What time does Greta have her tennis match?

Mum, are you going to your chess course?
B
Yes, it’s at quarter to three. Why?
A
I’m playing tennis with Martha this afternoon. Could you give me a lift to the court before
your course? I need to be there by twenty past two.

Oh, OK then, but let’s hurry up: it’s already ten to two!

Have you been to the new swimming pool? It’s really cool! I went there on Saturday.
Great! Why don’t we go there together next Tuesday afternoon, Tom?
I’d love to but I have a guitar lesson on that day. If you want, we can go with Katie on
Thursday, if she doesn’t have her dance class?
OK I’ll ask Katie, then.

What did the girl do yesterday?
Did you go to Mandy’s party yesterday?
I wanted to, but I had a French test this morning so I had to study all afternoon. What did
you do yesterday?
I went to a restaurant with my family. We wanted to celebrate my grandma’s birthday.
Great! How old is she?
70!
A
How’s the boy going home from the station tomorrow?
I don’t know how to get home from the station tomorrow evening. The buses stop early.
Isn’t your dad going to pick you up?
Unfortunately, he’ll be at work, and my mother isn’t in town.
Don’t worry. I’ll ask my brother: he’s having dinner with my aunt tomorrow. She lives near
the station. I’m sure he can meet you there and drive you home.
Thanks, Emma.

You will hear a teacher telling her students about a museum they are going to visit.
Good Morning, I’m going to tell you what you need to know for next Friday’s trip to the Egyptian
Museum. First of all, remember that students pay less than adults, so instead of the usual 8 pounds
you will only need to bring 5 pounds fifty; if your parents want to go too, they will have to pay the
full price.
You will go to the museum with the history teacher but he’s ill so you can’t give him the money. The
Maths teacher will collect it tomorrow at the end of her lesson.
The Museum opens at half past nine, but we’ll have to leave school and be at the bus station by
quarter past eight because the journey there is about 45 minutes. We won’t take the train because it
would take longer to get there.
The Museum has a café so you don’t need to bring food or drink. Remember that you can take
photos inside the museum so don’t leave your cameras at home.

It was amazing! I’ve always loved going to the beach or visiting other countries in summer,
but the two weeks I spent in the mountains were absolutely brilliant.
I’d love to go too. Is it far from here?
No, actually it’s quite close, just half an hour by car. There’s a wonderful hotel with tennis
courts and an indoor swimming pool. I’m sure you would love it.
Cool! Did you stay there?
Unfortunately I couldn’t. It was fully booked; there was a nice campsite near the hotel but it
was too cold; anyway, my father’s best friend lives there, so we stayed there all the time.
I’m really glad you had a great time… what was the weather like?
It was mostly sunny and warm. I was afraid it would rain a lot: you now it may be a little
boring when it rains in the mountains. I hope next time we’ll stay longer. Two weeks isn’t
enough!
You mean you’re going there again next year?
Actually, my parents told me they’d like to do something different next summer. They love
visiting foreign towns so we’ll see what to do before June.
That’s the best thing to do. There’s still a lot of time before next summer.

You will hear a boy and a girl talking about a teacher, Ms Thompson. What does she

B
I really like the way she explains things. I mean, we’ve already found out lots of interesting
things about the countries we’re studying this term and not just learning about the capital
cities. She also likes telling us about the history of these countries or what foods you can eat
there.
A
I suppose you’re right. Though I still prefer our Maths teacher’s lessons.
17
You will hear a girl talking about her favourite sport. What sport is it?
I love all winter sports. I tried skiing last winter and I really enjoyed it at first but then it got a bit
boring. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than snowboarding. Of course, you need to be fit and
it’s easier to get hurt. That’s why I always train at the gym for a month before I go to the mountains.

Milly The opera?
Harriet Yes. I love opera! This year we’re including different types of music. Akos is singing hip -hop.
Milly So, everyone is singing or playing an instrument?
Harriet No. If a student doesn’t want to go on stage, they can help with the show.
Milly I remember Olga filmed last year’s show.
Harriet Yes, but now she’s learning the guitar, so she’s doing that this year.
Milly So, no one’s filming the show this year?
Harriet Oh yes. Shane has broken his arm so he’s doing the filming.
Milly And your sister Jenny?
Harriet She wanted to organise the tickets, but our teacher is doing that. So Jenny’s doing the lights.
Milly Oh, OK! And what about Tracy? She loves playing drums, doesn’t she?

You will hear a teacher telling her students about a week at the Arts Centre they take part in.
Right everyone. Just some information on The Arts Centre that is open from July to September. You
will leave at half past nine on the 17th and get there in about half an hour. During the week you will
spend there, you will have several activities to choose from: students can do painting or drawing
from 8 a.m. to midday, while after lunch those who are interested can try dancing or photography.
The courses are available for students aged 11 to 15, but remember your parents have to fill in a
form where they agree to let you do the courses.
During the week at the Arts Centre you will also be able to take part in weekend activities:
Unfortunately we won’t be able to take you to the swimming pool as we did last year but we will go
on a trip to London and visit museums as well. The cost of the week, which includes accommodation
and meals, is 139 pounds, so please remember to bring the money by Thursday.

Hi Adam. Jessie told me you’ve decided to learn how to cook. How is the course you’re
doing?
Well, it was my mother who told me to do it. At first I thought it wouldn’t be so interesting
as I don’t want to be a chef like her. But half an hour after the class started, I realised it was a
great opportunity: you know how I love good food, so making dishes can be great fun.
I’m sure it was great way to spend the day.
It was! And being in a kitchen from morning to evening was a very interesting experience.
After the first half hour when the teacher told us what to use, it took me only three hours to
make a very special meal with very simple foods such as cheese, vegetables and eggs. When
I got back in the evening I was really happy about the results.
Was the kitchen large?
Very large. There were 14 of us, but we had enough space to work.
So are you going to the course on desserts next month?
I’d love to, but I don’t think I’ll have enough time because next month I have a lot of tests.
Anyway I’d like to keep working in the kitchen by myself. I’d like to try to make a meal for my
vegetarian grandmother. She really loves trying new dishes so I’ll see what I can do: I have an
interesting cookbook with a lot of wonderful vegetable dishes!
Sounds great! I hope you’ll invite me too.

Clare, shall we meet at quarter to six like yesterday?

Yes, OK. We can still get to basketball practice before it begins at quarter past seven.

I don’t like black very much. I’ll take the white ones.

Most days I had to study for my Spanish exam on Friday. On Thursday evening, however, my

Yes, it was, but I had a singing class, so we went on Thursday instead.

You will hear a teacher telling some boys and girls about the school’s summer music classes.
Good morning class. I’d like to tell you about the music classes that the school is offering this
summer. If you’re interested in learning to play a musical instrument, you need to book before the
4th July. All the classes will start on the 14th of July and last until the 28th July.
You can choose from several musical instruments such as the drums, the guitar and the violin. Most
lessons are on weekdays but the guitar teacher can only teach students on Saturday.
As the courses are all for beginners, you can borrow an instrument from the school. You can collect
them from Room 30 on the third floor from the first week of July.
The course isn’t very expensive: each of the ten lessons will cost £7, so £70 in total. However, if you
pay for the whole course at once, you get a 10% discount and will only pay 63 pounds.

Richard
How did you like the film?
Well, I don’t usually enjoy watching films about history, I think they’re boring. But
this time I found it quite interesting.
I agree with you. I suppose it was because the actors were really good. I loved them,
especially the girl playing young Queen Elizabeth.
I’m not so sure… actually, what I liked best was the photography.
It was a bit long. I wanted to meet my friends after the movie, but it’s already 6 and I
have to go home now. I’m going to Cork tomorrow morning.
But it was only 2 and a half hours long. A film about the life of a queen can’t be
shorter than that!
Maybe you’re right. At least we’ve learnt something useful. We’re studying the life of
Queen Elizabeth at school.
Yes, it will help us with the history test we’ve got next week.
True. So, what about going to the cinema again next Saturday? There’s a film about
Queen Victoria…
Well, as I told you, I’m not into historical films. Why not watch a horror or a comedy?
Horror films are too scary! Let’s go see something funny.

Hello, everyone. I’m going to tell you about this year’s photo competition: as you know, last year’s
photos were about travel; this year, however, students have to take pictures about nature. You can
choose to take a photo of animals or plants and send it to the school office from July 23rd to the
28th. The competition will be on the last Tuesday of July.
The students who want to take part in the competition must send two photos, but only one will be
chosen. The winners will receive an email message before the competition day. There will be three
prizes: the third prize is a cap; the second prize is a T-shirt and the winner of this year’s competition
will get a backpack.

Hi Jonathan. So, the holidays are over, back to school again…
I know, but I had a great one this year.
Where did you go?
Well, my mother loves Canada and Dad really wanted to visit Brazil, but we finally booked
flights to the USA.
Lucky you! How long did you stay there?
We went in the first week of the holiday, on the 3rd of July and came back on the 30th. We
toured several places like Niagara Falls and New York, but the best was Yellowstone Park.
Wow, what’s that like?
Well, it was really exciting. It’s the oldest national park in the USA and it’s really big. At times
it was a bit scary too. We spent some nights at a campsite in the park. We were worried the
bears might come at night! Anyway, we saw lots of wild birds, foxes and a lot of other wild
animals. We even saw a snake in a river, but it wasn’t a dangerous one.
Did your brother enjoy the holiday?
Yes, he did but he spent too much money on souvenirs. I only got a few. However, I didn’t
take enough photos. That was a mistake!

Welcome to Georgetown Sports Camp. I’d like to give you some information: during your time at the
camp you will find fourteen different sports, five indoor activities and nine outdoor sports. If you
want to do a sport, just write your name on the lists of the sports you would like to do.
Now, clothes. For most sports you can just wear shorts and a T-shirt. As we do both indoor and
outdoor sports, make sure you have a pair of trainers with you, too.
Lunch is served at the snack bar from quarter past twelve and quarter to two. You will find
sandwiches and drinks to buy there, but if you want salad or fruit, you need to go to the little shop
near the bus stop. Don’t eat too much or you won’t be able to run and jump!
For each sport you do, you will get a mark and each mark goes into your final score. If you get over
190 marks in total, you will get a tennis racket. The maximum score is 250 and those who get that
score will win a surfboard.
I hope everything is clear.

Father Do you think the boy will like that? How about going to a museum?
Sandy Actually, I found it a bit boring.

How much is the video game?
Dad, will you buy me this video game?
How much is it? I don’t want to spend more than thirty pounds.
Well, it’s usually thirty-nine pounds but there’s a special offer. It’s twenty-nine pounds
today.
Oh yes, it’s ten pounds cheaper than usual. Lucky you!

Can we do some cooking together?
Yes, OK. Do you want to help with the chicken soup?
No. I want to do something sweet. Can I make some biscuits?
Yes, OK, but we can have them for dinner. I made a cake for lunch.

Lessons are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but on Wednesday you already have the French course
with Mrs Dufour, so your day will definitely be Tuesday.
Now, the price. A single lesson for two students is £25 pounds an hour or £15 for half an hour. I
suggest you start with the one-hour lesson, then once you know the basics you can do half an hour.
You must go to Mr Shelley’s house which is very close to Queen’s Square. The exact address is 105
Main Street. Remember to call him first, his number is 0753 715380. Did you get it right? I’ll say it
again: 0753 715380. The best time to call him is between six and nine.
Is that clear to everyone?

Hey, Jed, how about going to the cinema on Sunday?
OK. What shall we see? How about that new comedy?
Actually, I want to see the horror film.
Oh no, I hate scary films. The sci-fi one sounds good, though.
Good idea. Let’s see that.
Is it on at the cinema near the market?
No, that cinema is shut at the moment. It’s also not on at the cinema opposite the station.
So, let’s go to the cinema in the shopping centre. How are you getting there?
You can take the train, but there are lots of buses from outside my house.
OK. I can walk to your house and get the bus with you. What time shall I meet you?
Let me think. The film starts at 6.15 p.m. It takes about 20 minutes to get there. So come to
my house at twenty to six.
OK. How much money are you taking? Tickets cost five pounds fifty, right?
No, they’re six pounds fifty but I’ll take ten pounds so I can get a drink and a snack too.
Right, see you Sunday, then.

A
That’s on Saturday: it’s your father’s birthday, don’t you remember? We’re having a surprise
dinner party with them.
B
Oh, you’re right. Then we can go. I can’t wait: I love pizza!

You will hear two friends talking. When does the football match start?
Hurry up, Amanda. It’s already quarter past six and the match begins in 45 minutes.
Don’t worry, Sam. Roger and his father are going there by car. I asked him if he can drive us
there, too. So we’ll be there by six forty-five.
Good. So we’ll have time to buy some drinks as well before it starts at seven.

Hi, Sue. Where have you been?
I was in the park with my aunt’s dog. I always work as a dog-sitter on Saturday mornings.
Cool! Shall we go to the cinema after lunch?
OK, but we’ll have to go to the 2.30 show because I’m having dinner at my grandfather’s this
evening.

You will hear a man and a woman talking about buying a TV. What size do they want to
buy?
Cindy, how about this TV on the second shelf? It looks perfect for the kitchen.
I don’t know. It looks as large as the one we have in the living room... it might be too big for
the cupboard near the fridge.
Maybe you’re right. Let’s get a smaller one. We need more space to cook in the kitchen.

You will hear a boy talking to his friend. What is he going to buy to his grandmother?
What shall I get my grandmother for her birthday?
Well, she really loves shoes. Why don’t you buy the pair near the gloves in that shop
window?
I’m not sure about her size…
Then I’m sure she’ll love these: she always wears jewellery, doesn’t she? And she has a
necklace that goes with them, too.

Hi Nick. What are you playing?
It’s a new computer game that my uncle gave me for Christmas. It’s great!
Cool. What did you get from your grandfather? Did he buy you a new mobile phone?
I asked for one, but my mum said it was too expensive, so he bought me a skateboard.
What did your sister get you this year? Another T-shirt?
No, actually she gave me this jacket I’m wearing. What do you think?
Nice! You usually get a book from your aunt, don’t you?
Yes, you’re right. She usually gives me a book, but she gave me some money this year. It was
quite a surprise!
And what about your mum?
Well, she bought me a book. I haven’t read it yet.
I bet your brother got you some music.
Yes, he got me this awesome new CD. In fact, let’s listen to it now!
