Activity 1. Your English class is going to hold a discussion on the topic "Should we take a gar year
after secondary school graduation?” Work in groups to prepare vour presentation Discuss reasons for
taking a gap year and reasons for immediately entering collegi or university.
Reasons for taking a gap year:
- have more time to decide what we want to do
- have the opportunity to earn money
- learn a new language
- gain volunteer experience
- experience a different culture
Reasons for immediately entering college or university:

- interrupt the education path
- be difficult to resume studies
- some studies have shown that many students who wait instead of going to college immediately after high
school end up never going at all
Activity 2. Present your group’s opinions to the class.

Hi everyone!
We are group number 1. There are five members in our group, including Xuan, Minh, Tuan, Hung, Lan. We
are going talk about the pros and cons of taking a gap year after secondary school graduation. Our
presentation is divided into 2 main parts. In the first part, we will talk about the pros of taking a gap year and
in the second part we will talk about the cons of taking a gap year, or in other words, the reasons for
immediately entering collage or university.
Well the idea of taking a gap year after the secondary school graduation sounds like something new to most
of us, but it has been quite common in Western countries. Why is that? We think there are several bebefits of
taking a gap year off. First of all, taking a gap year and not immediatly entering college or university gives
us more time to decide what we really want to do in our lives, whether to become a doctor, a teacher or a
chef? This is one of the important questions that every individual has to answer. So giving ourselve some
time to think about it is a good idea. It’s better late than making the wrong choice. Secondly, taking a gap
year gives us the opportunity to earn money, so that we can be well-prepared for our study life. Paying for
tuition fees at college is not easy for some families. Therefore, going out to work helps us earn some money
to support our parents. Thirdly, for those from rich families, taking a gap year to travel abroad is a good way
to enjoy themselves in addition to experiencing new cultures.
While taking a gap year has some advantages, it also has certain disadvantages. Firstly, it interrupts the
education path for a while and when it’s over, we may find it somewhat difficult to continue our studies.
Some studies have shown that many students who wait instead of going to college immediately after high
school end up never going at all. Secondly, if you aren’e goal-oriented you can easily get disorganized, and
you may finally end up achieveing nothing during the gap year. Therefore, it requires strong determination
and a detailed plan to take a gap year off.
So... we have talk about the advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year off. We are glad to listen to
