<b>I. Objectives:</b>
<b> 1. Education aims: Students know about the World Cup.</b>
<b> 2. Knowledge:</b>
a. General knowledge: Students can talk about the World Cup winners.
b. Language:The simple present tense. Vocabulary about football.
<b> 3. Skills: - Asking and answering questions about the World Cup.</b>
- Talking about the World Cup winners.
<b>II. Anticipated problems: Sts might not have sufficient vocabulary to talk about the </b>
topic.
<b>III. Teaching aids: Textbook, chalk, board, handouts, posters.</b>
<b>IV. Procedures:</b>

<i><b>1. Warm- up: (5 minutes) Jumble words</b></i>
<i>Aims :Sts get used to the topic.</i>
- Divide the class into small groups of 3 or 4 and introduce
the games: Sts are to rearrange the letters into meaning
words.
- Write some groups of letters on the board.
- Ask sts to work in groups.
- Ask some goups to give answers .
- Introduce the new lesson: Today we will talk about the
World Cups.
<b>2. Before you speak: (12 minutes)</b>
<i>Aims: :to focus sts on the topic and introduce the words</i>
<i>and phrases used in the task.</i>
<i><b>+ Task 1: A World Cup 2002 quiz</b></i>
- Ask S to name the team in the photos on page 145:
- Before doing the task T give S some new words:
<i> + draw (v,n): e.g. a score of 1- 1</i>
<i> + lose the match to sb</i>
<i> + defeat sb: beat sb</i>
<i> + penalty shoot - out</i>
- Give S some handouts and in each handout T writes two
questions about the four football teams:
<i>Q1. How many times has Italy won the trophy up to World </i>
<i>Cup 2006?</i>
<i>Q2. Who was the captain of the French national football </i>
<i>team in World Cup 2006?</i>
<i>Q3. What was the score of the World Cup 2006 final?</i>
<i>Q4. Which team was the runner-up in the World Cup </i>
<i>2006?</i>
<i>Q5. Who was the head coach of the German team in World</i>
<i>Cup 2006?</i>
<i>Q6. What nationality was the top scorer in World Cup </i>
- Listen to the T.
- Work in groups and find out the
words.

<i>runner-up,host country, champion.</i>
- Answer the question of the T.

- Listen and write down these words
into their notebooks.

<i>Aims: Sts can talk about the World Cup tournaments.</i>
<i><b>+ Task 2: </b></i>
- Ask sts to read the information about 17 World Cup
tournaments in the table.
- Read the model dialogue aloud and then ask two pairs to
read the dialogue again.
- Ask sts to work in pairs to make similar dialogues about
the World Cup tournaments.
- Move round to make sure that Sts are working and to help
if necessary.
- Ask sts to compare their answers with other pairs.
- Ask some pairs to report.
- Listen and give remarks.
<b>4. After you speak: (10 minutes)</b>
<i>Aim: S can talk about the World Cup winners</i>
<i><b>+ Task 3: </b></i>
<i>- Introduce the task: S are going to take turns to talk about </i>
<i>the World Cup winners in different years.</i>
- Ask Sts to read the model in the textbook.
- Ask Sts to work in groups and take turns to talk about the
WC winner in a certain year.
- Go around to check and to offer help.
- Ask some Sts to talk about different World Cup if time
permit.
<b>5. Homework: (2 minutes)</b>
Write a paragraph to talk about World Cup 2006.

- Read the table in 2 minutes.
