Alpha Body Language
Body language and non-verbal communication make up 93% of all the signals we send out into the
world. The problem is that very few people are aware of their body language and how it can impact
their lives. We spend all our time practicing, reciting, and focusing on what we say. Unfortunately,
words make up only 7% of the message. But there are a few leaders who understand the power of
non-verbal communication and they are currently reaping the rewards. This book will teach you how
these Alpha leaders are changing the way we conduct business, interviews and sales, how we date,
and even how we interact with our families. Body language is a skill that can be quickly fixed and
you will begin to see numerous benefits. So download now and learn how to practice the art of Alpha
Body Language.
Chapter 2: The Hidden Language of Leaders
Non-verbal communication is slowly being taught to managers, leaders, and salesmen across the
globe. Study after study has shown a positive correlation between strong and confident body language
and stronger managers, better salesmen, and even an increase in romantic interests. Throughout
evolution, we have had numerous small signals and signs ingrained in our brain that we use when we
meet new people for the first time.
Within the first ten seconds of meeting someone, we automatically make a subconscious decision
about whether or not we like that person, whether we trust them, and where they rank on a power
hierarchy amongst our peers. This first impression can be the difference between delivering a clear
message when you speak and delivering a message that is incongruent. The best leaders will be
congruent with their words and their non-verbal communication, which creates a powerful one-two
punch to cement their message. Our goal is to teach you how to communicate with non-verbal
communication and strengthen the power of your words.
The Three Factors of Communication
When breaking down any conversation or method of communication, there are three distinct factors
that will influence the overall power and clarity of the message you are trying to deliver. Words are
the first factor that we will look at. They make up about 7% of your overall message. You can have
the best body language in the world, but if you are not making sense or your word structure is not
clear, you will not be able to communicate effectively. The good news is that most people have years
of social conditioning and communication under their belts. Communication, social building, and
rapport skills are usually not problems for leaders.
The second factor we are going to look at is vocal tonality and how you speak your message. Vocal
tonality makes up around 38% of your message. Many studies have shown the power of vocal rapport
and how it influences your audience members. Vocal signals such as pitch, speed, and common
“catchphrases” can dramatically increase your ability to create and build rapport almost immediately.
While we are all subconsciously aware of vocal rapport, very few people actually practice and hone
these skills.
Non-Verbal Communication
The focus of this book will be on non-verbal communication, specifically body language. Non-verbal
communication makes up 55% of the signals that you use when interacting with individuals. Very few
people pay attention to their body language, which can dramatically hamper their performance in both
their professional and personal lives. Poor body language can send mixed signals to everyone you
interact with on a daily basis. This will make it difficult for you to communicate with anyone and you
may find that you have a hard time connecting on a deeper level. Poor body language and posture can
make us seem depressed, anxious, and fake.
In the next few chapters we will cover different body language fixes that you can implement
immediately. You can change some bad habits straightaway, while others may take months or even
years to hone. Great motivational speakers and politicians spend months fine tuning their body
language to become congruent with their speeches. The good news is that once you become aware of
your body language and the body language of others, you can make the necessary changes and even
read other people’s body language more effectively.
Cognitive Dissonance
The main reason that body language is important is due to cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance
refers to two conflicting feelings that one person feels during a communication session. For example,
if you are trying to sell a client a new service or product, you may be telling the client all the benefits
and how this product is great, but your body language may show that you are lacking confidence and
you may come off as anxious. This creates two conflicting feelings in your client’s mind and will
cloud your sales pitch. They might be thinking, “Wow, this product sounds great, but something
doesn’t feel right about this situation.” Since body language makes up the majority of communication
signals, the client will eventually side with his subconscious and decide that something is wrong. If
you can avoid cognitive dissonance and instead use body language to reinforce your message, you
will be ahead of almost 90% of the population.
Trust + Rapport + Motivation = Leadership
If you are in a leadership position in your business or in your family, you need to understand the
power of the leadership formula. All great leaders throughout history understood that trust and rapport
are the key elements in leadership. Your followers will not listen to you if you they do not trust you
and if you fail to build rapport, they will question your motives. Add in some motivational speeches
and directly link features of your plan to how it will benefit, and you will find yourself with a strong
following. Non-verbal communication will impact each of these three factors and can transform you
into a powerful leader.
Chapter 3: Why Focus on Body Language?
We have hundreds of skills that we are constantly improving and we only have a limited amount of
time. So why body language? The main reason body language is ignored and other skills are practiced
instead is first that many people think body language can be broken down into a few basic skills.
Stand tall, stick your head up, and walk around with confidence. Unfortunately, proper body language
needs to be practiced day in and day out. Many people have had poor posture for years and will
revert back to this poor body language once they stop focusing. The goal of this book is to make sure
you are practicing proper body language from your subconscious mind. This will allow you to have
great body language at all times during the day. Let’s take a quick look at how this will influence your
life.
Relationships
Non-verbal communication plays a huge role in dating and relationships. When stakes are high and
you need to make a first impression, your body language will be the first signal that is interpreted.
Women especially have razor sharp senses and can pick up on poor body language immediately. They
will feel like you are hiding something from them and it will be difficult to create a deeper
connection. Compare that with body language that is sexy and confident, and a good first impression
will buy you a few more minutes to make your pitch.
It’s quick and easy to transform your appearance with a few body language fixes. One of the main
turn-offs for both men and women is a lack of confidence. Many people will hunch over, keep their
chins down, and take on an overall depressed look. This can negatively impact your overall
appearance. This fact gets compounded when we are in social situations, such as in bars, where we
feel anxious and uncomfortable. Changing your body language can lead to an improvement in the way
you find and form new relationships.
Family
If you already have a family established, you can strengthen these relationships with body language
fixes, especially if you have kids. Children naturally test your leadership skills as they always want to
feel safe and secure. If you buckle under their tests, they will not respect you. This leads to
misbehaving and mischief. If you can display strong leadership body language, you will create a
frame that will make them feel safe. They will trust your decisions and follow what you say.
Children, who have yet to learn how to identify stronger social signals, are emotionally led by
cognitive dissonance. They will test what you say to see if there is a conflicting message, and they
will fail to listen if they sense two different messages being communicated. You can solve this
problem by using dominant body language and communicating clearly with your children.
Sales
Sales is one of the few professions that acknowledges the power of body language. Salesmen are
always looking for an edge and large corporations are willing to put millions of dollars towards
market and research studies. These larges studies have confirmed the power of body language,
leading to the formation of large body language consulting firms. In the world of sales, it is all about
creating a strong and clear message. You need to communicate the features of your product or service
and link them to the benefits your clients will experience. Any disturbance in your pitch will result in
mixed feelings and anxiety on behalf of the client. Strong and powerful body language will make your
client feel at ease and comfortable throughout the process.
Management
If you are in a leadership position already, or you plan on being in a leadership position in the future,
you need to learn how to project confident and powerful body language. Your job as a manager and a
leader is to promote confidence, inspire, and communicate effectively with your employees. If your
employees are questioning your decisions, you will find a drop in workplace morale and
productivity. The first step to becoming a powerful manager is to make sure you are communicating
clearly and avoiding cognitive dissonance at all costs. Using body language to reinforce your point
and support your other communication channels will allow you to lead with power and ultimate
authority.
Corporate Success
Just because you are not in a leadership position at the moment doesn’t mean you should ignore body
language. Studies have shown that employees who project confidence and leadership skills are the
ones that rise the fastest to management positions. Even if you are in an entry level position, it is
never too early to start working on your body language. Body language is also a crucial part of the
interview process. Since you only have 30 minutes to make a good impression, body language will
make up a great deal of your interview. Taking control of it and practicing strong body language
habits will allow you to get the money, job, and position you deserve.
Money
Those who move through life confidently, with poise, and who are willing to lead, are very rare
individuals. Corporations will pay a high premium to hire these talents with both salary and
commissions. Many great entrepreneurs also have these talents and motivational skills. No matter
what job you are looking for or where you currently are in life, if you can change the way you
communicate, the money will follow. The great thing is that communication skills are teachable. As
long as you focus and turn your subconscious body language into a conscious habit, you can grow and
make progress. It may take months or even years, but developing and honing these skills will put you
in a position to succeed.
Mind Frame
The last benefit of proper body language and posture is mind frame. Studies have shown that your
body language can impact your mood and how you feel during the day. These studies have shown that
just by fixing your body language, you can feel more confident. This is a powerful concept that can be
utilized throughout the day. If you find yourself feeling down or depressed, take a look at your body
language. If you find yourself anxious and nervous, you are most likely practicing bad body language
habits. If you change your body language, you can also change your mood.
Chapter 4: Quick Fixes
Some body language habits can take months to adjust, while others can be fixed by just consciously
focusing and making small changes. Before we dive into the more complicated body language
patterns, we will devote a chapter to helping you fix a few bad habits so you can start to see
immediate results. While these fixes are easy, you need to make sure you are consciously aware of
your body language at all times. Remember, you may have had poor body language for your entire life
and these poor habits are going to be hard to break. Make sure you pay extra attention to your body
language when you feel nervous. This is most likely when old habits will start to show themselves
again.
Legs
The legs provide a strong base for your body and offer you support. Just like a house, if you do not
have a solid foundation, your overall appearance will be weak. When standing, you want to make
sure you keep your feet at shoulders’ width apart. Your toes should be pointing slightly outward,
which helps with your balance.
A great exercise to test your foundation is to have a friend gently poke you in the chest with their
finger. If you fall backwards or need to take a step to rebalance yourself, your foundation is weak.
Keep trying this test until you no longer move when poked. This is the solid foundation you need and
should display throughout the day. Remember, if you have a weak foundation you will have an overall
weak appearance.
Chest
Your chest is extremely important when it comes to body language and your overall image. Your
chest is a signal of strength for males and a signal of attraction for females. Failure to display proper
body language habits with your chest will significantly impact your appearance. The chest is also
responsible for regulating your breathing habits, which we will cover a bit later. If you do not have an
open and exposed chest, you will not be breathing properly. This will raise cortisol production in
your body and subsequently your anxiety levels. An open chest promotes strong breathing patterns and
will lower your anxiety levels. So if you find yourself feeling nervous, try opening up your chest and
breathing slowly.
A closed chest is one of the most common body language problems that people experience. Closing
and protecting your chest is a natural instinct to keep your vital organs safe. After thousands of years
of evolution, we naturally protect the heart, which happens to be a very important vital organ, when
we feel anxiety. When we are faced with a new, dangerous, or uncomfortable situation, our first
instinct is to close our chest or protect ourselves with our arms. You will see this phenomenon all the
time in clubs and other social settings. Most people will block their chests with their drinks, arms, or
purses. This is a key sign that they are feeling uncomfortable with the situation. When you approach
someone with a closed chest, you subconsciously display anxiety and your partner will in turn mirror
this and block their chest. This leads to uncomfortable breathing patterns and a very awkward
conversation.
The best way to keep your chest exposed is to slide your shoulder blades back and stick your chest
out into the air. Your arms should be slightly behind your chest. Having an exposed chest displays
confidence to the world and shows that you are not afraid of any threats. Take a few deep breaths
through your chest and breathe slowly. This will release your anxiety and make you feel at ease in any
situation. Make sure your spine is erect and straight. Whenever you begin to feel anxiety or nerves,
check your chest as you're most likely closing it. Always make sure you are never crossing your arms
or covering your chest with your drink, purse, or papers and folders.
Arms
How you display, control, and use your arms can also signal your overall confidence level. Great
leaders use their arms to animate and inspire an audience. Most people have trouble with their arms
and move them in short, quick motions, making them appear anxious and unsettled. Worse yet, they
feel uncomfortable resting their arms on their body and will shift their arms around trying to find a
comfortable spot.
Many people, especially when speaking in public, will keep their arms stiff and at their sides. This
makes them look unnatural. The best place for your arms is down by your sides, directly across from
your navel. This will give you a natural look and will also help promote positive breathing habits.
We recommend that you keep both arms slightly bent and touching your hips across your navel. You
can also keep your hands on your belt or in your pockets, or clasp your hands together and hold them
over your navel. Be sure you never raise them and block your chest. We also recommend clasping
your hands behind the small of your back. This will lead to your chest sticking out and is a great way
to promote strong body language.
When you are engage in conversation, we highly recommend you use your arms and hands to
emphasize different points and lighten your conversation. You also want to make smooth and
controlled motions with your arms and hands. Acting too quickly will make you seem nervous.
Always move in a slow and controlled manner. Think James Bond. He moves in a cool and concise
manner with as little effort as possible.
Head
After your audience analyzes your base, chest, and arm position, they will begin to focus on your
head. They will analyze your head position and any head movements that you make. Make sure that
you keep your chin up and avoid dropping your head, which will signal a lower status and make it
difficult for you to lead. Focusing on keeping your chin up and your chest out will quickly improve
your body language. The saying, “Keep your chin up,” is popular for a reason.
Controlled Breathing
The one aspect of body language that is constantly ignored, even by so called body language experts,
is breathing. Breathing is imperative when you are trying to control both your anxiety levels and your
overall body image. When you are feeling nervous, your body will flood your brain with adrenaline
and cortisol. These are the hormones that trigger your fight or flight reflexes. When these chemicals
are released, you will feel anxiety, your heart rate will increase, your vocal pitch will raise, and you
will begin to speak faster. All these factors will give you a nervous image. Remember, we want you
to appear calm and confident. You cannot achieve this image if you are not breathing properly.
Breathing is a subconscious activity and very few people actually understand how to breathe
properly. Unless you have taken yoga or meditation classes, you may never think about how you
breathe. But if you can learn how to properly breathe, you can relax both your body and mind when
you are feeling stress. This will allow you to take your emotions out of tough decisions and instead
use the logical side of your brain. Studies have shown that when we are stressed, blood exits our
brain and flows towards our muscles as we prepare to fight. If you can reverse this trend, you can
remain in control of any situation, no matter how stressful.
There are many books that you can study on different breathing techniques, but we are going to
quickly go over a technique that will help you out immediately. You first want to take a deep breath in
through your nose. Hold for three seconds and release through your mouth. Try to breathe through your
stomach and navel region. Expand your stomach when you breathe in and contract when you breathe
out. After five minutes of breathing through your stomach, you should switch to breathing through your
chest. Expand your chest when you breathe in and make sure you slide your shoulder blades back. On
the exhale, contract your chest but keep your shoulder blades back. It is very important to do these
exercises while standing and in a proper position.
When you find yourself in any situation that causes you anxiety, we highly recommend you take a few
moments to collect yourself and try this breathing exercise. It can be before an interview or meeting,
or when you meet a person for the first time. If you can move your breathing habits from subconscious
to conscious, you will be able to control your anxiety levels. If you can control your anxiety levels,
you will have a much better chance of maintaining proper body language.
Deep breathing exercises will automatically relax your body and you will find yourself in a more
powerful position. If you want to try an experiment, put yourself in a poor body language position and
trying your breathing exercises. It will be very difficult to breathe. This is the reason that poor body
language can impact your entire body. It constrict your breathing, which leads to poor circulation and
an increase in cortisol production. It’s a downward spiral and it all starts with proper body language
and breathing habits.
Switching From the Subconscious to the Conscious
The number one skill you need to develop is moving your body language habits you’re your
subconscious to your conscious control. This means that you become aware of your own body
language and the body language of others without having to think about it. This will not only improve
your own body language, but it will enable you to pick up on subtle clues that other people give off
with their body language. This may help you communicate and decipher people’s true intentions.
Try to make it a habit to analyze your body language every time you enter a new room. This way,
before anyone can make a first impression, you know you have your body language under control.
When you are feeling anxious, you need to make a conscious decision to evaluate your body language.
The more you check yourself and make the necessary changes, the faster your good habits will be
internalized.
Chapter 5: Creating Passion
The best leaders throughout history have been great at creating passion and motivating any audience.
Whether you are communicating with one individual or with a large audience, you need to be able to
motivate. Failure to create passion will blur the message you are trying to communicate and create a
sense of doubt amongst your audience. This chapter will be devoted to ways in which you can create
passion.
Great Leaders
A common trait of a great leader is to inspire and motivate their audience when times are tough. When
everything is going great, anyone can motivate and inspire when they have data to back up their
points. When momentum is in your favor, it’s very easy to paint a grand picture for the future. The test
of a true leader is the ability to motivate and inspire when times are tough. No leader was better than
Winston Churchill. He was able to inspire and lead a nation in spite of a terrible situation. These next
few techniques will allow you to motivate even against the worst odds.
Building Rapport
In order to create passion, you first need to build rapport and make your audience comfortable.
Building rapport before you start motivating will allow you to connect with your audience and make
the motivation part much easier.
Facial Expressions to Build Rapport
Using facial expressions to build rapport is one of the most powerful techniques at your disposal. In
both intimate and large settings, utilizing your facial muscles will allow you connect with your
audience.
Indeterminate Smile
The number one reason that many people fail to build rapport is because they fail to smile. Many
people think having a stern face will make people take them seriously. This is not the case. You need
to make sure you are practicing warm facial expressions, and the best way to do this is with a smile.
When you first meet someone, a smile can make a huge difference.
There is a difference between a genuine smile and a fake one. With a genuine smile, all the muscles in
your face will be used and your eyebrows will slightly raise. A fake smile only utilizes the muscles
around your mouth. If you are going to be utilizing an indeterminate, smile you need to make sure your
smile is genuine. Practice in the mirror, making sure you utilize all your facial muscles. A fake smile
can actually create conflicting signals when you are communicating.
Eyebrows
The eyebrows also play an important role in developing facial rapport with your audience. When we
are familiar with the person we are talking to, we automatically raise our eyebrows. This gives the
impression that we are warm, open, and interested in what that person is saying. Unfortunately, a
mistake that most people make is keeping a cold face with minimal eyebrow movement. This is
usually due to high levels of anxiety. But if you make it a habit to raise your eyebrows when you are
speaking to someone, it can have a dramatic impact on how warm your face appears. You will also
find that the person you are speaking to will mirror this interaction and your conversation will begin
to flow with less effort.
Slight Head Tilt
When you are listening to your audience respond, you may want to shift your head slightly to the side.
This is an easy habit that will imply you are listening to the person that is speaking to you. When
someone feels you are listening, they will immediately be more relaxed and you will be able to build
comfort. On the other hand, if your head is still and your eyes are looking around the room, your
audience will become anxious and you will lose rapport.
Gestures
If you are speaking to a large audience, gestures provide a great way to create passion. Great leaders
and great speeches throughout history all show examples of gestures being used. If you watch these
speeches you will notice that all the gestures take place near the face. This is because the audience is
naturally looking at your face; lifting your arms and making gestures will allow you to emphasize the
point you are making. Everyone is different when it comes to gestures and you need to find the ones
that work for you, whether it’s a fist pump, a hand chop, or a point to the crowd. You need to do what
you are comfortable with and try out different gestures, but never underestimate the power of gestures
if you are trying to motivate an audience.
Holding Your Audiences Attention
The next chapter will be devoted to teaching you how to hold an audience’s attention, whether you are
speaking to one individual or a group. One of the main reasons that a message is not delivered or
understood is usually a lack of focus by your audience. Attention spans are currently at all time low
due to numerous factors. As a leader, you need to make sure you position yourself with positive body
language and use the following techniques to make sure your audience is engaged and focused.
Engagement
The process by which you hold your audience’s attention is called engagement. Keeping your
audience engaged will result in them giving you their full attention, thus ensuring that your message is
clear and understood. There are two ways to create and hold engagement with an audience of any
size. The first is to use repetition of both vocal and body language gestures. The second is to make
sure your conversation style is suited for the message you are trying to convey. A combination of both
these concepts will strengthen your message and keep your audience engaged.
