Norma Jeane
I did my report on Norma Jeane, also known as Marilyn Monroe. Norma Jeane was born on June
1, 1926 at the Los Angeles General Hospital. Her mother, Gladys, registered Norma in as Norma
Jeane Mortenson. Norma Jeane never knew her father's identity. Since Norma's mother was
mentally ill, Norma was fostered by Albert and Ida Bolender for seven years. Albert and Ida were
very strict with Norma and tried hard to raise her as an obedient girl. In 1934, her mom, Gladys,
cared for her for approximately one year until she passed away in 1935.
Once again, Norma Jeane was passed on to someone else, Grace McKee. Grace was the one to
spoil Norma Jeane. Grace inspired Norma and taught her everything that she needed to know -
from applying make-up to sitting like a lady with books balanced on her head. Unfortunately,
Grace had some financial difficulties and was forced to be wed. In 1935, Norma Jeane was
admitted to an orphanage for two years. Grace frequently visited Norma and took her to the
movies. After several years, when Norma was 12 years old, she went to live with Grace's aunt,
Ana Lower. Then, Ana developed health problems and could not take care of Norma any longer.
Norma went back to live with Grace and her Grace's husband, Ervin Goddard.
While living with the Goddard's, Norma met the neighbor boy, Jim Dougherty. On June 19, 1942,
right after her 16th birthday, Norma Jeane and Jim were married. The ceremony took place at 8:30
p.m. in the home of Chester Howell. Unfortunately, Jim was called to military service and Norma
Jeane moved in with her mother-in-law, Ethel. Ethel was working at Radio Plane and that is where
Norma found work too. She would just spray down the parachutes day after day. One day, a
photographer showed up to "cheer up the troops" and ended up taking some quality photos of
Norma Jeane. That is when she found her talent for modeling. It did not take long for Norma
Jeane to go professional with her career. However, it also meant the breakup of her marriage to
Jim. Some time later in her modeling career, Norma Jeane met photographer and agent, David
Conover. He got her connections into Hollywood.
Norma Jeane, now Marilyn Monroe, was an actress for 16 years. She made 29 films, 24 of which
were in the first 8 years of her career. As her acting career progressed, she improved her roles as a
supporting and leading actress. The first movie that I found was Dangerous Years in 1947.
Marilyn played a waitress and her role was cast at the bottom of the list of credits. In 1948
Marilyn's singing talent was acknowledged in one review in Ladies of the Chorus. In 1952, Don't
Bother to Knock listed Marilyn Monroe and Richard Widmark as the leads. Later on, she made
