<b>RELATIVE CLAUSES</b>
<b>I/ RELATIVE CLAUSES:</b>


A relative clause is introduced by a relative pronoun such as which, who, when, … (Noun +
relative clause)


A relative clause is used to give extra information about something/someone or to identify
which particular thing/person we are talking about.


E.g:


1. Chinese is the language which most people in the world speak as a first language.
2. Travelling abroad is easier for people who can speak English.

<b>Lưu ý:</b>


1. who có thể thay thế cho whom; a preposition + whom (formal context);
who + S + V + preposition (informal context);


2. where/when = in/at/… + which; why = for which


<i>Ex: The house where/in which he lived as a child is somewhere around here. </i>


<i>Ex: The house which he lived in as a child is somewhere around here. (more informal)</i>
3. that có thể thay thế cho who/whom/which/when


‘that’ cannot be used after a preposition.


<i>Ex: The book that/which I liked was an English novel.</i>


<i><b>Ex: The people to whom/that I spoke were very helpful.( ko dùng that)</b></i>


<b>Exercise: Complete each of the following sentences with suitable relative pronouns.</b>

<b>III/ DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES: Có 2 loại mệnh đề quan hệ.</b>
<b>*** Defining relative clauses: ( Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định)</b>


<b>- Định nghĩa: Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định cung cấp thông tin cần thiết về một người hoặc một</b>
vật được nói tới. Thơng tin này cần để hiểu nên không thể lượt bỏ mệnh đề quan hệ hạn định.
- Trong văn viết chúng ta không sử dụng dấu phẩy trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định.


<b>- Lượt bỏ đại từ quan hệ: Nếu danh từ trước mệnh đề quan hệ hạn định là tân ngữ của động</b>
<b>từ, chúng ta thường bỏ đại từ quan hệ; </b>


<b>N + who/ whom/ which/ that + S + V</b>
<b>  N + S + V</b>


<b>Ex: 1. Travelling abroad is easier for people who can speak English.</b>


<b> 2. Chinese is a lsnguage which most people in the world speak as a first language.</b>

<b>Exercise: Combine each pair of sentences into one, using thr prompts provided:</b>

<b>***NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES:(Mệnh đề quan hệ ko xác định)</b>


<b>- Định nghĩa: Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định được đặt ngay sau một danh từ xác định và </b>
cung cấp thê thông tin bổ sung.


<b>Ex: London, which the capital of England, lies on the River Thames.</b>

<b>Ex: I ‘ve got a sister called Caroline, who is now on a tour around Canada.</b>

<b>- Lưu ý: </b>


+ MĐQH hạn định được ngăn cách với mệnh đề chính bằng 1, hay 2 dấu phẩy.
+ MĐQH hạn định có thể lượt bỏ mà không gây ra lỗi về nghĩa.


<b>+ Không dùng “that” thay cho who/whom/which </b>


<b>Exercise: Put a comma/ commas where necessary in the sentences. Cross out the relative </b>
<b>clause which can be omitted without causing confusion to the meaning of the sentence.</b>
