Almost a hundred thousand people was killed and half a million homes were
destroyed as a result of an earthquake in Tokyo in 1923. The earthquake began a |
minute before noon when the inhabitants of Tokyo were cooking their midday
meals. Thousands of stoves were overturned as long as the earth began to
Shake. As a result, small fires broke down everywhere and quickly spread. The
fire engines were prevented for going to help because many of the roads had
cracked open. It was impossible to use firefighting equipments as most of the
water pipes had burst. Consequently, over ninety percent of the damage caused |
by fire rather than by the collapse of the buildings. Most of those who died were |
not killed in the earthquake themselves but in the fires which followed.

Part 2. Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question. (5.0 pts)
Why the Internet so addicting? There are two reasons: information and freedom. People go online to get
information (music, news, stock prices, etc). Logging onto the Internet is like a kid going to a toy store;
there is so much to do and explore that once you get in, you never want to leave. People also go online
because the Internet offers freedom to do whatever they want, to say whatever they want and to be
whoever they want.
This could have a negative effect since people will act in certain ways and say certain things that they
otherwise wouldn'‘t do in real life. Furthermore, because the Internet offers so much freedom, you can
find your ideal so much easier, but it is not the same as your social self. The difference is due to you
talking to a computer screen and you talking to a real person. Thus, the experience we encounter on the
Internet are not the same as the ones we encounter in real life.
Even though our over-use of the Internet can cause a conflict between your virtual self and your social
self, many still excessively rely on the Internet for their activities. As a result of information and freedom,
the Internet has become an unbreakable addiction for individuals and society. Computers are as common
as televisions in households; in addition, laptops and Internet-ready cell phones enable the Internet to
travel with us.
1. It can be learnt from the first paragraph that
A. People are not willing to give up the Internet
B. The Internet gives you freedom
C. Information is what the Internet’s all about
D. The Internet is like a toy store
2. Which of the following best replaces “addicting” in line 1?
A. Fascinating
B. Memorable
C. Enjoyable
D. Realistic
3. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT.
A. On the Internet, you can be a different person from who you really are.
B. There is a big gap between what we encounter on the Internet and what there is in real life.
5
C. People make excessive use of the Internet for many activities.
D. Computers now replace television in every household.
4. What are the ways the Internet can travel with users?
A. Via computers and laptops.
B. Via Internet-ready cell phones and computers.
C. Via laptops and Internet-ready cellphones.
D. Via computers, laptops and Internet-ready cellphones.
5. What does “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. That Internet offers too much freedom.
B. That people lie about who they are.
C. That people can explore huge information.
D. That people never want to leave once they log onto the Internet.

Part 3. Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question. (5.0 pts)
A desert is a hostile, potentially deadly environment for unprepared humans. In hot deserts, high
temperatures cause rapid loss of water due to sweating, and the absence of water sources with which to
replenish it can result in dehydration and death within a few days. In addition, unprotected humans are also
at risk from heatstroke.
Humans may also have to adapt to sandstorms in some deserts, not just in their adverse effects on
respiratory systems and eyes, but also in their potentially harmful effects on equipment such as filters,
vehicles and communication equipment. Sandstorms can last for hours, sometimes even days.
Despite this, some cultures have made hot deserts 'their home for thousands of years’, including the
Bedouin, Tuareg tribe, and Pueblo people. Modern technology, including advanced irrigation systems,
desalinization and air conditioning, has made deserts much more hospitable. In the United States and Israel
for example, desert farming has found extensive use.
In cold deserts, hypothermia and frostbite are the chief hazards, as well as dehydration in the absence
of a source of heat to melt ice for drinking. Falling through pack-ice or surface ice layers into freezing water
is a particular danger requiring emergency action to prevent rapid hypothermia. Starvation is also a hazard;
in low temperatures the body requires much more food energy to maintain body heat and to move. As with
hot deserts, some people such as the Inuit have adapted to the harsh conditions of cold deserts.
1. What is the main idea of the reading text?
A. troubles that humans have to face in a desert
B. desert storms and desert inhabitants
C. hot deserts and cold deserts in the United States
D. desert hospitality and environment
2. All of the following statements are problems for an unprepared man in a hot desert EXCEPT?
A. sandstorm
B. loss of water
C. irrigation
D. heatstroke
3. The word “hostile” in the first paragraph is closet in meaning with
A. unbalanced
B. arid
C. fertile
D. unfriendly
4. According to the passage, which sentence is true?
A. No one can survive in both hot and cold deserts.
B. Modern technology makes deserts more hospitable.
C. In the United States, all deserts are quite uninhabited.
D. There are no deserts in Israel.
