Pronunciation
Practise reading the following sentences, paying attention to the stressed syllables.
1. Tell me the time.
2. Show me the way.
3. He bought some carrots and cabbages.
4. Come for a swim.
5. Look at the clock on the mantelpiece.
6. I think he wants to go tomorrow.
7. It's not the one I want.
8. Most of them have arrived on the bus.
9. Walk down the path to the end of the canal.
10. I’m going home today for Christmas.
11. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
12. If you don't have the best, make the best of what you have.
Grammar: Modals (Động từ khuyết thiếu)
may – might
- Possibility: It might rain later, so take an umbrella.
- Giving permission: You may go out this evening, Alice.
- Asking for permission: May I borrow your Ipad, please?
- Expressing wishes: May the new year bring good crops.
- Speculation about past actions: She’s late. She may have missed the plane.
MAY and MIGHT can be normally interchanged without a significant difference in meaning.
However, MIGHT often implies a smaller chance of something happening when expressing
possibility.
E.g: It MAY rain. (70% chance)
It MIGHT rain. (40% chance)
When expressing wishes or permission, only MAY is used.
Exercise 1: Complete the sentences, using may/might with one verb in the box.

needn’t/ don’t need to + V
- needn’t và don’t need to được sử dụng khi “cho phép” ai đó không cần phải làm việc gì trong một tương
lai gần hoặc khi nói ai đó không nên làm việc gì.
E.g: You don’t need/ needn’t water the garden. It’s going to rain.
Exercise 2: Complete the sentences, using needn't, with one of the verbs in the box.
