<b>Question 3</b>: Read the passage below then state whether the following sentences are TRUE or
FALSE :
VALENTINE’S DAY
flowers, offering gifts, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). That is, Valentine's Day
The day is now most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of
"valentines". Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves and the figure
of the winged boy angel. Starting in the 19th century, hand writing notes has largely given way
to the exchange of mass-produced greeting cards. The Greeting Card Association ( Hiệp Hội )
estimates that world-wide approximately one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making
the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year just behind Christmas. The
Association also estimates that women buy approximately 85 percent of all valentines.
In the United States in the second half of the 20th century, exchanging cards has been
extended to include the giving of gifts, usually from the man to the woman. Such gifts typically
(điễn hình ) include roses and chocolate. Starting in the 1980s, the diamond industry began to
promote Valentine's day as occasion for the giving of fine jewelry.
A dinner date on Valentine's Day is often regarded as indicating that a dating couple is involved
in ( dính dáng vào ) a serious relationship.
In the United States the day has come to be associated ( liên hệ với ) as well with a basic
spiritual ( về mặt tinh thần ) greeting of "Happy Valentine's", which may be said by men to
their female friends, but rarely to other male friends.
The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent
each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or
wife, usually to children. When you include the valentine-exchange cards made in school activities
the figure goes up to 1 billion, and teachers become the people receiving the most valentines.
The rise of Internet popularity ( sự ưa chuộng ) at the turn of the 21st century is creating new
traditions. Millions of people use, every year, digital means of creating and sending Valentine's Day
greeting messages such as cards, love coupons or printable greeting cards. About 15 million
e-valentines will have been sent in 2010.
There are some families, however, who choose to find other means of honoring Saint Valentine on
Valentines Day. Many of these traditions involve bonfires, for fire is said to represent passion
In history, there were several saints called Valentine who were probably related to Valentine’s Day.
The perhaps most important Saint Valentine was mentioned in an old book (1493). The book had a
portrait in it. With the portrait of Valentine, the story tells that he was a Roman priest ( linh mục )
martyred during the time of Claudius II of Rome. Now Claudius II was a very bad emperor. He
made many terrible wars and he wanted the men to fight for him but the men didn’t want to.
Claudius thought that what made the men go against him was their own families, so he ordered that
no marriages be allowed. Valentine was a very good, kind priest of Rome. He helped the Romans a
lot then. As a result, he was arrested and put in prison as he was caught helping Christian couples to
marry each other or aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted ( bị xét xử ) by
Claudius in Rome. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime. Claudius took a liking to
this prisoner -- until Valentine tried to cause the Emperor to change his mind -- whereupon this
priest was condemned ( kết tội ) to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't
finish him, he was beheaded ( bị chặt đầu ) outside the Flaminian Gate. That was about AD 269.
1. The author is sure that Valentine’s Day is named after only one early Christian martyr living
in AD 496.
2. “valentines” means Saints Valentine.
3. Hand written greeting cards have replaced mass-produced ones..
5. If a dating couple accept mutual invitations to a dinner on Valentine’s Day, then they are
serious about each other.
6. In the USA, it is common that men say “ Happy Valentine’s Day” to their other male
friends. .
7. The U.S Greeting Card Association uses e-valentines to honor Saint Valentine on Valentine’s
Day by sending bonfires for, they say, fire represents passion. .
8. Claudius II hated Valentine because the priest helped the couples in love to get married to
each other and the people being persecuted by Claudius.
