Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions

Mercury is the smallest member of the sun's family. It is only 3.100 miles across. It is
also the sun's swiftest planet. Its yearly journey round the sun is only 85 days.

Mercury always keeps one side towards the sun. On this side it is always day, on the

other side always night. We only see the lighted side.

Mercury appears to us like a yellowish orange star. The nearest planet to the sun, it is
always seen near the sun, either just before sunrise or soon after sunset. People
sometimes call mercury the morning star or evening star.

Mercury is half the size of the earth. Because it is much lighter, it has much less gravity.
If you can visit Mercury in a spaceship, you will find it a strange world. Its low gravity
makes you feel very light. If your weight on earth is 100 pounds, your weight on Mercury
is only 27 pounds.

Looking at the sun from Mercury, you can see that it's much more brilliant than it is seen
from the earth. And the yellow centre of the sun appears three times bigger from
Mercury.

On its lighted side, Mercury's temperature is about 300 degrees centigrade. But the dark
side is extremely cold, but 150 degrees below zero so mercury is probably the coldest as
well as the hottest of the planets.

30. When can we see Mercury? - We can see it_______.
A. just before the sunset

B. just before sunrise
C. after the sunset

D. both A and C are correct

31. Why do we weigh much on the earth than on Mercury? - Because_______.
A. Mercury is nearer to the sun.

B. Mercury has got less gravity than the earth.
C. Mercury is much hotter.

D. none are correct.

32. Why does the sun look bigger when it is seen from Mercury? - Because_______.
A. Mercury is the smallest planet of the sun.

B. Mercury is nearer to the sun.
C. Mercury is a light planet.

Most young couples have meals regularly in their parents’ home with little or no pay, and
give their children to the care of old couple free of charge. Investigations have shown that
parents of many couples don’t mind providing meals and caring for their children.

However, this practice shouldn’t become an accepted social custom.

The old couples’ expense on food has already increased while young couples spend more
on clothing and furnishing and less on food. If this trend continues, many young couples
might take these privileges for granted and become more dependent.

It is not the right for young peoples to make the use of the old couples’ love, not only
because our nation is well – known for its special respect paid to the elderly , but also
because the young must become independent. What young people should do is to
become more considerate towards their old parents. After long years of hard work, they
are worthy of such consideration.

It is often considered that the schoolyard is where bullies go to make other kids a
miserable school life, but a new study suggests that classrooms are another popular place.
The study, presented recently at the American Public Health Association's yearly meeting
in Philadelphia, is based on the results of the research from more than 10,000 middle
school students who answered questions online.

Of those researched, 43% said they'd been physically bullied within the last month. A bit

being called hurtful names. About one third said groups had excluded them to hurt their
feelings. 28% said their belongings had been taken or broken; 21% said someone had

been bullied in more than one way over the previous month.

The study authors mentioned that 8% of the students who answered said they had missed
school at least once during the school year because of fear of being bullied. 25% said
they had taken other actions, such as missing recess, not going to the bathroom or lunch,
missing classes, or staying away from some area of the school to escape from

English is one of the most popular languages in the world. It comes second in the number
of speakers after Chinese. In Vietnam, more and more people are studying English and
they consider it a key to success. However, not everyone knows how to learn English
effectively.

The best way to improve the four skills:speaking, listening, reading, and writing is to
practice regularly. You should make use of every opportunity to speak English with
friends in class or at English speaking clubs or ourselves in front of the mirror. Learning
by heart all the words does not help much if you do not read a lot because you will easily

forget what you have learnt. Reading books, listening to radio and watching films are
better ways to memorize words. Besides, English learners should not be so shy because
making mistakes is unavoidable in learning foreign languages. Practicing speaking a lot
is a good way to correct your mistakes.

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage
of clean water. Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain,
industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable.

Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake
Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of
animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the
world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial effluent which
pour into the lake every day. Even though laws have been made, the governments do not
have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The
Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world's water surface, but it is the dumping
ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost sixteen countries regularly throw
industrial wastes a few miles offshore.

Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean
water in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by
pollution and sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect
it. What should we do to save this precious source?

28. What is the main idea of the reading text?

A. People are throwing poisons into bodies of water.

B. Clean water is becoming scarce due to pollution and sewage.

C. Laws have been made to prevent countries from polluting the environment.
D. Sea water is increasingly polluted by industrial wastes.

29. According to the reading text, Lake Baikal ________.
A. is the smallest lake in Russia

B. has 1,300 rare and endangered animals
C. is located in the Mediterranean Sea

D. gets a large amount of industrial sewage every day
30. What does the word "them" in the passage refer to?
