Lesson 8: Review unit 8

( Week 2 )

I. Aim: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to review the notes they have 
learnt in unit 8.

II. Language focus:

- Review the form and the uses of the relative clauses( who,which,whose,whom,
that) in order to do exercises.

-Review the adverb clauses of concession.

1.Mệnh đề quan hệ

* GiảI thích thêm thơng tin cho mệnh đề trớc nó.
 - Which: thay cho vật cả chủ ngữ và tân ngữ
 -Who: Thay cho danh từ chỉ ngời………
 -Whom: Thay cho tân ngữ chỉ ngời ở câu hai

-Whose: Thay cho tÝnh từ sở hữu ở câu thứ hai( his,her, their)
- That: Thay cho who,whom which . Thay cho chủ ngữ cả 
ng-êi c¶ vËt …..

* Notes:

1. Khi nào KHƠNG ĐƯỢC dùng THAT :
- Khi phía trước nó có dấu phẩy hoặc giới từ :

This is my book , that I bought 2 years ago. (sai) vì phía trước
có dấu phẩy -.> không được dùng THAT mà phải dùng which
This is the house in that I live .(sai) vì phía trước có giới từ in
-> khơng được dùng THAT mà phải dùng which

2. Khi nào bắt buộc dùng THAT

- Khi danh từ mà nó thay thế gồm 2 danh từ trở lên trong đó
vừa có ngừơi vừa có vật

The men and the horses that ....
That thay thế cho : người và ngựa

3. Khi nào nên dùng THAT

- Khi đầu câu là IT trong dạng nhấn mạnh (Cleft sentences)
It is My father that made the table.

- Khi đứng trước đó là : all, both, each, many, most, neither,
none, part, someone, something, so sánh nhất

There is something that must be done

This the most beautiful girl that I've ever met.
2.Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định:

Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định giới thiệu một mệnh đề tính
ngữ khơng có nhiệm vụ xác định rõ danh từ hoặc đại từ mà nó
hợp với vì danh từ đó tự nó đã xác định rồi.Mệnh đề quan hệ
tính ngữ này chỉ có giá trị thêm ý.

VÝ dơ : My brother Nam wants to speak to you.You saw him
yesterday.

=> My brother Nam ,whomyou saw yesterday ,wants to
speak to you.

My brother Nam ở câu 1 và him ở câu 2 cã quan hƯ víi 
nhau

3.Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định:

Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định giới thiệu một mệnh đề tính ngữ
có nhiệm vụ xác định rõ danh từ hoặc đại từ mà nó hợp với vì
danh từ đó tự nó đã xác định rồi.Mệnh đề quan hệ tính ngữ
này cần thiết vì nếu khơng có nó ngời ta sẽ không thể xác
định rõ danh từ hoặc đại từ đó chỉ ai/cái gì.

VÝ dơ: The man refused to give me his name.He told me this
story.

ở mệnh đề 1 ngời ta cha biết The man là ai cả nên cần mệnh
đề 2 xác định rõ nên mệnh đề 2 đợc gọi là mệnh đề quan h
xỏc nh.

Đợc viết lại nh sau:

The man who told me this story refused to give me his 
name.

2.Mnh quan hệ không xác định:

VÝ dơ : My brother Nam wants to speak to you.You saw him

=> My brother Nam ,whomyou saw yesterday ,wants to

My brother Nam ë c©u 1 và him ở câu 2 có quan hệ với 
nhau

Him là tân ngữ và là ngời nên dùng đại từ quan hệ whom để 
thay thế
