What is Cloud Server Hard Drive? HDD or SSD?
Do you know that Cloud Server uses hard disk drive or hard drive like
computers? So, what is server hard drive? How many types of hard drive?
What is server hard drive?
Hard drive is a hard device used to storage data like: Operating System (OS),
software and other files. The terminal of a hard drive contains a cable gateway
to connect with the mainboard. Depending on type of drive, used cable may be
SATA or PATA. Most hard drives jave jumper settings on the back to determine
how the motherboard recognizes the drive when there is more than one drive.
Hard drives are one of the most integral parts of a computer, also a server. They
play not only role in the storage and retrieval of data for the user, they also
support or change some abilities of the server such as boost speed, data copy
and data security.
How many types of server hard drives are there?
Server hard drive as well as computer hard drive typically have two main
categories: Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Solid State Drive (SSD).
HDD is a hard disk drive for servers like for computer, the basic principle is to
have a circular disk made of alumium (glass, ceramic…) covered with a magnetic
material. Between the drives, there is a rotary motor to read/write data, which,
together with these devices, is electronic circuitry that directs the reader /
writer to the position of the disc from the moment it is rotated in order to
decode information. So your operations from computer to another (other
computers, usb , hard drive) faster or slower depends on this part. Unlike
computers, servers, especially cloud servers, requires a large memory capacity,
so a server can attach multiple HDD. In addition, HDD has ability to extend
lifetime of the server.
HDD server has two major intefaces: SATA (Serial Advanced Technology
Attachment)- serial communication infterface and SAS (serial Attached SCSI) –
the fastest data transfer protocol available.
SSD is a solid-state hard drive that using flash chip to store data. That means if
the data is fragmented like on the HDD, the data access speed is not affected.

There is no delay when users need to access data on the server.
SATA, SAS and PCIe are 3 popular types of SSD server.
Now, in war to dominate the market, technology groups and server providers
have developed many hybrid hard drivers that are combination of both HDD

and SSD functions. These hybrid hard drivers in top competitors with tradition
HDD and SSD which can be mentioned here include: Hybrid HD (high-capacity
of HDD and high-speed of SSD), SSHD (solid state hybrid drive, disk drives for
storage and NAND Flash for retrieval, exporting data) and Turbo SSD
(combination of a high-speed SSD and a high-capacity HDD in which data used
frequently is stored on SSD, not frequently on HDD).
HDD or SSD?
Compared with the traditional hard drive HDD, server SSD is researched and
improved a lot. Some superior features of SSD:
+ Boost speed of operating system
+ Low power consumption
+ Data logging or retrieval speed
+ The speed of the software
+ Higher data protection
+ Small size and not affected by magnetism
+ Corrected the status of the server loudness, support better server
cooling and more.
However, there must be reasons that HDD still the most common choice for
server hard drive. Some of these reasons can be:
+ Low price: 1Tb HDD from 99$ while 1TB SSD from 1000$ with the same
provider
+ High capacity: with the same money, capactity of an HDD may twice or
three times higher than an SSD
+ Simple design: just disk and engine

+ Mantaining easily
In conclusion, pick up server SSD when there are high priorities of system
performance, server security and data speed; HDD when there are needs of
data storage capactity, low capital and medium security as well as system
performance.
