATV.

II. Introduction about Satellite Team
1. Overview about the Satellite Team

Picture 4: Satellite Team’s deparment
The Satellite Team comprised four members belonging to the Program Office,
who is in charge of collecting and translating English and Chinese newscasts from
CGTN, Alzazera, NHK, and BBC channels into Vietnamese. “Everybody in the team
is now separate into two shifts on duty, each shift taking turns in charge of translating
eight news and some entertainment programs every week.", Ms. Ngoc, the ST member
as well as my supervisor, said.
2. The ST’s work description
During the past two months, I have had the opportunity to learn about how the
Satellite Team’s working environment. In my view, with the sheer volumes of news
today, the staff here must be operating at an entire capacity to be able to produce
newscasts as swiftly and accurately as possible. Everyone, on the other hand, works
diligently, flexibly, and highly concentrated on getting the highest quality translations.

Picture 5: Facilities of Satellite Team
The primary task of the ST is to translate into Vietnamese and edit news from
foreign stations in order to provide viewers with the most up-to-date information from
around the world. Staffs at ST will listen and translate the latest news from mainstream
channels, such as NHK (Japan), BBC (UK), CGTN (China), AI Jazeera which were
directly recorded live by the satellite receiver. The fully done translation will be sent to
the editor for recording. Lastly, staffs at the Technical Team will be answerable for
handling the audio and visuals before the news is on the air.

B. THE INTERSHIP WORK
During nearly two-month practicum which from 24

th

February to 14

th

April, I

had the opportunity to try my hand at interpreting foreign news, which I had not done
while being at my university. In addition, working at ATV is a bit dissimilar from
many other internship companies in that we mostly work from home rather than going
to ATV on a daily basis.
I. Internship activities
On the first day, we received a brief introduction of ATV and an internship
assignment by Ms. Ngoc, a supervisor and a member of ST. Besides, we also visited
some ATV offices and saw how news was gathered from foreign channels. Regarding
the internship mission, my team is separate of 11 members divided into two subgroups.
Our main task is to translate short international newscasts into Vietnamese, a total of
15 videos from 45 seconds to 2 minutes in length. Generally, Ms. Ngoc sent her
feedback on the translations via email, and she also scheduled an appointment with us
every two weeks to review and revise the articles in person.
Every week, I worked in a group translating some pieces of news into both
Vietnamese and English at home. That is the first time I've tried my hand at listening
and translating foreign newscasts, which I've never done in my university. I honestly
don't remember how many times I listen to the videos again while I'm leaving lots of
blank spaces in my notepad. It is such a novel and more challenging experience than I
anticipated, leaving me flustered and desperate at times. One of the most significant

challenges in listening to and interpreting news is that international editors speak too
quickly that it is difficult to grasp information about the political and economic terms
that I was not very good at. Nevertheless, it has been said that: "Diligence is the
mother of success", I resumed listening by slowing down the video's playback speed
and taking full advantage of my vocabulary and listening skills. Gradually, I regained
my enthusiasm and finished the translations as accurately as I could.

th
In the fourth week (March 24 , 2021), each person was assigned some personal

exercises and audio recordings in English to get a more objective appraisement. In
particular, not only did we record at home and send the recording file to Ms. Ngoc, but
we also had the opportunity to record at ATV. It can be said that this is the task in
which I am most assured because it is one of my favorite skills and I still practice hard
on it every day.
th
In the fifth week (March 29 , 2021), we were assigned the task of presenting
on the topic of the Covid 19 at ATV. The aim of this assignment is to assist Ms. Ngoc
in evaluating individual teamwork and speaking skills.
th
In the sixth week (April 6 , 2021), we were assigned a group essay writing

about how we felt when practicing at ATV. The supervisor was able to evaluate the
group's writing skills as well as consider what we had learned and our shortcomings

through this task. Furthermore, Ms. Ngoc and ATV will be aware of the trainees'
challenges and desires to better support the next internship.

II. Internship summary
1. Advantages
The internship opportunity I had with Satellite Team in ATV was a valuable
experience for learning and cultivating my professional knowledge.
First of all, despite spending most of my working time at home, I also had been
practicing in a working environment equipped with modern facilities at ATV. The
office was spacious and well-equipped, with air-conditioners, new computers, and
public wifi that create an expert work atmosphere.

Secondly, the ST team is highly professional, entertaining, and welcoming,
especially Ms. Ngoc, who has given us considerable support. It can be said that she has
put in a great deal of time and effort in directing and assisting us with the greatest
dedication. Her amiability and openness created a pleasant working atmosphere as
well as dispelling all of our feelings of shyness or anxiety from the very first days at
ATV. She always told us not to be embarrassed but to be at ease if we need any pieces
of advice. Consequently, Ms. Ngoc is both an instructor and a friend of all the trainees.
Thirdly, throughout the internship, I received a great deal of assistance from
AGU, my teacher - Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Guong, and my teammates, which resulted in
the best conditions for the trainee to complete the internship. AGU and our teachers
enthusiastically introduced us to the numerous internship opportunities. Furthermore,
they always establish a connection between students and internship agencies. I
consider myself extremely fortunate and be thankful for everyone's excitement and
attentive assistance during my internship.

2. Disadvantages and solutions
Besides the hugely favorable conditions that I have received, I also had to face
several difficulties.
Firstly, from the first week on the job at the ST, one of the main challenges I
faced was that my listening skill was not sufficiently good to up to par with the job
requirements. To illustrate, I always felt nervous and puzzled when I first tried
listening to foreign news for the first few weeks. When I heard from Japanese,
Chinese, and Arabic editors speaking English, I found it was difficult to keep pace
with the information they had just spoken while I regularly had only ever

communicated and listened to American English and British English.
Another stumbling block was my lack of skill in accurately translating and
using vocabulary. The majority of newscasts often deal with economic, political, and
social issues. I have to admit that my understanding of these fields is minimal. Since
then, I've made it challenging to correctly and fluently interpret information. Another
common mistake I made was incorrectness of word using and the vocabulary still has
many restrictions.
Thirdly, the time to go directly to the ATV is restricted. Every two weeks, I
came to ATV to meet with Ms. Ngoc to discussed and revise the translations.
However, although she is always available to help trainees indirectly through Email
and Zalo, in my opinion, the time being at ATV is somewhat restricted, which made
me found it hard to acquiring and accumulating knowledge.

3. Solutions
Despite facing these challenges, I have always endeavored to better my abilities.
Firstly, whenever I had leisure time, I enhanced my listening skills by watching
the videos repeatedly. Moreover, I began listening to English news broadcasts from
mainstream networks such as BBC and CNN accompanied by bilingual subtitles. I
think that listeners will adapt to the native accent and intonation if they listen to it
regularly. In addition, I listen to English newscasts from Japanese, Chinese channels to
learn and become familiar with their intonation and pronunciation.
Secondly, I've started reading both Vietnamese and English newspapers,
something I had seldom done before, to expand my vocabulary and enlarge my
knowledge in many fields and develop my translation skills. Not only does that good

habit allow me to strengthen my reading comprehension, but it also saves time. As a
result, both the accuracy and pace of my translation will gradually improve. In
particular, I concentrated mainly on articles or programs in the region of social,
economic, and political issues to cultivate my specialized vocabulary knowledge.
Finally, theory must go hand in hand with practice. In addition to tasks assigned
at ST, I often translated two newscasts articles from English to Vietnamese and
Vietnamese into English a day.

III. Lessons
This probation had provided me with a variety of valuable knowledge for my
future career. Besides, thanks to my supervisor's support, I realized and learned from
my mistakes.
First and foremost, I have built up numerous incoming knowledge that I did not
learn at university. Ms. Ngoc has imparted all trainees with a wealth of experience in
listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, especially translation skills. One of my
grandest advancements is I've already improved how to write sentences and choose
words more precisely.
Another experience I would like to mention here is soft skills. I learned and
trained myself to show professionalism from diminutive behaviors, such as dressing,
walking, abiding by company rules, and particularly teamwork skills. Team spirit is
equally important for me to fulfill my internship. Working on a team is the majority
activity in ST so I had realized and learned how to work together in coherence and
make good each teammate shortcomings.
Third, I have figured out how to handle my time effectively. Group work

performance can suffer immeasurable harm due to bad habits, such as tardiness and job
delays. Working in a professional environment as ATV has allowed me to partially
remove those habits while also improving the quality of my work and completing
assigned tasks efficiently.
