Although we can break the sentence down a sequence of words. We will not go from sentence to word in a single step but will recognize unit intermediate inside between sentence and word. One of the most widely used techniques for desplaying sentence structure in this direction is the use of immediate contiuent(IC) analysis. - To make an IC analysis of the sentence “ I have reserved……………...play off game last night”, we carry out the following steps: 1, Identify the two major continuents: “I” and “have reserved six……………….last night”. 2, Divide the next biggest contiuents into: “have reserved” and “six front row seats…………….. night”. 3, Continue dividing into until we can’t go further - Type of sentence: Simple sentence S +V+ O + A “I” is the subject of a sentence and it’s considered as a NP. According to contemporary syntax any phrase may be one or more words long. The key syntax notion of funtion is brought in to focus in order to define the phrase in a way that makes the study of gramar simpler. “ Have reserved” is a verb in this sentence. It presents for the present perfect: Have/Has + PII - “Have” is an auxilary verb, it has no lexical meaning, therefore it must be used with a lexical verb. - “ have reserved” is a finite verb. According to theory, verb in the present or past tense are called finite, the finite form of “ reserve” is “have reserved” or “has reserved”. A finite verb must normally have a subject( which may be hidden) and a tense (a finite can also called a tensed verb). “six front row seats” is a NP Functional formular: Premodifier + Head - “six front row seats” functions as an object of this sentence..

An object is normally a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase. It usually goes after the verb in the active. - “ Front row” is a compound noun but function as an adj in order to modify the noun “seat” “ For the basketball play off game ” is a Preposition phrase.It functions as an adverbial phrase because it modifies the verb “have reserved” - “basketball” is a compound noun but functions as an adj. o Basketball= N + N. - “ play off” is also a compound noun but function as an adj. o Play off = V + particle - Both 2 above compound nouns are used to modify the noun “ Game”. “ Last night” is a NP.However it function as an adverb of time. Last night = A + N.
