INTRODUCTION
1. Background
In recent years, school violence is a complicated development, in which
bullying is an alarming problem in children and adolescents worldwide. Notably,
while traditional bullying cases, face-to-face bullying, tends to decrease, the number
of bullying cases claims via the internet tends to increase and become a common
problem of teenagers today. According to a journal article of VnExpress about
Vietnam youths struggle with cyberbullying (2019), a total of 170,000 people aged 13
to 24 were polled in 30 countries. This number has included 1,788 in Vietnam.
According to UNICEF Vietnam, Henrietta Fore (2019) said that young people
worldwide are being bullied online, "…it is affecting their education, and that they
want it to stop,…". Cyberbullying is a severe issue that occurs among adolescents age
18 – 24. This research will discuss students' perspectives about bullying online as the
topic is about cyberbullying, especially IBD students. In this research, some effects
will be evaluated and clarify. Furthermore, this research hopes to find possible
solutions to stop cyberbullying and what IBD students should do without suffering.
2. Rationale
This investigation inspected the working of observation and school savagery
reasons to comprehend their social ability in peer interpersonal organizations. Initially,
this exploration focused on the current realities of cyberbullying in IBD, and in
Vietnam, it likewise talk more about how it had monstrous influenced understudies of
this school. From that point forward, the undertaking keeps on being supplemented by
looking, auditing and investigating information gathered from different examinations
to bring out broad decisions about school viciousness's current circumstances to
discover answers for fathoming the terrible impacts understudies. Besides, this

venture was meant to find out the best approach to help understudies who have
experienced internet tormenting and enable individuals to study cyberbullying to
forestall it to occur. Moreover, the primary concern of this paper is the viewpoint of
IBD understudies about internet tormenting.
3. Aim of the study

4

As the facts of cyberbullying in society nowadays, cyberbullying must be
prevented as soon as possible. This research aims to evaluate students' perspectives
and how they acknowledge the act of bullying online. Furthermore, this research also
wants to find out the solutions to help students who had to suffer from this problem
and prevent the affection it left. Moreover, as cyberbullying needs to be stopped, this
paper will list some possible solutions that may help people avoid it. Finally, this
study wants to help society have critical thinking about cyberbullying, which may
help prevent it and understand more about this issue.
4. Methodology
The data using in the research will be collected from the survey of this paper.
The survey will be made on Google form and delivered to IBD students to collect the
data. Although individual students' arbitrary choice will be chosen to guarantee total
anonymity and shield understudies from any negative results, an irregular
determination of classes instead of individual understudies will be utilized. In total, I
asked 55 students in Intake 16 Spring of IBD, NEU to complete the survey and collect
data for the research purpose.
5. Research questions
In particular, the purpose of the research is to find the answer to these questions:

What is the current status of cyberbullying?

Which factors can cause cyberbullying?

How do IBD students act when they witness cyberbullying cases?

What does cyberbullying affect IBD students?

How do IBD students do to prevent cyberbullying?

LITERATURE REVIEW
Nowadays, mistreating has gotten logically run of the mill, especially among
youngsters. Those exercises had brought a lot of wretchedness and negative results to
people's prosperity. Various adolescents have executed themselves since they can't
oversee pressure anymore. These states raised an alert to society to take more warning
of their children's lives on social media.
1. The definition of cyberbullying
The Internet is a characterizing component of present-day schooling. Indeed, training
has gotten more available and boundless than any other time on account of the

Internet. From utilizing computerized reading material to getting a degree on the web,
more study hall capacities and understudy encounters are moving into the Internet —
including, sadly, cyberbullying.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, cyberbullying is a way to harass
people using mean-spirited messages to hurt someone's mental. These messages are
often done anonymously. However, nowadays, with the growing of the Internet,
cyberbullying not only happen by using notifications. It also has some definitions to
describe bullying online. "Willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of
computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices" (Hinduja & Patchin, 2012).
Cyberbullying is also defined as an intentional way to harm a person, and very
difficult to stop this bullying from continuing. (Pearce et al., 2011). All this definition
has pointed out cyberbullying is a serious problem that needs to be prevented as soon
as possible.
In recent years, the number of cyberbullying cases has increased significantly; both
adults and teenagers are victims of this issue. (Jacobs T. Judge, 2017). According to
the Cyberbullying Research Center, in 2016, approximately 34% of students had been
victims of bullying online at sometimes in their whole lives. VnEpress (2019) reports
that a fifth of young Vietnamese are cyberbullied in Vietnam but do not know how to
find professional help. These statements reflect the truth about the sadness of social
media in Vietnam, particularly and around the world in general.
2. The cause leads to cyberbullying

6

Bullying is often said to be the consequence of jealousy or an unhappy childhood. On
the other hand, cyberbullying may happen because of boredom or mundane feelings.
As reported by the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 40% of students who
cyberbully said they often do not feel guilty or shameful after the bullying. According
to Mitchell A. Donnie (n.d), several reasons may cause cyberbullying: a lack of

empathy, self-loathing, or just because the bullies feel the victims deserve it. Another
research by Sherri Gordon (2020) points out that cyberbullies also seek revenge
instead of a healthier way. "Sometimes they just want to fit in with friends." (Gordon,
2020). Many reasons can cause cyberbullying, but the consequence it left is to harm
other people.
Although cyberbullying happens a lot around us, it does not make it easy to recognize
the victims. According to Emily Hartung (2018), people who often nervous or scared
of going outside and frustrated after going online are being cyberbullied. She also said
that people who are unwilling to discuss or share information about their online
accounts are also victims of cyberbullying. Another research of ADL.com (n.d) has
examined different ideas. They said that victims also have an unexplained decline in
grades, express some signs of depression or sadness, or just want to stay home.
3. The effects of cyberbullying on students
Discuss about the affection of cyberbullying on society, especially students, Eric C.
Alcera (2020) said that there are several of consequences that can impact on people
lives. He listed some significant ones are: Uses of drug or alcohol, sleeping trouble,
intend to harm themselves or suicidal. Another article talked about this topic of Sherri
Gordon on Verywellfamily.com (2020) complemented the list with such consequences
as physical sick, have low self-esteem or decreased academic achievement. All of
these impacts can be improved if cyberbullying cannot bother them. “Parents should
keep an eye out for signs like these so that they can talk to their child about the
situation and take steps to help improve things,” (Alcera E., 2020)
4. The prevention of cyberbullying
According to Shaikh H. (2017), cyberbullying can be eliminated with some proper
method. However, it is often neglected. Shaikh said people, especially parents, need to
be aware of their children. Society should be alerted that social media is always a
7

dangerous place to share private pictures or videos. Another research by Lombardo C.

(2016) said that it is essential to be careful about what you post online. "Any picture
that is uploaded to the internet should be appropriate and respectful of yourself and
others" (Lombardo, 2016). He also advised that people should not meet a person
online they've met as the statistics of issues that people have encountered by using a
dating site is very similar to overall the number of cyberbullying.
Furthermore, to prevent cyberbullying, some people also use a solution called cyber
solutions. It allows people to put an end to the persecution using technology. (Lynch
M., 2019)
In short, this research will mainly focus on the perspective of IBD students about
bullying online. As the study only provides information about cyberbullying in
university, it does not have an overall view of all ages' bullying. Some researchers
should expand some reports about this topic for society to understand more about it in
the upcoming time.

MAIN FINDINGS
Chapter I. The overview of cyberbullying
Bullying is always happening in society in one way or another. Only the
method has changed. Cyberbullying is one type of bullying that occurs online and has
been appeared for so many years. However, in recent years, people start to realize the
problem. Cyberbullying is still a new definition to some people; not everyone knows
clearly about this. In the first chapter, this research will mainly discuss the overview
of cyberbullying.
1. The definition of cyberbullying

Object 3

Figure 1 Classification of participants' gender

In the first section of the chapter, the report mainly discusses about the
definition of cyberbullying. First of all, figure 1 illustrates the number of participants
in this research in IBD as it can be seen that nearly half of the students who do the
survey are male, about 49%. While about the least percentage of participants are
people prefer not to say their gender, about 9%, the rest of the participants, about 42%
of whom are female. This figure shows the significant difference in the number of
gender of participants. Gender is also an indicator that may lead to a cyberbullying
case.
9

Object 5

Figure 2 The classification of the age of participants
In figure 2, you can quickly know the range of ages of participants. The figure
shows us the highest number of people are in the age of more than 23 participated in
this research, 19 people. On the other hand, the lowest age is both people in 18- and
23-year-old, about one person. Along with that, only two people and four people
participated in the research that is at the age of 22- and 21-year-old. However, people
who are at the age of 19 and 20 are very high, about 15 and 13 people participated.
According to a research of Sam Cook (November, 2020), there are a lot of teenagers
who are at the age of 18 – 19, and older reported that they were bullied online, about
54,3%. Age is also a factor that bullies decide to harass.
Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, intimidate, confuse, or target
others. By definition, it occurs in young people. When an adult is involved, it may
meet the description of harassment or cyberattack, a crime that can have legal
consequences and involve criminal prosecution. Cyberbullying usually consists of
online contact forms, an aggressive act, intent, repetition and harm to the target.
(Hutson, 2016). Another article of UNICEF said that cyberbullying is abusing by
using digital technologies. It can happen on social media, through messages and

another kind of digital platform.
Figure 3 shows the data of IBD's students about the way they define
cyberbullying with their knowledge. Overall, it can be seen that students have deeply
10

understood what is cyberbullying. The number of students choosing the answer
cyberbullying happens when students bully other students online and when students
send mean texts or pictures to other one are 50 and nearly 35 students respectively. It
has shown that mainly students have done some research to find out what is
cyberbullying. According to Spiderum.com (2016), cyberbullying is an intentional act
that uses technology to harm or harass other people. It can happen in many ways such
as nasty rumours, pictures or articles that ruin the victim's reputation.

Object 7

Figure 3 The definition of cyberbullying of IBD's students
Cyberbullying is happening all around the world, including Vietnam.
According to WHO’s report, in Vietnam, 51% of internet users, including 48% of
adults and 54% of teenagers, said they had been involved in a "bullying case", 21%
said they had been a victim and 38 % are bystanders or witnesses bullying or
harassment. As you can be seen in the pie chart, The majority of students know about
cyberbullying through news or websites with nearly 70%. On the other hand, only
20% of participants choose that they have seen a case of cyberbullying before. The
percentages of students know about cyberbullying because they are the victim of this
crime or people who has a relationship with the victim are only 9% and 4%,
respectively.

11

Object 9

Figure 4 Ways to approach cyberbullying
In figure 5, I have asked 55 students in IBD about how often cyberbullying
happens in our life, and the pie chart below is the answer. As you can see, Nearly half
of the participants think that cyberbullying sometimes happens in our society and it
also is the highest percentage which is chosen by 53 students with 44%. Moreover, the
rates of cyberbullying happening all the time and the percentages of students think
that cyberbullying happens too often are the same with 24%. And there are only 7%
joiners who choose cyberbully is hard to occur. All students feel that cyberbullying
still exist in life. Cyberbullying is always living in our even we do not see it represent.
(Englander E., 2009). Another research shows that online bullying is the most
frequently act that happen in everyone's lives. (McCoy M., 2010). As the dangerously
of this issue, society needs to find a way to prevent its effect as soon as possible.

Object 11

Figure 5 The frequency of cyberbullying case

12

2. The cause leads to cyberbullying
Bullying online can be motivated in many ways. Figure 6 reveals the reasons
why people begin to bully online. First of all, as can be seen in the bar chart, most of
the participants considered gender and family conflicts are the main reason that led to
cyberbully, about more than 40%. On the other hand, people who lack empathy have
the lowest percentage with about 23%. Moreover, approximately 30% of IBD's
students also think that boredom can cause people to bully online as they can find

excitement in the act of harass other people. Finally, about 37% of participants
consider that racism is also a factor that led to cyberbullying.
Another article points out, sometimes, teenagers who are the victim of a
cyberbullying case often seek for revenge instead of coping with the situation in a
healthier way, "Bully-victims feel justified in their actions because they, too, have
been harassed and tormented" (Gordon S., 2020). According to Secureteen.com (n.d),
the cyberbully may addict when using the social platform to start a bully as it is
challenging to ignore it.

Object 13

Figure 6 The causes lead to cyberbullying
Chapter II. The perspective of IBD's students about cyberbullying
As social media is evolving every day, the cyberbully is becoming a severe
problem that can lead to a lot of adverse effects. That is why cyberbully must be
13

stopped as soon as possible. In this chapter, the paper will evaluate the perspective of
IBD's students about cyberbullying and the act of these adolescents when facing
cyberbully.
1. The act of IBD's students when they witness cyberbullying case
I have asked 55 students what they will do if they witness someone being
bullied online, and the answer is in figure 7. As you can see, over 20 students choose
that the best way is to provide an escape and it also is the largest number of students
choose. The second highest answer with nearly 20 selections is that the victim should
find some help from other people. And about seven students choose to tell others
about the bullying. There are only about 4 participants who decide to ignore the crime
because of fear, and it also is the same number of students choose that victim should
speak to the bully to prevent. Being a victim of a cyberbully is one of the scariest

things that can happen to someone. According to Puclicsafety.com (2018), they agree
that witnesses can encourage the victim to help them feel more at ease talking about
cyberbully. They also mentioned that witnesses should support a way for the victim to
report the cyberbully. Another research said that people who witnessed the case should
speak to the cyberbully in case they know them (Li Q, 2010). This action may make
the witness become a victim, so they should be conscientious.

Object 17

Figure 8 The acts of IBD's student when they become a victim
Figure 8 shows the information about what students will do if they are the
victim of cyberbullying. The highest number of students will reach out to find some
help with 40 students chosen. Another large number of joiners decide to ignore what
the bully does with about 33 students selected. Furthermore, over 25 students choose
to keep all the evidence to impeach the bully, And over 15 students want to start a
campaign to ban the bully out of life. Only a small number of joiners will start doing
what the bully said. "Being cyberbullied is awful. If it happens to you and you're up to
don't know where to turn, don't go through it alone, find someone you trust and talk to
them." (Patchin J., 2019).
2. The effect of cyberbullying on IBD's students

Object 20

Figure 9 The effection of bullying
15

Figure 9 illustrates the influence of cyberbullying on students. The majority of
participants think that cyberbully can create some bad experiences and feelings for the
victim with 42%. A large number of students also believe that the victim may
experience anxiety, fear and low self-esteem with 37%. In contrast, the number of
joiners chooses that victim can affect a change in personality in a wrong way are 16%,
as mentioned by Webwise.ie (n.d), a cyberbully can make victims become angrier and
become distracted, lack of motivation. Finally, there are 5% of students do not think
cyberbullying effect on people life.
Chapter III. The solution to stop cyberbullying
The cyberbullying has left some severe damage to people lives and mental
health. Society needs to stop this problem as soon as possible so that there are no
regret consequences. In this chapter, the research will clarify some feasible solutions
for society in general and IBD's students, in particular, to prevent bullying online.

Object 23

Figure 10 The act of society to stop cyberbullying
Figure 10 distributes the results of the survey question about how society needs
to do to stop cyberbully. It can be easily seen that the majority of students thinks that
organization need to listen to the victim carefully, about 35%. In contrast, there only
1% thinks that society should ignore the problem as this solution may be inefficient.
In the meantime, IBD's students also believe that the prevention should include the
16

cooperation with victims and restoration victim's self-respect. As a result,

approximately 25% of respondents believe that.
Moreover, participants also believe that people should respond to victims
thoughtfully so that they can trust and rely on help. Another article about this topic
complemented this list. They said that society, especially parents, should get another
perspective and be open-minded about these opinions. They also discussed the careful
of witnesses' respond. If they respond publicly, the effect may get even worst.
(according to ConnectSafely.org)
Figure 11 shows the answer of 55 students of I16 Spring of IBD about how
they would prevent cyberbullying happen. As a result, about 37% of respondents said
that people should understand the scope of cyberbullying if they want to avoid
cyberbully. Additionally, there are 35% of these students said that the government
should raise awareness of social media users so that they can use it carefully. On the
other hand, there is only 1% of the participant said that people should not do anything
to stop online harassment. This solution may lead to some severe consequences this
paper had mentioned. However, the remaining students suggested that people should
not try to revenge as it may cause another cyberbully case.

CONCLUSION
All in all, this investigation has discovered demonstrations of brutality or
tormenting on the web led in online media both inside and outside school property and
in each age. The involvers and casualties can be everybody, including on the web
maltreatment by each sort of media, just as roundabout and oppressive brutality.
In the wake of doing some assessment with a broad scope of demonstrates that

may prompt such acts, society should improve more exercises to raise a high
admonition to help individuals all the more cautiously when utilizing on the web
stage. As the dangerous circumstance of online provocation, to forestall this issue,
society when all is said in done, and guardians specifically need to give more
consideration to a few shows that may prompt vicious acts.
