Work in groups. Choose a heritage site in Viet Nam and find information about it. Then discuss and
make a proposal for its preservation and protection. Present your ideas to the class.

Imperial Citadel of Thang Long:
- Located in Ba Dinh District, the heart of Hanoi.
- It’s a cultural complex comprising royal places and monuments.
- Most of the citadel was demolished in the early 20th century. The only structure to remain intact is the
Hanoi Flag Tower, 40-meter-tall stone fortress offering expansive views of Ba Dinh Square and Hanoi City
Centre. It was built in 1812 during the Nguyen Dynasty.
- It most recently operated as a military base until it was opened to the public to mark the 1,00-year
anniversary of Hanoi and its UNESCO World Heritage listing.
- In 1805, when the capital was relocated to Hue, King Gia Long demolished the citadel and replaced it with
one in French style, which he used when he travelled in the north, though he kept the Kinh Thien Palace; it
was pulled down in 1815 as its wooden columns had rotted. In 1897, the French demolished the citadel
completely to make way for a modern quarter as they planned to build a new city. After 1954, the area
became the head office of the Ministry of Defence and the commander-in-cheif of the Vietnamese People’s
Army.

- The Hanoi People’s Committee is now responsible for managing the heritage.
- The site has become one of the main tourist attractions in Hanoi.
- What to do to preserve/ protect the heritage:
+ The structures are given additional strength and reinforced to undo the harms done by pollutionm acid
rains, and other chemicals over the years.
+ The foundations are also improved so as to make these structures natural-disasters resistant.
+ prevent people from scribbling on the walls.
+ spread awareness around about these monuments and their importance.
