CULTURAL READING

Small Talk

Track 16

A

5

10

15

20

25

mericans often have short conversations, called small talk, with strangers whom they meet
on the street. Such chats occur at bus stops, on buses, in elevators, while waiting in line —
almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. These short verbal exchanges are a
way to say hi and express friendliness. They usually center on broad topics such as the weather,
customer service, movies or TV shows, or a particular consumer product. Personal questions about
money, family, religious beliefs or politics are off limits during these conversations. When making
small talk, it’s best to ask open-ended questions. For example, if you ask visitors whether they like
your city, they may say simply, “Yes.” But if you ask “What do you think
of our city,” they will have more freedom in how they answer. This
type of question also shows that you are interested in their
opinion. Usually, if you appear to be interested
in what people are saying, they feel more
comfortable talking with you.
Americans end many conversations with
the phrase “Have a nice day” or “Have a good
day.” Store clerks, especially, say this to
customers after purchases are made. Though
at first it might sound insincere, studies
have shown that it actually makes many
people feel better. It gives people a sense

that others care about them, rather than
ignoring them. The American greeting
“How are you” has a similar effect. Even
though the questioner does not really care
about the answer, simply asking the
question often raises the other person’s
spirits.

Discussion Questions
1. Have you ever made small talk with a foreigner?
What did you think of it?
2. Do people in your country usually make small talk with strangers? If so,
what kinds of topics do they talk about?
3. How do people in your country generally end conversations?
4. What are some subjects in your country that are impolite to bring up with strangers?
