Vietnam's population, which is growing at a rate of about 2.1 per cent annually, stands at over 76 million. The
country has an overall population density of 225 people per square kilometer, although in some areas that
figure stands at over 1,000 while in isolated areas the numbers are significantly less.
Ten per cent of the total population is made up ethnic minority groups. The vast majority of these people live in
mountainous regions. In the early 1990s, the number of households living below the poverty line in these
highland areas was much higher than the national average.
The reasons for the scale of this Poverty are varied - lack of education, high birth rates, and poor
communication and transportation. Droughts, storms and floods cause even greater hardship for these isolated
communities.
