The biologist's role in society as well as his moral and ethical responsibility in the discovery and
development of new ideas has led to a reassessment of his social and scientific value systems. A scientist
can no longer ignore the consequences of his discoveries; he is as concerned with the possible misuses of
his findings as he is with the basic research in which he is involved. This emerging social and political role
of the biologist and all other scientists requires a weighing of values that cannot be done with the accuracy
or the objectivity of a laboratory balance. As a member of society, it is necessary for a biologist now to
redefine his social obligations and his functions, particularly in the realm of making judgments about such
ethical problems as man's control of his environment or his manipulation of genes to direct further
evolutionary development.
Probably the greatest biological problem of the future, as it is of the present, will be to find ways to curb
environmental pollution without interfering with man's constant effort to improve the quality of his life.
Many scientists believe that underlying the spectre of pollution is the problem of surplus human
population. A rise in population necessitates an increase in the operations of modern industry, the waste
products of which increase the pollution of air, water, and soil. The question of how many people the
resources of the Earth can support is one of critical importance.
Although the solutions to these and many other problems are yet to be found, they do indicate the need for
biologists to work with social scientists and other members of society in order to determine the
requirements necessary for maintaining a healthy and productive planet. For although many of man's
present and future problems may seem to be essentially social, political, or economic in nature, they have
biological ramifications that could affect the very existence of life itself.

During the 19th century, it was common to hear people in Europe and America say that the resources
of the sea are unlimited. For example, a noted biologist writing in the mid -19th century commented that
none of the great sea fisheries is to be exhausted. Today though, there is evidence that the resources of the
sea are as seriously endangered as those of the land and the air, and that the endangered species include
Herring and Carp as well as the African Elephant, Indian Tiger, and the American Eagle.
Furthermore, the threats to fish are more alarming in some ways than the threats to animals and
birds.
This is because fishes are a much-needed food resources and people throughout the world depend on
fish as an important part of their dish, and the decline in the fish supply could have extensive effects on
hunger and population. Fishermen in the North Atlantic alone annually harvest 20 billion pounds of fish to
satisfy food demands, but it is important to recognize that these practices cannot continue without
depleting fish storage within the next few years. Sea resources are rapidly declining in many parts of
world, and the problem cannot be ignored. We can predict that food supplies in the sea cannot last forever.

45. What is the range of the decline in fish supply?
A. Europe and Asia. B. the whole world. C. Asia and America. D. America.

In the 1960s, the World Health Organization (WHO) began a campaign te eradicate the mosquitoes
that transmit the disease malaria. It was a noble goal, since malaria kills an estimated 3 million people
each year in the world's tropical regions, predominantly southern Africa, WHO led an effort to spray the
mosquitoes' habitat with a chemical pesticide-a poison used to kill insects-called DDT. Early results were
promising, and the mosquito was eliminated from the edge of its native range. The effort soon faltered,
however, and the eradication was dropped. How could a tiny mosquitoes thwart the best efforts of a large
group of well-funded scientists.
Situations like this one have occurred dozens of times in the last several decades. In a common
scenario, whenever a new type of pesticide is used to control agricultural pest, the early results are
encouraging. A relatively small amount of the poison dusted onto a crop may kill 99% of the insects.
However, the relatively few survivors of the first pesticides wave are insects with genes that somehow
enable them to resist the chemical attack. The poison kills most members of the insect population, leaving
only the resistant individuals to reproduce. And when they do, their offspring inherit the genes for
pesticide resistance. In each generation, the proportion of pesticide-resistant individuals in the insect
population increases, making subsequent sprayings less and less effective.
Since the widespread use of chemical pesticides began in the 1940s, scientists have documented
pesticide resistance in more than 500 species of insects. The problems such insects pose-through their
impact on agriculture and medicine-are just some of the many ways that evolution has a direct connection
to our daily lives. Everywhere, all the time, populations of organisms are fine tuning adaptions to local
environments through the evolutionary process of natural selection. Given the dynamics of the Earth and

and the people who work on the Sea Shepherd were hunting on the Atlantic Ocean near Portugal.
However, they had a strange prey; instead of hunting for animals, their prey was a ship, the Sierra. The
Sea Shepherd found the Sierra, ran into it and sank it. As a result, the Sierra never returned to the sea. The
Sea Shepherd, on the other hand, returned to its home in Canada. Paul Watson and his workers thought
that they had been successful.
Paul Watson tried to persuade the international whaling commission to stop the Sierra. However, the
commission did very little, and Paul became impatient. He decided to stop the Sierra and other whaling
ships in any way that he could. He offered to pay $25,000 to anyone who sank any illegal whaling ship,

The issue of equality for women in British society first attracted national attention in the early
20th century, when the suffragettes won for women the right to vote. In the 1960s feminism became the
subject of intense debate when the women’s liberation movement encouraged women to reject their
traditional supporting role and to demand equal status and equal rights with men in areas such as
employment and pay.
Since then, the gender gap between the sexes has been reduced. The Equal Pay Act of 1970, for
instance, made it illegal for women to be paid less than men for doing the same work, and in 1975 the
Sex Discrimination Act aimed to prevent either sex having an unfair advantage when applying for jobs.
In the same year the Equal Opportunities Commission was set up to help people claim their rights to
the household chores. In the 1980s, feminism became less popular in the US and there was less interest
in solving the remaining problems, such as the fact that most women still earn much less than men.
Although there is still discrimination, the principle that it should not exist is widely accepted.

Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become
extinct or have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles
in vast numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become
extinct.
What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused
almost entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but
in personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is contributing to the problem of
extinction. Animals such as the Bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the
world’s ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival –
and the survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries,
in an effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animals reserves. They
then charge admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks, and they often must also
depend on world organizations for support. This money enables them to invest in equipment and patrols to
protect the animals. Another response to the increase in animal extinction is an international boycott of

However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are
ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very
supportive of their child.

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and
zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was
hired by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but

Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we
communicate. Today's college students may not simply sit in a lecture or a library to learn about their
field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike simulated
experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible through
developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older
children attend school only once or twice weekly to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher. For
the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students should complete a minimum
number of study hour per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home at times that
suit their family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live classes in other
countries. In order to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software will automatically
monitor the number hours a week each student studies on line as well as that student's learning materials
and assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The software can then
identify the best learning activities and conditions for each individual student and generate similar
activities. It can be also identify areas of week achievement and produce special programs adjusted to the
students' needs.
33. What is the topic of the passage?
A. Students don't have to go to school any more
34. How many times are children who are older than 10 required to go to school weekly?

35. Who/what counts the number of hours per week that students spend learning?

36. What can't the software do?
A. Find out the best activities for the students B. Design materials for the students
C. Identify weaknesses of the students D. Monitor the time the students learn
37. What is NOT MENTIONED as a benefit of information technology to the students?
A. Students can learn at times that suit their schedule
B. Students can stay at home to learn
D. Students' weak achievement can be identified.

Cities develop as a result of functions that they can perform. Some functions result directly from the
ingenuity of the citizenry, but most functions result from the needs of the local area and of the surrounding
hinterland (the region that supplies goods to the city and to which the city furnishes services and other
goods). Geographers often make a distinction between the situation and the site of a city. Situation refers
to the general position in relation to the surrounding region, whereas site involves in physical
characteristics of the specific location. Situation is normally much more important to the continuing
prosperity of a city. If a city is well situated in regard to its hinterland, its development is much more
likely to continue. Chicago, for example, possesses an almost unparalleled situation. it is located at the
Similarly, it can be argued that much of New York City’s importance stems from its early and
continuing advantage of situation. Philadelphia and Boston both originated at about the same time as New
York and shared New York’s location at the Western end of one of the world’s most important oceanic
trade routes, but only New York possesses an easy-access functional connection (the Hudson-Mohawk
lowland) to the vast Midwestern hinterland. This account does not alone explain New York’s primacy, but
it does include several important factors. Among the many aspects of situation that help to explain why
some cities grow and others do not, original location on a navigable waterway seems particularly
applicable. Of course, such characteristic as slope, drainage, power resources, river crossings, coastal
shapes, and other physical characteristics help to determine city location, but such factors are normally
more significant in early stages of city development than later.
