*Useful tips
- Scan the passage to locate and find the relevant information. Pay closer attention since the answers
are usually paraphrased
- The answers are usually in the first paragraph or in the heading.

*Useful tips
- Interpret what the passage implies
- Questions include most likely, might

found in both the questions and the reading passage.

b/ Skimming
- Get an overall impression of the content of the passage.
- Locate the key words
Useful tips
* Read the titles.
* Read the introduction or the first paragraph.
* Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
* Read any headings and sub-headings.

- Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
- Notice any italicized or boldface, underlined,… words or phrases.
* Read the summary or last paragraph.
c/ Scanning
- Locate the specific information in the passage: names, dates, numbers, specific words,...
- Only find the answer, ignoring unrelated information.
Useful tips:
* State the specific information you are looking for.
* Anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer.

* Use headings to help identify which sections might contain the specific information.
* Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.
d/ Paraphrasing
- Rephrasing ideas or information in other ways without changing the meaning.
For example:
The hardest woodwind instrument to team is the oboe.
=> The oboe is the most difficult woodwind instrument to master.
Useful tips:
+ Use synonyms:
- a car exhibition = an auto show
- to identify problems in the system = to expose defects in the system
- Vehicular access will be temporarily restricted = Some roads will be closed for a certain
period of time.
+ Use opposite words:
- The construction will improve the traffic flow. = The construction will ease traffic
congestion.
- The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. = The museum is closed to the
public on Monday.
- to encourage better attendance = to have fewer absences
+ Specific noun -> Common noun:
- She is eating an apple. = She is eating a fruit.
- He bought a microwave oven. = He purchased a kitchen appliance.
- rare and endangered species = certain species
+ Common noun -> Specific noun:
- transportation service = bus, subway, train, and airline service
- fossil fuels = coal, oil, and gas
- footwear = shoes, sandals, boots
+ Change word forms:
- to take occasional walks = to walk occasionally
- to dress comfortably = to wear comfortable clothing

2. Strategies for single passage.
Step 1: Preview the introductory sentence to identify the form of the passage. (Memo, article, email,
letter, advertisement,…)
Step 2: Indicate the purpose? Who is the writer? Whom is the passage written to? Each paragraph’s
purpose?
Step 3: Read the questions about the passage to decide what types of questions they are.
Step 4: Skim and scan the reading passage to find out keywords in the questions.
Step 5: Read the questions and the paragraph containing the keywords carefully again. Apply
appropriate strategies to deal with each particular type of question.
