<b>I. AIMS</b>

- Recognize and say the three Yy words correctly
- Do the corresponding actions
- Practice reading skills
- Sing letter Yy song

- Communicative approach.

+ Work individually, in pairs/ groups.

<b>1. Organization(1’)</b>
- Greetings: T – Ss greet each other.

<i><b>2. Warm up: (5’)</b></i>
<b>- Have students listen to the chant in lesson 1 and sing along. Repeat the chant </b>
without the CD, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands or snapping their
fingers
<b>- Put the phonics cards on the board. Name the items. One at a time, ask students</b>
to do corresponding actions then say the sound of the letter and words.
<i>E.g. Teacher: (Point to the yo-yo phonics card). Say /j/- yo-yo</i>
<i> Class: (mime playing with a yo-yo) / j /- yo-yo</i>

<b>- Line up the students in two teams (make </b>
sure two teams have the same number of
members)
<b>- Give the first student of each team a phonics</b>
card.
<b>- Say: ‘Go!” then the students say the words </b>
in the card and pass it over their heads to the
student behind them, who continues saying
the word and passing the card to the behind
one.
<b>- The last student in each line races to hand </b>
their phonics card to the teacher and says
the word.
<b>- The first team to do so wins (or wins a </b>
point- then continue the game).
While the students are passing the cards,
teacher can say: “Stop” and ask the students
holding the cards say the word loudly. If the
student holding the card says the word
correctly then he/ she wins a point for his/ her
team.
<b>Activity 4. Listen. Read Along (Track 77) </b>

<i><b>- Ask: Can you see the /j/- yo-yo? Point to it.</b></i>
<b>- Encourage the students to point to the </b>
picture of the word that the teacher says.
<b>- Play the CD. Have the students listen to the </b>
story once.
<b>- Play the CD again. The students listen and </b>
point to the pictures of the key words when
they hear them in the story
<b>- Read the story. The students follow in their </b>
books.
<b>- Teacher reads the printed words then let the </b>
students look at the pictures and say the
words.
<b>- Ask students work in pairs. One reads while</b>
the other checks, then they swap roles. Or
one reads the printed words while the other
looks at the pictures and says the words.
<b>- Go around the classroom to provide any </b>
necessary help.
<b>Activity: Say the Sight Words (3’)</b>
<i><b>- Point to and say the sight words: I, have, a, </b></i>
it, is, too, like, my, and
<b>- Have students repeat</b>
<b>- Have some students read them aloud.</b>
<b>Activity: Memory Master (5’)</b>
<b>- Put up the 3 phonics cards on the board.</b>
<b>- Choose 3 students to go to the board and </b>
make a line in front of the board.
<b>- Choose a student to be “Memory Master”.</b>
<b>- The 3 students choose a phonics card and </b>
say the word (without touching the cards-
each student chooses one phonic card)
<b>- The “Memory Master” must hand correct </b>
phonics cards to each student.
<b>Activity 5. Song (Track 78) (5’)</b>
<i><b>- Put up the yo-yo, yellow, yacht phonics </b></i>
cards up on the board.
<i><b>- Point to the yo-yo and yellow phonics card </b></i>
<i>and say: A yellow yo-yo. The students </i>
<b>- Follow the same procedure and present the </b>
rest of the song.
<b>- Play the CD. The students listen and sing </b>
along.
<b>- Play the CD again. The pupils sing and do </b>
corresponding actions. OR ask the students
<i>to take out their own yo-yo, yellow, yacht </i>
picture cards and place them on their desks.
Play the CD again. The students listen and
hold up the corresponding picture cards.
5. Song
<b>Activity: Correct teacher (5’)</b>
<b>- Prepare some phonics cards (from this </b>
lesson and previous unit)
<b>- Ask individual student to correct teacher’s </b>
statements.
<i>e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the yacht) Look! </i>
<i>It is a yellow yo-yo.</i>
<i><b>- Student 1: No! It is a yellow yacht! etc</b></i>
<b>4. Consolidation: (2’)</b>
Consolidate the content of the lesson

<b>Activity: Chinese Whispers Game</b>
<b>- Divide the class into 2 teams with the same numbers of students in each team.</b>
<b>- The first student of each team runs to the teacher (at the same time); teacher </b>
whispers a word/words/ a simple sentence to them.
<b>- The first student whispers the word/words to the student sitting next to or </b>
behind him/her and so on.
<b>- The last students say the word/words/sentence aloud.</b>
<b>- The team has the correct answer is the winner</b>
Play the song from Unit 2 (Track 78), the students listen and sing along

<b>start with the y sound. Say the y words </b>
<i><b>- Show the students the yogurt phonics </b></i>
<i><b>card. Point to it and say: /j/ - yogurt. Ask </b></i>
them to repeat.
<i><b>- Mime eating yogurt and say: /j/ - yogurt. </b></i>
Encourage the students to do the same
<b>- Say the letter. The students perform the </b>
action and say the letter and the word (if
they can).
<b>- Play the CD. The students listen, point to </b>
and repeat the word.
<b>- Point to the picture and have students </b>
name them.
<b>- Allow the students some time to colour in</b>
<i>the pictures of words start with the /j/ </i>
sound.
<b>- Go around the classroom providing any </b>
necessary help.
6. Find and colour the Yy letter
(Show the task on the screen)
<b>Activity: Craftwork (10’)</b>
<b>- Ask the students to take out their </b>
notebooks.
<b>- Ask them to choose one word then draw </b>
the letter Y and the picture of the item in
their notebooks.
<b>- Tell them to decorate the letter and the </b>
picture.
<b>- The first three students who finish will </b>
present their letters and pictures to the
class.
<b>Activity: Practice writing (5’)</b>
<b>- Ask a student to come to the board</b>
<b>- Say a word from the lesson and tell the </b>
students to write the word on the board.
<b>- Ask the rest of the class for correction</b>
<b>- Repeat with as many students as </b>
necessary
