Southern Cross Care selects KRONE
HIGHBAND
When Southern Cross Care (Vic) established its new Central
Office in Oakleigh it selected KRONE Australia’s Category 6
GLOBAL LEADER
solution for its communications
Established in 1969, Southern Cross Care (Vic) is a
community-based organisation providing excellence
in quality care to over 2,000 seniors in metropolitan
Melbourne and regional Victoria.
”We currently run a 1 Gigabit backbone and 100
Megabit to the workstation, the plan is for 1
Gigabit Ethernet to the desk-top within 5 years. The
Network controls all of the financials, aged care
specific software, desk top publishing and all of the
standard Windows programs,” said Peter Hosking
IT Manager for SCC (Vic). “We selected Category 6
cabling infrastructure as it’s imperative that we
provide the best cabling infrastructure for our
future needs.”

Mr Hosking pointed out that SCC
(Vic) investigated various options
such as pair-managed and RJ45
solutions from KRONE and other
suppliers, and Patch-by-Exception
(PBE) solutions exclusive to KRONE.
“We conducted extensive
research on the solutions available
and discovered that an RJ45 cross-
connect solution could become
messy and unmanageable. A PBE
solution, such as the HIGHBAND 25,
on the other hand, eliminates the
number of patch cords needed -
thus reducing the mess.
“By utilising the off-cuts of the
horizontal cable for cross-
connecting, costs are kept a
minimum, clutter is minimised and
the cable can be cut to length,
which improves performance and
cable management.
“Also, in selecting the HIGHBAND 25 solution we
freed up valuable 19” rack space in the computer
room,” said Mr Hosking.
“We’re using KRONE’s Premis
NET
Category 6
GLOBAL LEADER
solution of two 900pr KRONE

HIGHBAND 25 verticals, connected to 200 KM8
outlets,” said Mr. Hosking. “The value of this part
of the project is around $30,000.”
An important consideration in the design of the
installation was future expansion. Three outlets
were placed at each work area and were colour
coded green for voice, blue for data and yellow for
spare. Colour coded label strips were used at the
cross-connect for easy identification of the circuits.

Glen Johnston, Marketing and Product
Development Manager for KRONE Australia
explains, “The Patch-by-Exception (PBE)
methodology means SCC (Vic) can activate any
moves, additions or changes immediately by using a
patch cable in a simple plug and play operation.”
KRONE 15 year Endorsed Installer, Citywide
Electrical & Data P/L carried out the design and
installation. Cengiz Kuyruk, Managing Director,
Citywide Electrical & Data said, “Whilst the original

specification called for an RJ cross-connect solution,
after discussions with Mr Hosking regarding the
research that SCC (Vic) had conducted and the new
technologies available, it was agreed that KRONE’s
HIGHBAND 25 pair-managed solution was the best
option.”
“Price was not a deciding factor in the final
decision”, said Mr Hosking, “It was all about
performance and functionality. We were looking for
something that was future-proof. The fact that the
HIGHBAND 25 was the latest technology and could
be easily upgraded made it very appealing.
“With the HIGHBAND 25 the facility is there to
hard wire. Not having to patch provided advantages
such as improved performance, neatness and
improved cost effectiveness. Another benefit of the
KRONE solution was that KRONE offered a 15-year
warranty on the cabling infrastructure.”
The installation is part of a $300,000 project
which incorporates the communications
infrastructure, building wiring, lighting automation,
security, access control and electrical.
“KRONE’s Victorian team, in particular Mark
Blake, have worked closely with us to ensure we
gain the maximum benefit from our Premis
NET
solution,” said Mr Hosking.
