When I was younger, I hated being the eldest child and the only girl in my family. But now I am older, I realize that
being 'Big Sister' actually has its advantages. First of all, I get special treatment from my parents and brothers. I get my own
room, and brothers have to do all the heavy work around the house. Another benefit is that, being the eldest, I have learned to
be responsible and dependable. For example, my parents often leave my brothers in my care when they go out. I also try my
best in whatever I do in order to be a good example for my brothers. The experience I've had in taking care of my brothers has
prepared me for my own family in the future. So, even though I didn't choose to be the eldest child and the only girl in my
family, I have succeeded in making this situation work to my best advantage.

<b>SIBLINGS</b>

When, we are children, our sibling - that is, our brothers and sisters - are our first friends and first enemies. At the end
of life, they are often our oldest friends and oldest enemies. The effect of sibling relationships in childhood can last a lifetime.
Many experts say that the relationship among brothers and sisters explains a great deal about family life, especially today when
brothers and sisters often spend more time with one another than with their parents. Studies have shown that sibling
relationships between sister-sister pairs and brother-brother pairs are different. Sister pairs are the closest. Brothers are the
most competitive. Sisters are usually more supportive of each other. They are more talkative, frank, and better at expressing
themselves and sharing their feelings. On the other hand, brothers are usually more competitive with each other. Experts agree
that tfe relationship among siblings is influenced by many factors. For example, studies have shown that both brothers and
sisters become more competitive and aggressive when their parents treat them even a little bit differently from one another. But
parental treatment is not the only factor. Genetics, gender, life events, people, and experiences outside the family all shape the
lives of siblings. Recently, one researcher demonstrated another factor in sibling relationships. It was discovered that children
dislike watching their siblings fight. In fact, they respond to arguments by taking sides -supporting one sibling and punishing

The Hopi are part of the Pueblo Indian culture. Today they live mostly in northeastern Arizona, at the edge of The
Painted Desert. Something that sets the Hopi off from other cultures is that it is in some senses a maternal rather than a paternal
culture.

The Hopi are divided into clans, or families, along maternal lines, and, as a result, a child becomes a member of the
mother's clan rather than the father's. In addition, ownership of property, such as land and houses, passes from mother to
daughter instead of from father to son, as it does in other Native American cultures. However, women do not have all the
power in this culture. Societal authority still rests in the hands of men, but that authority does pass to men from their mothers.

<b>VII. Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.</b>

Sometimes you know things about people the first time you see them, for example, that you want to be friends with
them or that you don't trust them. But perhaps this kind of intuition isn't as hard to explain as it may seem. For instance, people
give out body language signals all the time. The way you hold your body, head and arms tells people about your mood. If you
hold your arm tightly at your sides, or fold them across your chest, people will generally feel that you are being defensive.
Holding your head to one side shows interest in the other, while an essay, open posture indicates that you are self-confident.
All this affects the way you feel about someone. Also, a stranger may remind you of a meeting with someone. This may be
because of something as simple as the fact that he or she is physically similar to someone who treated you well or badly. Your
feelings about a stranger could be influenced by a smell in the air that brings to mind a place where you were happy as a child.
Since even a single word can bring back a memory such as that, you may never realize it is happening.

At most American colleges and universities, facilities for learning and recreation are available for students. Students
can often use typewriters, tape recorders, video machines, and computers at libraries and learning «centers. They can buy

Education was of primary importance to the English colonists and was conducted at home as well as in established
schools. Regardless of geographic location or finances, most Americans learned to read and computer numbers. For many, the
Bible and other religious tracts were their only books; however, the excellent language contained in such works usually made
them good primers. Mam families owned one or more of Shakespeare's works, a copy of John Banyan's classic <i>'A Pilgrim's</i>
<i>Progress’</i>, and sometimes collections of English literary essays, poems, or historical speeches.

In 1647 the Massachusetts School Law required every town of at least 50 households to maintain a grammar school.
The law was the first to mandate public education in America, in the middle colonies at the time, schools were^ often
dependent on religious societies, such as the Quakers and other private organizations. In the South, families employed private
tutors or relied on the clergy to conduct education. At the outset, most elementary schools were for boys, but schools for girls
were established in the eighteenth century in most j cities and large towns. In spite of the informal atmosphere of most
American schools, the literary rate in the colonies of mid-eighteenth-century America was equal to or higher than in most
European countries.

Before the American Revolution, nine colleges had been founded, including Harvard, William and Mary, Yale, the College of
New Jersey (now Princeton), Brown, Rutgers, Dartmouth, and Kings College (later Columbia University). By1720 the natural
sciences and modern languages were being taught, as well: as courses in practical subjects such as mechanics and agriculture.
At the end of the eighteenth century, medical schools were established at the College of Philadelphia and at King's College.

Colin Peters, who is studying engineering, disagrees. "I don't spend anything on clothes," he said, /'unless you count
climbing boots. I'm very keen on climbing, and you do need special equipment, some of which is very expensive. Luckily, my
parents gave me money for my birthday in November. Not much of my money goes on transport, because 1 have a bicycle."
Diana Bell is a first year fashion student. "I make all my own clothes. This should save me money, but in fact, the materials are
very expensive. I don't know how I would manage if I didn't sell some of the dresses and hats I make to the other students.
Everything is expensive," she said. "That includes the rent, food, transport and heating for the flat in winter." Jack is a science
student in his final year. "What do I spend my money on?" Well, not on clothes, and not a lot on going out in the evening. My
rent is expensive, and I suppose I spend quite a lot on books.

<b>HOW TO PREPARE FOR JOB INTERVIEWS</b>

You've been invited for interview find now you want to make sure you do everything within your power to get the job.
So what do you need to do to prepare yourself for the big day?

Firstly, you should find out as much as you possibly can about the position, the company, the industry and even the

interview. You should go to your prospective employer's website on the Internet, where the company presents itself as it wants
to be seen; relevant trade journals will then tell you how it is viewed by others. You should perhaps also speak to people who
work or have worked for the company, if at all possible.

All this information will give you a great deal to talk about during the interview and so help create the right
impression. The more you know, the greater your competitive edge over other candidates.

To help increase confidence, many people practise rhe interview in frant of a mirror. However, you should instead try it out
with a real person: it's far more realistic and it gives you the chance to ask him or her for some feedback on your performance
In particular, you should practise answers to common questions you can expect to be asked. These include:

• What do you consider to be your major strengths and weaknesses?
• Why do you want to work for this company?

• Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

An interview is also your chance to decide whether you want to work for the company, so be prepared to ask three or
four relevant questions yourself. You shouldn't ever underestimate the effect of your appearance on the interviewer: make sure
you wear a suit to the interview, even if the normal working environment of the company allows for more informal dress.
Punctuality is another crucial factor with regards to first impressions, and for this reason you should always arrive at
the interview site at least 15 minutes before your scheduled meeting. All that's left now is the interview itself. See over for
information and advice on successful interview strategies.

Many countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an unfavourable trade (36)...with
other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country's imports exceeds (37)... of that country's exports.
For example, if a country buys 10 billion dollars in products from other countries, yet sells 10 billion dollars of its own
(38) ...overseas, its trade is 20 billion dollars. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they
(39)...natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import (40) ...materials or
manufactured goods. On effect of trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country in the (41) ... of an under-developed
nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, (42)...failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to the creation of an
industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is (43)...for
alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S industries, cost more to produce than those (44)...in places

The second half of the twentieth century saw more changes in technology than in previous two hundred years.
Penicillin has already been discovered and used to treat infections; there have been many remarkable advances in medicine that
have helped to increase our average life expectancy way beyond that of our ancestors. Incredible innovations such as television
have changed the way we spend our leisure hours. Perhaps the most important breakthrough, however, has been the microchip.
Nobody could have imagined, when it was first invented, that within a matter of years, this tiny piece of silicon and circuitry
would be found in almost every household object from the kettle to the video recorder. And nobody could have predicted the
sudden proliferation of computers that would completely change our lives, allowing us to access information from the other
side of the world via the Internet or send messages around the world by e-mail at the touch of a button. Meanwhile, research
into other aspects of information technology is making it easier and cheaper for us to "talk to friends and relations around the
world.

<b>II. Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.</b>

Western people rely on technical and mechanical solutions in everything thdj do. Refrigerators preserve their food,
washing machines clean their underwear and computers are supposed to solve all their problems. When they are ill, they rely
on the surgeon's knife. If their hearts are running down, then they must be repaired; if they cannot be repaired, they should be
replaced, just as an old car sometimes gets a new engine. But up to now we have had a shortage of donors to give their hearts:
to keep one person alive, another donor had to die. Nowadays there is more and more talk about using monkeys. Every
monkey has a near-human heart, and humans have always been over careful in respecting the lives and well-being of other
animals. This includes the life and well-being of other humans. Therefore, in the early years of the 21st century I was told
-the mass killings of monkeys may occur. We'll need to use -their hearts for human consumption.

Monkeys, on the whole, are happier creatures than their near relatives, <i>Homo Sapiens</i>, or man. They know fear, of
course, and they face real dangers, but they are also more intelligent than us. They create no unnecessary dangers for
themselves; they run no businesses, chase no money, are unimpressed by gold - that utterly useless metal, and they do not care
at all about hell or evil spirits. I have a vague feeling that it is not monkeys' hearts that we ought to implant in ourselves, but
monkeys' brains.

<b>PLANET EARTH </b>

The planet Earth is 4,600 million years old. It is difficult for us to think about such an enormous length of time because
it has little meaning for us. We can. however, simplify the idea to make it more understandable. We can compare the planet
Earth to a person of forty-sfx years of age.

Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person's life. Very little information exists about the middle period
either. It was only at the age of forty-two that the Earth began to flower.

Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago. when the planet was forty-five. Mammals only arrived
eight months ago. in the middle of last week, man-like apes became ape-like men and began to communicate with each other.
Last weekend, the Ice Age covered the Earth.

During that short time, modern man has made a rubbish tip of the Earth. In one minute, he has increased his numbers
to terrible proportions, and has caused the death of hundreds of species of animals. He has robbed and destroyed the planet in
search for fuels. Now he stands like a violent, spoilt child, delighted at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of the final
mass destruction and of killing all the life which exists in the solar system.

The deserts of the world are not all covered with sand. Many of them have surfaces of rock or clay or small stones.
They are not flat, either; they often have high hills and deep valleys. There is some plant life in many parts of the desert. There
is little rain in the desert, but it does fall often enough for most plants. The deserts of the world are not uninhabited. People also
live outside oases, but these people are not farmers. They have camels, goats, donkeys, sheep, etc. These animals can live on
the desert plants and do not need much water. The people of the desert have to move constantly from place to place, they must
always look for grass or desert plants for their animals. They usually live in tents. When there is no more food for their
animals, they fold up their tents, put them on their camels and donkeys., and move to another place. In good years, when there

is not enough food for their animals, they trade their skins and their goats and camel hairs with the people of oases for wheat
and fruit. But in bad years, when there is not enough food for their anirnals, the people of the desert would attack the oases'
people. But they are also hospitable. No man in the desert would ever refuse to give a stranger food and water.

<b>II. Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.</b>
<b>THE EFFECTS OF DESERT WEATHER</b>

A desert is a type of landscape that receives little precipitation. Deserts are normally defined as areas that receive
annual precipitation of less than 250mm. But some places such as Tucson, Arizona receive more but are still called deserts.
That is because they have a much higher rate of evaporation. Many environmentalists argue that desert regions are increasing.
This process is called desertification. It happens when useful soil is blown away by wind. Then the temperature rises, and an

area that was once fertile becomes desert. They say that this is due to global warming. It is also due to overdevelopment. Both
of these problems are major threats to humanity.

True deserts have very sparse vegetation. These deserts exist in the most arid regions of Earth. In these places, rainfall
is rare and infrequent. Deserts have a reputation for supporting little life. But this is not true. Deserts have many animals that
hide during daylight. About one-fifth of the Earth is covered in desert.

Desert landscapes are often composed of sand and rocky surfaces. Sand dunes and stony surfaces called <i>regs</i> are often
found in deserts. Cold deserts have similar features but receive snow instead of rain. Antarctica is the largest cold desert. The
largest hot desert is the Sahara.

Most deserts have an extreme temperature range. The temperature is very low at night. This is because the air is so dry
that it holds little heat. The desert cools as soon as the sun sets. Cloudless skies also increase the release of heat at night. Sand
covers only about 20% of Earth's deserts. There are six forms of deserts. One of the forms is a mountain or a basin desert.
Hamada deserts are comprised of plateau iandforms. Regs consist of rock pavements. Ergs are formed by sand seas.
Intermontane basins occur at high elevations. Finally, badlands are arid regions comprised of clay-rich-soil.

Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived during a period of earth's history called the Mesozoic Era, which is also known as
the Age of Reptiles. The first dinosaurs appeared more than 200 million years ago. For many millions of years, they dominated

the land with their huge size and strength. Then about 65 million years ago, they died out rather suddenly, never to re-emerge.
The word "dinosaurs" comes from two Greek words meaning "terrible lizard". Dinosaurs were not lizards, but their appearance
could be truly terrifying. The', biggest ones weighed more than ten times as much as mature elephant and nearly equaled the'
size of most modern-day whales. The famous kinds of dinosaurs, including the brontosaur and tyrannosaurus rex, reached 80
to 90 feet in length. Not all dinosaurs were giants, however; some were actually not larger than a chicken.

Scientists still do not know what caused dinosaurs to disappear. One theory involves a change in the earth's climate. It
is believed that temperatiires dropped significantly towards the end of the Cretaceous Period. Too large to hibernate and not
having fur or feathers for protecting, it is possible that the climate became too chilly for dinosaurs. In contrast, other species
having protection, such as the mammals and birds, were able to survive.

<b>II. Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.</b>

Scientists believe they now have scientific evidence to prove that ecosystems work better when there is a greater
variety of species within them. This biodiversity is being lost destroying natural mechanisms that could repair the damage
caused by man.

Findings show that losing plants and animals is not only reducing our quality of life but actually endangering our very
existence. We cut down rich rain-forests and replace them with one species plantations, such as pine and eucalyptus. We
plough up meadows rich in different grasses and herbs and replace them with one grass, for instance rye or wheat.

When a natural ecosystem is simplified the basic processes in the ecosystem are altered arid even damaged. Without
their biodiversity they are not able to serve as the natural cleaners of our planet. No longer are they able to absorb the carbon
dioxide that is being produced in excess. The result is global warming, caused by the increase in the "greenhouse effect", and
ultimately, or even sooner, there will be a change in the wprld's climate.

The excitement of snorkelling in a clear tropical sea is hard to explain to someone who hasn't done it. If you expect to
have the opportunity of trying it when on holiday, it is well worth bringing a snorkel if you can get hold of one. Experts now
recommend a separate breathing tube.

Many swimmers take a deep breath before diving with a snorkel. This is a mistake, because it makes the body so light
that you dive with difficulty. It is best to take a couple breaths and then a normal relaxed breath in order to breathe in enough
for dive. Don't take repeated deep breaths before diving because this can lead to shortage of oxygen, which causes
unconsciousness without warning.

The backs of many snorkellers get badly burnt, for the snorkellers are so involved in the world below they forget about
the dangers of sunburn. The sea does not protect your back from the rays of the sun, and it is best to

wear a T-shirt. Snorkellers should also consider wearing shoes (or slippers), which may protect their feet from cuts from sharp
rocks which can easily become infected.

the water slowly, where a boat picks you up. The first bungee jump took place in Queenstown, in New Zealand, on 12
November 1988. Since then, almost half a million people have tried it and Queenstown has become famous for it. More than
90% of the people are on vacation there. Many of the tourists have come just to do the bungee jump. It has become such a

popular event that you can now bungee jump in many countries around the world.

The reason for its popularity is that it is so very exciting. It isn't very often that people get the chance to jump off a
bridge and survive! People pay US$85 for the experience. Another reason is that it is quite safe if the correct rope is used and
checked regularly.

However, there have been accidents (though not in New Zealand) when the rope broke. There's not much chance of
surviving the fall if this happens, and some deaths have been reported.

Bungee jumping first started a long time ago, in the Polynesian islands in the Pacific Ocean. The young boys there had
to jump from a tall tower with a rope made from plants tied around their ankles. They did this to show that they were brave
enough to become men.

then down to the sides pushing each arm backwards at the same time.

<b> ii. Stand with your feet apart and hands on hips. Tip your head back and look straight up to the ceiling. Roll your head round</b>
slowly to face the right, then the floor, then the left, and finally up at the ceiling again.

Repeat in the other direction.

iii. Standing with your feet apart and hands on your sides, lean first to the right and then to the left, sliding the hand down the
side of the leg.
