SPEAKING PRACTICE

Unit Two: Weather

Suggested Questions and Answers

1. What is the weather like today – in Cao Lanh City?

- It’s sunny, hot and humid. It is hot in the day and cold at night. Well, the cold here is affected by the
cold from the North. The North of Vietnam is in the winter now.

+ You have to go to school and be punctual, rain or shine? Is it right?
You’re quite right! Absolutely.

Note: Rain or shine = used for saying that something always happens or someone always does something
despite bad weather or difficult conditions: She runs six miles every morning, rain or shine.

- Well, it is sunny, hot and humid.
Look! It is raining (very hard).

Look! It is drizzling (drizzle /`drizl / = to rain in a very light way)
It is cloudy.

It is windy.

It’s hot & windless today.

It’s cold and windy today. Take an sweater, a scarf or a hat in case of bad weather.
It’s cloudy and beautifully cool.

It’s foggy in the early morning.

2. How many seasons are there in a year – what would you say in English?
There are four seasons: spring, summer, fall (autumn), and winter.

You know, people say there are only two seasons in the south of Vietnam: the dry and the rainy
season.

Dong Thap Province is in the Mekong River Delta , south Vietnam so it has two seasons as well: the
dry and the rainy season.

Note: A period of the year when a particular type of weather is expected in some regions of the world:

the dry/rainy season: It should be well into the dry season when we arrive.
3. What season is it now?

(13)

- We are in the rainy season. It often rains in the afternoon and in the evening.

In this season, it often has storms, thunder, lightning, gusts, tornados, and so on. They are so
dangerous.

+ So we should take an umbrella or a raincoat in case it rains…. Is it right?
- You are quite right.

4. What is your favorite season? Which season do you like more – the rainy season or the dry season?
- I like the dry season more just because I am not wet on the way to school – I’m not wet on the way to

home or I am not wet when going out on weekends. I don’t think I like looking rains in the evening
through windows. There will not be storms, floods, thunder, lightning, gusts, tornados, and so on.

They are so dangerous.

- Actually, we can not say which season is better – the dry season or the rainy season. Both are very
important to our life. Vietnam is a developing country – a tropical country. Almost people’s life
depends on agricultural products. Clearly, Rains are a prerequisite for farmers’ crops.

Trees – plants – fruit gardens will grow better – they will be greener in the rainy season; flowers will
be more colorful; rice fields will be more beautiful.

- It will not be hot . There will not too much dust in the air - going into my eyes – And the sun shines
after rain. Just think of it!

5. How about the flood waters from the upper reaches of the Mekong River in the rainy season?
It is a big problem?

- That’s a big question! I am too young. I don’t know much/well.

Maybe …. living with flood waters is the best way… I don’t think it is a big problem.

- In Months: August, September, October and November, DThap has to face the flood waters from
Cambodia and Thailand - the upper reaches of the Mekong River. Also, the people in this area worry
when the high tide comes in!

In the past, it was a problem. But now - I don’t think it is a big problem. The government and people
here have useful lessons – experiences - I mean they accept to live with floods peacefully. The flood
waters will carry silt and valuable resources of aquatic products to this area…

6. Why do people often talk about weather?

- It is an easy question to answer. You can imagine! Just think of it! It is true that people often talk

about weather. Weather reports provide us with forecasts – pretty exact information on what the
weather will be likely to happen tomorrow – the day after tomorrow or in the next few days. Our
plans will not be affected by bad weather if we know what the weather will be.

(14)

7. What are the main features of the climate in VN? What climate factors would be favorable for your
country’s development?

- In general, the climate in VN is hot, humid and it often rains a lot in the rainy season. Of course, The
rainy season will be favorable for our country’s development because almost people’s life depends on
agricultural crops.

- The climate in the south is little different from one in the north. There are four clear seasons in the
north. There are not four clear seasons in the south, however.

People say there are only 2 seasons in the south, in my place – DT Province : the dry season and the
rainy season.

- The rainy season starts in May and ends in November. The dry season starts in December and ends in
April.

8. Tell me what the difference between “weather” and “climate” is?
+ You can ask: What's the weather like today?

And your friend can answer: The weather is good, today.
