One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water.

Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain, industrial pollution and
garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have
become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia, for example, is one of the largest in the world. It
contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere
else in the world. However, these species are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial
wastes which pour into the lake every day. Even where laws exist, the government do not have enough
power to enforce the laws. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea
occupies 1% of the world's water surface. But it is now the dumping ground for about 50% of all
marine pollution. Many countries regularly discharge industrial wastes a few miles offshore.

Water is supposed to be free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean
water in the world was limitless. Today many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and
sewage. Clean water is now becoming rare, and people are at last beginning to be aware of this
problem. It's time countries in the world did something before it is too late.

About 4,000 years ago a young boy called Elmesu wished his father good health and a long life
by writing a Father’s Day message on a card made of clay. No one knows what happened to
Elmesu or his father, but the tradition of having a special day honoring fathers has continued
through the years in countries across the world.

Father’s Day is celebrated on 3rd Sunday in June in many parts of the world. The idea for creating

a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman named Sonora
Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day teaching
given in a church in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart after her
mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that
did everything for her and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving
man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in

Spokane, Washington on the 19th June, 1910.

Everyday in radio, on TV, and in the newspapers, we hear, see or read about many
problems in the world, for example, pollution problems.

Air pollution is the first kind. It mostly comes from fumes released from motorbikes,
