London Underground is a public transport system connecting central London and the
surrounding areas. Local people often called the system by its nickname, the Tube, because of
the shape of the underground tunnel. Built in 1863, it’s the oldest underground transport system

in the world. Consisting of only a few lines and a handful of stations in early 1900s, London
Underground nowadays is makes up 270 stations and 11 lines. The totall length of more than
400 kilometres makes London Underground the third longest metro system in the world. Despite
the name, only 45 percent of the rail line is below the ground. London Underground is a cheap
and convenient way to get around London. It’s estimated that there are 4.8 million passengers
using the system to get to work or go to school each day.
