<b>PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE</b>
I. FORM: <b>SUBJECT + VERB (without TO)</b>
- The third person singular doesn’t require S or ES
- BE remains BE for every person
II. USAGE
1. The Present Subjunctive is used to express <i><b>wishes</b></i> or <i><b>prayers</b></i>.
Ex: God save the Queen!
Peace be with you!
Long live the forces of peace!
2. The Present Subjunctive or its equivalent (SHOULD + INFINITIVE) is used in
<i><b>noun clauses</b></i>:
a) after the verbs COMMAND (ra lệnh) DEMAND (đòi hỏi), REQUEST (yêu cầu)
PROPOSE, SUGGEST (đề nghị), INTEND (dự định), RECOMMEND (khuyến
cáo), INSIST (khăng khăng, cứ đòi), URGE (thúc hối)
<b>Ex: The officer ordered that his soldiers cease (should cease) fire.</b>
He demands that he be (should be) allowed to meet his lawyer.
His suggestion was that we travel (should travel) by train.
b) after expressions like IT IS NECCESSARY (điều cần thiết là), IT IS
IMPORTANT(điều quan trọng là), IT IS IMPERATIVE (điều bắt buộc là)...
<b>Ex: It is important that your father follow (should follow) the doctor’s advice.</b>
It is advisable that you be (should be) careful in the lab.
<i><b>Use the correct form of the verb in brackets and then translate the sentence into</b></i>
<i><b>Vietnamese:</b></i>
1. The workers’ demand is that the boss (pay) ... them full wages.
2. The doctor recommended that she (take)... a few days’ rest.
3. Mother insisted that we (spend)... our vacation in the mountain.
4. Heaven (help)... the sailors on a night like this!
5. The teacher ordered that his students (stop)... talking in class.
6. It is imperative that you (obey)... the school regulations.
7. She requested that she (be)... given time to carry on her research.
8. Is it neccesary that he (go)... with us?
9. May she never (meet)... sorrow in her life!
