Conservation is the sensible use and protection of natural resources including plants,
animals, mineral deposits, soils, clean water, clean air, and fossil fuels such as coal,
petroleum, and natural gas to ensure an adequate supply for future generation.

Natural resources are grouped into two categories, renewable and nonrenewable. A
renewable resource is one that may be replaced over time by natural processes, such as fish
populations or natural vegetation, or is inexhaustible, such as solar energy. The goal of
renewable resource conservation is to ensure that such resources are not consumed faster

than are replaced

Nonrenewable resources are those in limited supply that cannot be replaced or can be
replaced only over extremely long periods of time. Nonrenewable resources include fosasil
fuels and mineral deposits, such as iron ore and gold ore. Conservation activities for

nonrenewable resources focus on maintaining an adequate supply of these resources well
into the future.

C©u 26. What is the purpose of conservation mentioned in the passage ?
A. To make use of natural resources

B. To ensure an adequate supply of natural resources for future generations.
C. To maintain an adequate supply of water for future

D. To replace renewable resources.

C©u 29. Conservationists work to ensure that
A. fish are consumed faster than fossil fuels
B. people consume resources more economically
C. nonrenewable resources are consumed faster
D. renewable resources are replaced

C©u 30. Gold ore is mentioned as

Keeping fit and staying healthy have, not surprisingly, become a growth industry.(31)...
apart from the amount of money spent each year on doctors’ (32)...and approved medical
treatment, huge sums are now spent on health foods and (33)...of various kinds, from vitamin
pills to mineral water, not to mention health clubs and keep-fit (43)....and videos. We are
more concerned than ever, it seems, (35)....the water we drink and the air we breathe, and are
smoking less, though not yet drinking less alcohol.

This does not appear to mean that (36)...and sneezes have been banished, or that we
can all expect to live to a hundred. To give a personal example, one of my friends, who is a
keep- fit (37)..., a non-smoker and teetotaller, and who is very (38)...about what he
eats, is at present languishing in bed with a wrist in ( 39)...and a badly sprained ankle.
Part of his healthy (40)...is to play squash every day after work.

The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many

communities are burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity.
Converting waste products to gases or oil also an efficient way to dispose of wastes.

Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale, and coal
tars. But to date, that process has proven expensive. Other experiments are under way to
harness power with giant windmills. Geothermal power, heat from the earth, is also being
tested.

Some experts expect utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived from streams
and rivers. Fifty years ago hydroelectric power provided one third of the electricity used in
the United States, but today it supplies only 4 percent. The oceans are another potential
source of energy. Scientists are studying ways to convert the energy of ocean currents, tides,
and waves to electricity. Experiments are also underway to make use of temperature

differences in ocean water to produce energy.

C©u 41. Fifty year ago one third of the electricity in the United States was provided by...
A. water B. wind C. oil D. waste products

C©u 43. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as an alternative source
of energy?

A. Synthetic fuels B. Burning fuels
C. Geothermal power D. Electricity
