1. Formal qualiica ons gained from a pres gious university can enhance students’ career
prospects.
2. Students should par cipate in extracurricular ac vi es while pursuing ter ary educa on.
3. In this knowledge-based society, people who are well-educated are likely to become more
inancially comfortable.
4. Doing part - me jobs will not only help broaden student’s horizons but also cul vate their
prac cal skills, which can open the door to be er job opportuni es in later life.
5. It is unfortunate that ter ary educa on do not provide students with hands – on experience
which are important when students start looking for employment.
Bài t p 2
There are many beneits of pursuing ter ary educa on. Firstly, a university degree will open
the door to be er job opportuni es. This is because universi es ofer students a holis c
learning environment, where students can not only have a chance to acquire theore cal
knowledge but also cul vate prac cal skills. Secondly, students are usually encouraged to
par cipate in extracurricular ac vi es while pursuing higher educa on. This will enable them
to improve so skills such as teamwork and communica on skills.

It is neither possible nor useful to provide university places for a high propor on of young
people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
(IELTS Wri ng Actual Test 12/1/2017)
Bài m u
Some people might argue that providing ter ary educa on for the majority of young people
is not possible and useful. Personally, I agree with these ideas and will outline my reasons in
the essay below.
Firstly, having a university degree no longer has a vital role to the future of young people
even in this knowledge-based society. In many countries, especially Germany, voca onal
training has gained more popularity among young people because it enhances employment
opportuni es as well as job security upon comple on. Furthermore, if everyone could get
admi ed to college, it would lead to imbalances in the workforce that would greatly damage
the economic structure of a country. This is because there is li le chance that university
graduates would choose blue-collar jobs such as working in factories, over the jobs that they
are qualiied for.
Secondly, I think that it is impossible to provide almost all young people with access to
ter ary educa on. In Vietnam, the demand for entering college never ceases to grow. This
puts the government in a dilemma of whether they should risk alloca ng their resources and
possible face a inancial predicament due to exorbitant educa on costs in many inancially
independent universi es, such as the Na onal Economics University. Furthermore, it is simply
unrealis c for universi es to accommodate such a sudden increase in the number of students
on campus, not to men on the fact that most departments are currently short-stafed.
In conclusion, I strongly oppose the idea of dispensing university educa on to a high propor on
of young people owing to the arguments presented above.

Nowadays, some employers think that formal academic qualiica ons are more important than life
experience or personal quali es when they look for new employees. Why is it the case? Is it a posi ve
or nega ve development?
Bài m u
In this increasingly compe
ve society, academic university degrees are considered to be
more essen al than hands-on experience by some employers when they seek new candidates.
Although there are some underlying reasons for this, I s ll believe that this is completely a
nega ve movement.
There are two factors to explain why some job recruiters prefer university qualiica ons to
life experience when recrui ng new employees. Firstly, in many professions, formal academic
degrees seem to be the top priority of many employers when selec ng new applicants. In
order to become a doctor, for example, a candidate has to acquire a great deal of medical
knowledge at university as well as spend a lot of me to prac ce and carry out experiments.
Secondly, this trend might be a great way to save me for employee recruiters. Compared
to formal academic candidates who are likely ready to start working, employees may have to
spend me on training non-academic applicants how to work properly. Therefore, this saved
me can be used in other valuable ways.
However, I think that this is a nega ve development and both academic and non-academic
job hunters should receive equal chance in the recruitment process. This is because many
people decide to work right a er school instead of star ng ter ary educa on in order to
gain life skills and prac cal experience. On top of that, a er a long me of working in a real
work environment, people are also capable of doing most assigned tasks without a formal
academic educa on. The typical example can be seen in the case of Steve Jobs, a founder of
Apple, who was the most successful person in the technology industry without holding any
formal educa on in this ield.
In conclusion, this trend is a ributable to two main reasons, and I believe that this is a nega ve
progress for the above-men oned arguments.

Many people say that universi es should only ofer places to young students with the highest marks,
while others say they should accept people of all ages, even if they did not do well at school. Discuss
both views and give your own opinion.
Bài m u
In today’s society, where the acquisi on of knowledge is the key to be er career prospects,
having access to ter ary educa on is a life-changing opportunity for many students. However,
some claim universi es should only accept young students with the highest grades, while
others believe every student, regardless of age and academic ability, should be given equal
educa onal opportuni es. I will discuss both views and state my opinion in the following
essay.
Firstly, high school students with higher grades are more deserved to a end university as
their grades somewhat imply that they have superior academic skills compared to their peers,
be it a be er memory, logical thinking or me management skills. Therefore, such students
are more likely to handle the immense workload and pressure at university. Moreover,
ofering university places to only a limited number of students would result in high-quality
undergraduates. For example, most pres gious colleges in Vietnam, whose acceptance rates
are low, only recruit the highest scorers in the na onal university entrance exam to make sure
that all of the universi es resources are available for students who have a higher chance of
success.
As sensible and beneicial as it is, many people oppose the aforemen oned idea since they
believe that only accep ng young academically-gi ed individuals is unfair to older students
or those who do not do well at school. Firstly, a student’s s age or performance at school does
not always relect their poten al to succeed at university. Thus, it is unethical to deny access
to ter ary educa on to some students, especially in a world where formal qualiica ons are
of great importance in gaining employment. Also, there is more to college admissions than
just academic performance. In fact, many well-known universi es in America, like Harvard or
Yale, not only accept academically gi ed students but also those who are par cularly gi ed
in sport or art. This helps to maintain a diverse community, where each student is valued and
rewarded for what they are good at instead of just academic excellence.
In conclusion, although only accep ng students with high marks is advantageous in some
ways, I believe providing university places for all students is more just and beneicial in the
long run.
