V. READING COMPREHENSION (10pts): Read the following passages and choose the
best answer to each question.

Passage 1 (5pts)

An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to
the atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials
adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change.
When the first air population laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air
pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled - a far cry from the
extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and
knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants
has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under
certain conditions.

Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide,
and nitrogen oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these
pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in
biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds
to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature’s output of these
compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities.

However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such
a region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural
purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious

chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater
than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The
actual concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical
value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the
concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has
detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural
level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm.

41. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The economic impact of air pollution.
B. What constitutes an air pollutant.

C. How much harm air pollutants can cause.

D. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere.

Over the last century the world has become increasingly smaller. Not geographically,
of course, but in the sense that media, technology and the opening of borders has enabled the
world’s citizens to view, share and gain access to a much wider range of cultures, societies
and world views. In this melting pot that the world has become, today’s child is privy to
facets of the human experience that his immediate predecessors had no inkling even existed. It
stands to reason that in order to absorb, configure and finally form opinions about this
information-laden planet, children must be supplied with certain tools. Included in this list of
“tools” are: education, social skills, cultural awareness and the acquisition of languages, the
most important of these being the latter. Until recently, a child who had the ability to speak
more than one language would have been considered a very rare entity. This one-language
phenomenon could be attributed to a combination of factors. Firstly, the monolingual
environment in which a child was raised played a strong role, as did the limited, biased
education of the past. With regard to immigrants, the sad fact was that non-native parents
tended to withhold the teaching of the mother tongue so that the child would acquire the
“more prestigious” language of the adopted country.

Nowadays, the situation has undergone an almost complete reversal. In the majority of

North American and European countries, most children are given the opportunity to learn a
second or even a third language. Children acquire these foreign languages through various
and diverse means. In many countries, learning a foreign language is a compulsory subject in
the state school curriculum. Other children rely on language schools or private tuition to
achieve their goal. In other instances, children are born to bilingual parents, who, if they so
desire, may teach the children two languages.

Bringing up one’s child bilingually is not a decision to be taken lightly. Both parents
must consider long and hard the implications involved in raising a child in a two-language
home. This decision is one of those all-important choices which will affect not only the
parents’ lives but also the life of the child. Raising a child bilingually has a two-fold effect.
Firstly, of course, the child learns the two languages of the parents. Secondly, the parents’
decision will influence factors which will have a far-reaching effect on the child’s life. Some
of these factors include: style and place of education; diameter of social circle; employment
potential and preference; and, most importantly, the way in which the child views himself and
his global environment.

One of the more advantageous by-products of being a member of a bilingual family is
the inherent awareness of two different cultures. This bicultural child inherits a wealth of
knowledge brought about by an exposure to: historical backgrounds; traditional songs and
folklore; rituals of marriage; models of social interaction; and therefore, two varying
interpretations of the world. The monolingual child seems to be at a disadvantage in
comparison to the bilingual child, who has a set of languages and an accompanying set of
abstract cultural ideas. Practically speaking, when a child comes from a two-language family,
he must be taught both languages in order to communicate with the extended family members.
When, for example, the grandparents speak a language which differs from that of the child’s
locale, a monolingual child would be deprived of the interaction which occurs between
grandparents and grandchildren. On the other hand, a bilingual child will not only be able to
speak to grandparents, but will also comprehend where these people have ‘come from’. There
will be a shared cultural empathy within the family. Because all family members can

communicate, on both a verbal and cultural level, no one will feel excluded and the child will
develop a sense of rootedness.

(8)

bilingual child, then, vocabulary items and the abstract idea behind them are both dual in
nature and more elastic. Researchers maintain that this elasticity of ideas may allow the child
to think more flexibly and, therefore, more creatively.

of the things nature (91) _______ is water. Water goes from oceans, lakes, and rivers into the
air. Water falls from the air as (92) _______ or snow. Rain and snow eventually find their
way back to the oceans. Nature’s recycling program for water is (93) _______ the water
cycle.

The water cycle has four stages: storage, evaporation, precipitation, and runoff. Water
on Earth gets stored in oceans, lakes, rivers, ice, and even underground. Water goes from
storage into the atmosphere by a (94) _______ called evaporation. When water evaporates, it
changes from a liquid (95) _______ a gas, called water vapor. Water vapor goes up into (96)
_______ atmosphere. Water returns to the Earth as precipitation in rain or snow by changing
into drops of water when the air (97) _______ cold enough. Clouds are collections of water

droplets. Most precipitation (98) _______ into the oceans and goes right back into storage.
Water that falls on land always flows from (99) _______ places to lower ones. This flow is
called runoff. Water from land flows into streams. Streams join (100) _______ to make rivers
and eventually the water flows into storage in the oceans. Then the water cycle starts all over
again.

III. ERROR CORRECTION (10pts): The passage below contains 10 mistakes. Identify
the mistakes and correct them. (0) has been done as an example.

Research has found that children (0) took on a supermarket trip make a
purchase request every two minutes. More than $200 million a year is now
spent on advertising directly to children, most of them on television. That
figure is likely to increase. For children, the reasons behind their parents’
decisions about that they can and cannot afford are often unclear and
arguments about how bad sugar is for your teeth are inconvincing when
compared with the attractively and emotionally persuasive advertising
campaigns.

According to Susan Dib of the National Food Alliance, “Most parents

concerned about what they give their children to eat and have ideas about what
food is healthy – although those ideas are not always accurate. Obviously,

such a dialogue among parents and children is a good thing, because if the
only information children are getting about productivity is from TV
advertising, they are getting a very one-side view. Parents resent the fact that
they are competing with the advertising industry and are forced into the
position of repeated disappointing their children.” The Independent Television
Commission, which regulates TV advertising, prohibits advertisers of telling
children to ask their parents to buy products.
