V.READING : ( UNIT 2 )

1.Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions:

Clothes can tell a lot about person. Some people like very colorful clothes because they want everyone to look at
them and they want to be the center of things. Other people like to wear nice clothes, but their clothes are not colorful and
fancy. They do not like people to look at them. Clothes today are very different from the clothes of the 1800s. One
difference is the way they look. For example, in the 1800s all women wore dresses. The dresses all had long skirts.
Sometimes they wear short skirts. Sometimes they wear pants. Another difference between 1800s and today is the cloth.
They were made from cotton, wool, silk or linen. But today, there are many kinds of man made cloth. A lot of clothes are
now made from nylon, rayon, or polyester.

Questions:

6. Why do some people like very colorful clothes?
7. What kinds of clothes do the other people like to wear?
8. Were the clothes of the 1800s as the same as clothes today?
9. What do sometimes women wear today?

10.What were clothes made from 1800s?

2.Read the passage carefully then decide whether the statements are True or False:

Choosing clothes can be difficult. Some people want to be fashionable, but they don’t want to look exactly like

everybody else. Not all clothes are suitable for work or school, perhaps they’re not formal enough or simply not
comfortable. It is easy to buy the wrong size, and find that your trousers are too tight, especially if you’re a bit over weight.
Very loose clothes make you feel slim. If you buy light cotton clothes then they may not be warm enough for winter. If your
shoes waterproof and if you aren’t dressed for the cold, you might look good, but feel terrible !

1) ……… Choosing clothes can’t be easy.

2) ………All clothes are suitable for work or school.

The weekend picnic I enjoyed most was just a few weeks ago . My class decided to pay a visit to the Botanical
Garden . It was a glorious Sunday . We assembled at the school gate punctually and traveled to the Botanical Garden by bus
. It was a long way to our destination and we sang merrily all the way . The Botanical Garden is a beautiful place . We made
a short tour round the garden and took some pictures of the whole class . Then we played a lot of games on a spacious piece
of grassland . One of the boys brought along his guitar and we sang our favorite songs . We laughed , talked and danced ,
too . After a delicious meal with various kinds of food that we brought , we all took a rest . Some of us slept very soundly
because it was so peaceful and quiet there . In the afternoon , we went on playing some more games . Then we packed up
the left-overs and started home at four. We all felt very happy .

I live in a small village called Henfield. There are about 500 people here. The village is quiet and life here is slow
and easy. You never have to queue in shops or banks. People never throw their rubbish in the streets, so the village is always
clean. The air is also very clean because there is not much heavy traffic. It’s much more friendly here than in a city.
Everyone knows everyone and if someone has a problem, there are always people who can help. However, there are some
things I don’t like about Henfield. One thing is that there’s not much to do in the evening. We haven’t got any cinemas or
theaters. Another problem is that people always talk about each other and everyone knows what everyone is doing. But I
still prefer village life to life in a big city.

2……….. The air is unpolluted because there is no traffic here .
3………Villagers are friendly and helpful .

4 ……… The writers wishes to live in a big city .

gift of all for an American Mom is a day of leisure. The majority of American mothers have outside jobs as well as

A. Read the passage carefully, then decide whether the following statement are true or false :

Scientists have known a lot about the earth. They understand how mountains are made and what a volcano is. The
following example is about volcanic eruptions. Mt. Vesuvius in Italy and Mt. St. Helens in the USA are both famous
mountains. They are both volcanoes. A volcano is a mountain that is open at the top. Smoke and hot air come out of the
hole. Sometimes very hot rock also comes out of the mountain. That can make trouble for people nearby. This is what
happened with Mt. Vesuvius and Mt. Helens. Hot rock poured out of Mt. Vesuvius and covered the town of Pompeii in 79
A.D. Every one in the town was killed. The Mt. Helens volcano didn’t kill many people.

There were no cities closes to the mountain. But the hot rock killed a large of the forest. And a lot of dirt fell on cities
many miles away. Today there are still many questions for scientists who study the earth. They do not know when a volcano
will send hot rock into the air. They still are not sure about the inside of the earth.

C. Read the passage, then choose the correct answer for each question:

The Earth has volcanoes because it is hot inside. In some places it is hot enough to run solid rock. Geologists call the
liquid rock magma. The magma rises towards the surface because it is less dense than the surrounding rock (like a hot air
balloon rising through the cooler air ). If the magma reaches the surface it is called lava and lava builds up to make a
volcano.

Volcanoes grow by intrusion and extrusion. An intrusion is magma that moves up into a volcano and then it stops.
This way the volcano grows on the inside. An extrusion is an eruption. It can add layers of lava or ash. This way the volcano
grows on the outside.
