The search of alternative resources of energy has resulted in different directions. Many
communities are burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity.
Experimental work is being done to make synthetic fuels from coal, or coal tars. But to
date, that process has proved expensive. Some experts are trying to revive hydroelectric power
which is derived from streams and rivers. Fifty years ago, hydroelectric power provided one third
of the electricity used in the United States, but today it supplies only four percent. The oceans are
another source of energy. Scientists are studying ways to change the energy of ocean currents,
tides, and waves into electricity.
- synthetic fuels: nhiên liệu tổng hợp.
- hydroelectric power: năng lượng thuỷ điện.

A recent investigation by the scientists at the US Geological Survey shows that strange
animal behavior might help predict future earthquakes.
Investigators found such occurrences in a ten-kilometer radius of the center of a fairly
recent quake. Some birds screeched and flew about wildly; dogs yelped and ran around
uncontrollably.
Scientists believe that animals can perceive these environmental changes as early as
several days before the disaster. In 1976 after observing animal behavior, the Chinese scientists
were able to predict a terrible earthquake. Although hundreds of thousands of people were
killed, the government was able to evacuate millions of other people and thus keep the death toll
Ex: What prediction may be made by observing animal behavior?
a. Environmental changes.
2
c. The number of people who will be killed.
d. The number of people who will be evacuate.
1/ Why can animals perceive these changes when humans can not?
a. Humans don’t know where to look.
b. Animals are more intelligent than humans.
c. Animals can feel the shaking of the earth by running around.
d. Animals have certain instincts that humans don’t possess.
2/ If scientists can predict earthquakes, there will be ………..
a. a lower death rate.
b. fewer people evacuated.
c. fewer environmental changes.
d. a lower animal behavior.
3/ Which of the following statements is not true?
a. The Chinese scientists have successfully predicted an earthquake.
b. By observing animal behavior, scientists can predict earthquake.
c. Some animals may be able to sense an approaching earthquake.
d. All birds and dogs in a ten-kilometer radius of an earthquake.
a. destroy.
b. remove.
c. save.
d. build.
