Part 3: Read the following passage and choose the correct answer
The ruined temples of Angkor are perhaps one of the most impressive Seven Wonders of the
World. Located in modern day Cambodia near Lake Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Asia,
Angkor was the seat of power for the Khmer Empire from the ninth to the most impressive ones in
the world, rivaling the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Why this mighty civilization died out is a question
that archeologists are now only beginning to ponder. The answer, it turns out, may be linked with
the availability of fresh water.
One possible explanation for the downfall of the Khmer Empire has to do with the inhabitants‟ irrigation
system. The temple and palaces of Angkor were constructed around a series of artificial
reservoirs and canals which were annually flooded to capacity by the Mekong River. Once filled,
they were used to irrigate the surrounding rice patties and farmland during the course of the year.
Farmers were completely dependent upon the water for their crucial rice crop. Without consistent
irrigation, the farmers would have been unable to maintain functional crop production.
Scientists speculate that toward the end of the Khmer Empire the hydraulic systems of the
reservoirs and canals broke down. The construction of hundreds of sandstone temples and palaces
required an enormous amount of physical labor. In addition, as the capital of the Khmer Empire,
Angkor contained upwards of one hundred thousand people who resided in and around Angkor. In
order to feed so many people, the local farmers were driven to grow food quicker and more
efficiently. After centuries of continual use, the irrigation system was pushed beyond its capacity.
Soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and the loss of water led to decrease in the food supply. With less
food available, the people of Angkor slowly began to migrate to other parts of Cambodia thus
leaving the marvelous city of Angkor to be swallowed by the jungle. Therefore, it is speculated that
the Khmer Empire may have fallen victim to its own decrepit infrastructures.

GAME SHOW SCANDALS
A. Charles Van Dorren
In 1950s America, television was becoming a part of everyday family life and quiz show was a big
favourite with the viewing public. That meant sponsors were happy to pay large amounts of
B. Michael Larson
Whereas quiz shows involve knowledge, or a combination of knowledge and luck, game shows
sometimes involve pure luck. Contestants spin a wheel, turn over a card, or pick a number at
random in order to win or lose. One such show was Press Your Luck, in which an electronic board
contained a random pattern of bonus boxes and 'Whammies'. A bonus box meant a cash prize, but
a 'Whammy' meant losing everything. The show was on air from 1983 to 1986 and was not a huge
success. But one viewer saw it as a way to get rich. Micheal Larson realised that the patterns om
the electronic board were not genuinely random. Having videoed the show, he watched parts of its
frame by frame in order to memorise the patterns. When he appeared on the show as a
contestant, he used his knowledge to win a total of $110,237 by avoiding all the Whammies.
Behind the scenes, the show's producers were panicking. Nobody had ever won this much before
on a single game show. The TV company refused to hand over the prize money, their lawyers
claiming that Larson had cheated. Larson argued that he had not broken any rules, and eventually,
he won the argument and received his money. However, the TV company declined to invite him
back for the next edition of the show.
C. Major Charles Ingram
anything unusual at the time. However, while the show was being recorded, some of the TV crew
became
suspicious because one member of the studio audience appeared to be coughing loudly at
particularly crucial moments. The TV company refused to give Major Ingram his prize, and the
police started an investigation. This led to a prosecution, and Ingram was found guilty of cheating.
His wife was also convicted, together with a university lecturer called Tecwen Whittock, the man
whose cough had supposedly given away the correct answers. To this day, all three maintain that
they are innocent.
Write the correct person: A, B or C to indicate the game show contestant who:
The game show contestant who: Answers

1 It is very difficult to succeed in the music business; nine out of ten bands that release a

exist only a short time and then slowly waste away just unnoticed.
Objects of sheerest beauty, they have been called . Appearing in an endless variety of
shapes they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be glassy blue, green or purple, tinted faintly or
in darker hues. They are graceful, stately, inspiring in calm, sunlit seas. But they are also called
frightening and dangerous, and that they are, in the night, in the fog, and in storms. Even in clear
weather one is wise to stay a safe distance away from them. Most of their bulk is hidden below
the water, so their underwater parts may extend out far beyond the visible top. Also, they may roll
over unexpectedly, churning the waters around them.
Icebergs are parts of glaciers that break off, drift into the water, float about awhile, and
finally melt. Icebergs afloat today are made of snowflakes that have fallen over long ages of time.
They embody snows that drifted down hundreds, or many thousands, or in some cases maybe a
million years ago. The snows fell in the polar region and on cold mountains, where they melted
only a little or not at all, and so collected to great depths over the years and centuries.
As each year‟s snow accumulation lay on the surface, evaporation and melting caused the
snowflakes slowly to lose their feathery points and become tiny grains of ice. When new snow fell
on top of the old, it too turned to icy grains. So blankets of snow and ice grains mounted layer
upon layer and were of such great thickness that the weight of the upper layers compressed the
lower ones. With time and pressure from above, the many small ice grains joined and changed to
larger crystals, and eventually the deeper crystals merged into
a solid mass of ice.
