III. Read this passage carefully and then choose the best answer A, B, C or D to questions
below.

Telecommuting is some form of computer communication between employees’ homes
and offices. For employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data
or typing reports, the location of the computer is of no consequence. If the machine can
communicate over telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office
computer and transmit the material to their employers. A recent survey in USA Today estimates that
there are approximately 8.7 million telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising annually,
the trend does not appear to be as significant as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn't
telecommuting become so popular?

force scattered across the country would be too difficult or at least, systems for managing them are
not yet developed, thereby complicating the manager's responsibilities.

It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are often
reluctant to accept the opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular interaction with a group,
and many are concerned that they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are
not more visible in the office setting. Some people feel that even when a space in their homes is set
aside as a work area, they never nearly get away from the office.

A. The advantages of telecommuting.

B. A definition of telecommuting.
C. An overview of telecommuting.

A. More than predicted in Business Week.

B. More than 8 million.
C. Fewer than last year.

D. Fewer than estimated in USA Today.

78. The word “resistance” in the passage could best be replaced by
A. alteration

B. participation
C. opposition
D. consideration

79. The word t “telecommuter” in the passage refers to:

A. a person who works in an office and communicate with the boss by computer.
B. a person who uses computer to communicate with the boss but they are at home.
C. a person who sits at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports.
D. a person who commutes to a far place to work.

80. It can be referred from the passage that the author is:

experts at opening garbage cans, and in some places even deer wander suburban thoroughfares.
Several species of squirrel get along nicely in suburbia, but usually only one species is predominant
in any given suburb -fox squirrels in one place, red squirrels in another, gray squirrels in a third – for
reasons that are little understood. The diversity of birds in the suburbs is great, and in the South,
lizards thrive in gardens and even houses. Of course, insects are always present.

There is an odd biological sameness in these suburban communities. True, the palms of Los
Angeles are missing from the suburbs of Boston, and there are species of insects in Miami not found
in Seattle. But over wide stretches of the United States, ecological conditions in suburban biomes
vary much less than do those of natural biome. And unlike the natural biomes, the urban and
suburban communities exist in spite of, not because of, the climate.
