us when we are in difficulties are just unfaithful friends.

A true friend would remain with us whether we are rich or poor. Some people befriend the rich, simply for the sake of

getting benefits from them.

It is useless to have insincere friends, we have hundreds of suh friends, but these friends shall remain with us as long as

we are rich or powerful. It is better to have one or two good friends rather having hundreds of insincere ones.

A true friend will stand by us in our trials and tribulations. He will be the greatest source of consolation and comfort in our
adversities. So we must be careful in choosing our friendf. It is difficult to choose a sinccere friend overnight as it takes

years for us to find a sincere friend.

HELPING MOTHER AT HOME

Every child should love his mother. A girld or a boy learns many good things from mother. Mother teaches us to be
obedient, helpful, and friendly to others.

Ever since my young days I have always helped my mother in the kitchen. I get up early in the morning and help my mother
prepare breakfast. Then I clean the kitchen and sweep the floor. I also help mother wash the pots and pans.

On Sunday I follow my mother to the market and help her to carry vegetables and fish back home. Sometimes my mother
asks me to cut vegetables. I readily do and wash vegetables. I like to give small help whenever I am free from school work.
One day when my mother was sick, I cooked dishes for lunch. My mother is always happy and tells me that I should be
good to everyone.

Every mother will be happy if her children help her at home.

THE SUBJECT I ENJOY LEARNING

.

I learn many subjects in school. But the one I enjoy learning is History. History tells us how people lived a long
time ago. It also tells us how men had to struggle to make the world a better place to live in.

Many pupils, however, do not like to read History. They say that there are too many names and dates to remember.
But they do not understand that if we do not know about the past, we cannot understand the present property. For example,
if we wish to know how men did in the past to travel at night or to keep themselves warm. In fact, only a study of History will
make us realize that everything that we do today is the result of what our grandfathers and others before them did in the
past, so, History is the long story of man’s struggle through the ages. As we read this story, we learn many interesting
things.

I love History so much that I have a lot of history books in my house. Someday, I might even write a history books
myself.

ce upon a time, there lived on the coast of the beautiful South China Se a teenager, Ah Xin, who went fishing every morning
before dawn no matter whether it was the dead of winter or sweltering hot in summer.

One day, he wnet out fishing and didn’t come back untill his basket was filled. Walking on the burning sand, he was on his way
home when he saw a little goldfish on the sand.

Agreedy crow, flapping his wings, swoopted towards the little goldfish who lay gasping.Just then , Ah Xin hastened to the little
fish and picked her up.

Ah Xin hurried to the sea and put the little fish back into the water. After long minutes, the little goldfish began to wave her tail,
blowing out many bubbles. Raising her head, she looked at Ah Xin standing on the sand, then swam away into the deepsea.

Cooking dinner as he repaired his torn fishing net, Ah Xin smiled to himself when he thought of the little goldfish.

Ah Xin sang as he went fishing the next morning. He threw out his net many times without catching anything except the same
golden conch with each cast.

Dissapointed, he sat down on the beach. But the conch was crawling quietly towards Ah Xin.Holding up the conch

absent-mindedly, he was surprised to find that it was a wonderful beautiful shellfish.

Ah Xin took the conch home, put it in a basin of clear water and then went to fixing his torn net outside. It grew darker and
darker. Thinking there would be nothing for dinner, he dicided to go to bed early to forget his hunger.

Opening the door, he was amazed to see a splendid meal on the table! “It must be a dream,” he thought to himself, “or may be
someone has made a mistake!” He waited and waited but noone came to claim it.

Feeilng sure that noone would come, he began to eat the delicious dinner greedily.
The same thing happened for three days.

Ah Xin was so perlexed he didn’t sleep well, but finally he thought out a good plan. Acting on his idea, he got up before dawn
and went to see. But this time, he came back earlier than usual and climbed up in a tree, so he could see through the window. What he
saw greatly surprised him – a beautiful girl was cleaning and tidying up the room for him.

When the sun set, the girl put the delicous meal on the table and then sat on the bed sewing clothes for Ah Xin.

Ah Xin tiptoed into the room and greeted the girl, who was dismayed to have been found. Politely, he asked her name, where
she came from and where she was going, saying that if she were lost, he would escort her to her destination.

Shyly, the girl said, “My name is Conch, and I live on the other side of the sea. I want to learn singing from you and make
friends with you. Please let me stay.”

Overjoyed, he went out gathering flowers and orchids. Ah Xin made a fragrant flower bed for her. Every night the moonlight
would stream through the window onto the bed where the girl slept soundly. From then on, the little house always had the delicate
fragance of flowers.

Several years passed. Ah Xin had become a strong and handsome young man While Conch had grown up to be a beautiful
woman. Walking up from a dream one night, Ah Xin saw Conch was crying sadly.

Ah Xin went up to her, asking what had happened. “I am the daughter of the Queen of Sea,” said she, “I was the little goldfish
you saved several years ago. I’ve come to this world without my mother’s permission and now they are looking for me everywhere in
the Dragon Palace.”

“I will have to go back to the sea before sunset,” Conch continued, “otherwise, this world will suffer a flood and we can never
see each other again.” Holding her tightly, Ah Xin asked what he could do for her. “Go to the island od the Immortals and ask my
mother, the Queen of Sea, for help,” Conch said. “But you must take unbrearable risks!”

“So long as we can be together, I’m willing to take the risks and endure the sufferings,’ said Ah Xin and then sailed his small
boat onto the dark sea.

Huge waves surged on the sea. “Go back at once, or I’ll tear you to pieces!” howled the wind. “I’ll push you to the bottom of
the sea if you don’t go back at once! the sea roared. But Ah Xin gave no thought to them. He broke through the fierce wind and huge
waves, racing his small boat into the deep sea.

Fro the dark sea arose a great ball of red light. Standing on the Coral Island, the angry Queen of Sea, in a stern voice, asked
Ah Xin, who was caught on the sea by two crocodile guards, “You stole my daughter away. How dare you again come to my island?”

“I didn’t steal her,” said Ah Xin calmly. “I’ve come here to ask hor your help. I love Conch

very much. Please don’t force us to part!” “You can ask for anything , but don’t imagine you can have Conch!” said the Queen of Sea.
“Return to your home now. Come back and see me again if you’re not satisfied.”

Ah Xin was thrown back to the sea with his boat. Looking back, he could see nothing. Sadly, he sailed home. To his great
surprise, his shabby cottage had become a magnificent house!

Greeted by Conch, Ah Xin walked into the new and brightly shining house. “Congratulations on your safe return and wealth!”
she said. “In future, everything will turn out as you wish. But I’ll go back to the sea the day after tomorrow. Please don’t sing to the sea

any more. That way I won’t feel so very sad.”

Ah Xin followed Conch wherever she went. On the third night, despite the fierce wind and huge waves, he went again to the
island to see the Queen of Sea. “I don’t want gold nor silver,” said Ah Xin, “I want Conch only.” “She’ll have to return,” said the Queen
of Sea. “You can come here again in three days and choose whoever you want among the beautiful girls.”

Upon his return he found that Conch had already changed into an old woman. Weeping, Conch pleased, “Let me go! The
magic will make me even older in three days!” Ah Xin would not let her go.

Ah Xin loved Conch all the more. He didn’t move a step from her. Three days passed and night fell again. Ah Xin, buffetted by
the dangerous waves and storm, made a third voyage to see the Queen of Sea.

Smiling in triumph, the Queen of Sea said to Ah Xin, “Conch is an old woman now. People will laugh at you if you still keep her
by your side. There are many fairy maidens here, and you can choose anyone you like.” She waved her hand and a group of maidens
appeared before them.

But Ah Xin was not swayed by them in the lest. In his mind there was only Conch. “I want nothing in the world but Conch and I
don’t care whether she’s old and gray,” Ah Xin shouted to the Queen of Sea.

The Queen’s face now became stern. She waved to the rocodile guards, who dragged Ah Xin away and chained him to a
rock. Black waves crashed on his body. “Don’t imagine you can get away without letting Conch come back!” said the Queen of Sea.

Beaten by the evil waves and hurricane wind, Ah Xin cried defiantly, “No matter how cruelly you beat me, I won’t exchange
Conch, not even for a crystal palace!”

Standing upright, Ah Xin was like an iron man. The Queen of Sea, who didn’t look as fierce as she had been, waved her hand
to stop the wind and the waves. Ah Xin was untied and brought before the queen by the crocodile guards.

The Queen of Sea greeted Ah Xin with a smile, “Congratulations! Your bravery and faithfulness have won my daughter’s love!”
The Queen of Sea gave Ah Xin a pearl as Conch’s dowry. Then she told Ah Xin to close his eyes, and in relief he was wafted

home by a cool breeze.

Lit up by the bright pearl, Conch became as young and beautiful as she had been. As Conch rose to greet him Ah Xin found
that she was much more charmping than the pearl in his hand.

Not long after, many fishemen from faraway places came to congratulate them at their simple but happy wedding.

They spent eighty happy years together and then simply vanished. But even noe, fishermen can still hear Ah Xin’s loud and
clear singing every morning on the South China Sea.
