In vietnam, there are many holidays in a year such as: mid- autumn festival, lunar new year, and
so on. among them, Tet holiday is the biggest annual celebration of Vietnam in the first days of lunar
New Year. Tet holiday is very special for Vietnamese families to reunite and celebrate together.
This is a traditional period between an old year and a new year. therefore, the preparation for Tet
holiday is taken place very soon . It often starts a week before the actual celebration. at that time,
everyone is busy with buying necessary items such as: clothes, food, shoes and so on. VNese often
visit spring flower market to choose their most satisfied flower pots. peach blossom, kumquat, yellow
daisy are often used to decorate in this event.
Moreover, food is also well prepared. there are so many type of meals that make this festival be
a typical one: sticky rice cake, onion pickles, spring rolls, chicken and those confectionaries such as
jams, lotus seed, sweet, cake and so on. women begin to clean their houses, especially the kitchen. The
atmosphere of this occasion is coming and people are animated to welcome springtime.
On the last day of the year, preparation is completed. Families have dinner when they can gather
together and review all the things. on the new year eve at midnight, everyone performs ritual offerings
to the ancestors. and on the first day of Tet children are recieved a red envelope containing money from
the elders, called lucky money. families often warmly greet the first one entering their house. this act is
called First foot, which is one of the most important rituals during festival.
There are many activities to welcome new spring on this occasion. Children usually take up
pens to write their first essay, hoping for good results in school. People visit relatives, friends and give
them many wishes. this can be a lucky, healthy or happy wish such as: “wish you a happy new year”, “
wish you in peace and good health” and so on. People often go to pagodas to show Buddha their hearts
and wish their families good things and power to avoid bad lucks. traditionally but strictly, the first day
of Tet is reserved for family, the second day is for relatives and the third day is for friends and teachers,
who are commonly respected in VN. these others day, VNese are delighted to enjoy exciting games
such as buffalo fight, cock fight,... when the festival ends, people return their works, studies.
Lunar New Year is the most meaningful festival for VNese. it is a wonderful occasion for
family reunion, for festivals, and for people to give their love to their loved one, and worship their
ancestors.
