Formal education in the United States id divided into various stages . Early childhood education is the
first rung of the education ladder and is designed for children 5 years of age and younger . Its chief aim is to
develop the habits , attitudes , and skills that provide readiness for school . The programs are of two main types
: nursery schools , also called preschool and kindergartens . Then children attend elementary school .


Since the 1960’s , there has been an increased emphasis on the intermediate grades . These junior high
school programs are designed to help students make the transition from elementary school to the more
demanding structures of secondary schools . Secondary education in the United Stated is the responsibility of
senior high schools . It is designed to help students become responsible members of the community and to
prepare them for a job or for advanced studied after graduation . High school graduates receive a diploma to
show that they have completed their secondary education . Many communities have four-year high schools
with grades 9 through 12 .


Higher education is education beyond high school . More than half of al high school graduates in the
United Sates ahs several thousand institution of higher learning . Over half are privately owned while many of
the public institutions of higher learning are large state universities . School attendance is compulsory in the
