Competitive sports and the disciplines of team games have always been an important part of school life in
Britain. They were seen as a way of encouraging team spirit. Today, however there has been a change of
emphasis in many schools away from the traditional team games such as football, rugby and cricket, to
individual sports like track and field, gymnastics or swimming.
Some teachers argue that team games are elitist because only the best take part while the majority of the
students can only watch. It is better to have sport for all, they claim, encouraging all the students to take part,
regardless their ability. The emphasis should be on individual sports, which teenagers can carry on into adult
life.
a) Which of the following statements is NOT true?

VALENTINE’S TRADITIONS
Every year people all over the world celebrate special days to remember their friends and the
ones they love. On February 14th, they celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. St. Valentine was a Christian priest,
who secretly organized marriage ceremonies and because of that war arrested and out in prison. Now he is
the patron saint of people who are in love. Today St. Valentine’s Day is the most romantic holiday of the year.
In Great Britain, St. Valentine’s Day began to be well known around the seventeenth century. At
that time, friends and lovers exchanged handwritten notes and decorated them with flowers, hearts and birds.
Then. printed cards became popular and nowadays about one billion valentines are sent each year. An
interesting thing is that women buy and send about 85 per cent of these cards!
This special day also has its regional traditions. In Norfolk a person called Jack’ Valentine knocks
on the back door and leaves sweets and presents there for children. In Wales people celebrate the day of the
patron saint of the Welsh lovers (St. Dwynwen) on January 25th but they also remember St. Valentine’s Day.
On Valentine’s Day in Japan women, not men, give chocolates or flowers to the ones chocolate. This day in
Japan is called” White Day”.

3. Read the passage and choose the best answer A, B, C or D to the questions 31-35.
Early in the history of humans, for over a million years, population growth was close to zero. Then,
after the devastation of the Black Death in the 1300s, the population in the Western word began to increase
rapidly and by the 1800s it had doubled in size.
The industrial Revolution improved living conditions, better farming techniques provided more food
and, as a result, from the middle of the eighteenth century, the death rate rate decreased. The birth rate,
however, did not begin to decline until about 1875, and this lag of almost a century led to the dramatic
increase in populations.
In the period 1750 to 1950, North America, Europe and Japan increased their populations to five
times their original size. The world population was two billion by the 1930s. In the 1930s, the feminist
movement began, and the number of women in paid employment rose. Birth rates in the industrialized West
declined dramatically. Children became an economic liability.
After World War Two, birth rates increased in developed countries and the death rate declined in
less developed countries. Between 1947 and 1989, the world population doubled and, if the current estimated
growth rate of 1.67 percent per year continues, the world population will double again in the next forty years.
