CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
1.1 Definitions of innovation
The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates
value or for which customers will pay. To be an innovation, an idea must be replicable at
an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need.
Innovation involves deliberate application of information, imagination and initiative
in deriving greater or different values from resources, and includes all processes by which
new ideas are generated and converted into useful products.

1.3 Difference between Invention and Innovation
1.3.1 Definition
* Invention
3
The term ‘invention’, is defined as the act of creating, designing or discovering a
device, method, process, that has not existed before. It can be a new process of producing
a product or may be an improvement upon a product or a new product.
Inventions can be patented, as it provides security to the inventor, for intellectual
property rights, and also identifies it as an actual invention. Further, different countries
have different rules for obtaining the patent and the process is also costly.
To be patented, the invention must be novel, have value and non-obvious.
* Innovation
The word ‘innovation’ itself signifies its meaning, as the transformation of an idea
into reality. In the purest sense, innovation can be described as a change that adds value to
the products or services; that fulfills the needs of the customers.
Innovation can be an introduction or development of new product, process,
technology, service or improving/redesigning the existing ones that provide solutions to
the current market requirements.
1.3.2 Key Differences Between Invention and Innovation
The significant differences between invention and innovation are classified below:
1. The occurrence of an idea for a product or process that has never been made before
is called the invention. The implementation of the idea for product or process for
the very first time is called innovation.
2. The invention is related to the creation of new product. On the other hand,
innovation means adding value or making a change in the existing product.
3. The invention is coming up with a fresh idea and how it works in theory. As
opposed to innovation, is all about practical implementation of the new idea.
4. The invention requires scientific skills. Unlike innovation, which requires a broad
set of marketing, technical and strategic skills.
4
5. The invention occurs when a new idea strikes a scientist. Conversely, innovation
arises when a need realized for a new product or improvisation in the existing
product.
6. The invention is concerned with a single product or process. As against this,
innovation focuses on the combination of various products and services.
7. While the invention is limited to research and development department of the
organization. Innovation is spread all over the organization.
1.4 Difference Between Creativity and Innovation
1.4.1 Definition
* Innovation
Innovation is an act of application of new ideas to which creates some value for the
business organization, government, and society as well. Better and smarter way of doing
anything is innovation. It could be the introduction of: New technology, new product line
or segment, new method of production, an improvement in the existing product.
*Creativity
Creativity is the characteristic of a person to generate new ideas, alternatives,
solutions, and possibilities in a unique and different way.
Creativity is the ability to conceive something unpredictable, original and unique. It
must be expressive, exciting and imaginative. It is the mirror of how beautifully a person
can think in any given circumstance.
Creativity is a brainstorming and mind-blogging activity in which a person has to
think beyond his imagination for bringing something worthwhile. It is an activity of
unveiling something which was previously hidden.
1.4.2 Key Differences Between Creativity and Innovation
The following are the major differences between Creativity and Innovation:
5
1. The quality of thinking new ideas and putting them into reality is creativity. The
act of executing the creative ideas into practice is innovation.
2. Creativity is an imaginative process as opposed to innovation is a productive
process.
3. Creativity can never be measured, but Innovation can be measured.
4. Creativity is related to the generation of ideas which are new and unique.
Conversely, Innovation is related to introduce something better into the market.
5. Creativity does not require money. On the other hand, innovation requires money.
6. There is no risk involved in creativity, whereas the risk is always attached to
innovation.

ENGLISH ARTICLE

The World’s most extraordinary homes
Piers Taylor and Caroline Quentin travel to Japan, a country who combines
innovation with traditional design. And with land at a premium here, small is definitely
beautiful. House one is in Izura, on the coast, two hours east of Tokyo. The owner
Hiroshi, a fisherman, lost everything in the earthquake of 2011. His new family home,
high on a hillside, is nothing like a fisherman's hut. It is a beautiful V-shaped building
entirely made of wood with a dramatic design that echos the trees around it. The house is
held high in the air by three large pillars of splayed wooden struts that could flex to
withstand an earthquake.
Next stop is Jikka House in Izukogen. Old friends Nobuko and Sachiko wanted to
create a retirement home for themselves and a cafe for the local community. Nobuko's
son, an architect, came up with five linked tepee-like structures, clad in hundreds of
curved pieces of cedar. Set in woodland and full of quirky decor, Caroline describes Jikka
as a 'fairy-tale' home.
In Japan nine out of ten people live in the city, so Piers and Caroline go to Hiroshima
to see Optical Glass House. Built beside a busy main road, this unusual home is a
peaceful sanctuary. Inside, architect Hiroshi Nakamura designed a giant 13-tonne wall of
optical glass and behind this 'crystal curtain' a beautiful internal garden with trees
stretching up to the sky. Changing light and the shadows of silent passing vehicles add to
the magic of this oasis. For Piers this house is 'a shrine to beauty and silence.'
7
The final property, 'Glass House for a Diver', is on the coast at Etajima. Owner Mr
Haragami gave his architect free rein to design a stunning coastal house. The result is an
all-glass building inspired by the chambers of an ants' nest. But the real twist is the choice
of rough concrete blocks that surround this delicate home - beauty hidden within a brutal
exterior. It is a challenging, glamorous house with spectacular views of the sea from every
angle.

2.3 Lessons from this article
"If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants" said Isaac
Newton. This quote is from a letter written to fellow scientist, Robert Hooke in February
1675. The phrase is understood to mean that if Newton had been able to discover more
about the universe than others, then it was because he was working in the light of
discoveries made by fellow scientists, either in his own time or earlier. In that article, we
also see the same. Japanese constructed their building by combining between modernity
and tradition. In the other words, based on the previous studies, they learn and create the
better things. In the age of globalization, as the world becomes more and more "flat," the
latter has the advantage of advancing faster, if it is able to acquire and successfully use the
vast resources of science and technology, finance in the world. However, choosing from
what, how to succeed depends entirely on the degree of the wisdom of the choice.
9
Another way is to choose the right direction, creative to be able to stand on the shoulders
of giants.
So do the businesses. Take CEO Group for example. With the ability to invest in large
real estate projects but President of CEO Group think that there is no faster way to make
breakthrough and create products meeting the needs of the customer like standing on the
giant's shoulders. Therefore, CEO Group has found and co-operated with leading
designers and operators in the world to develop real estate projects invested in Phu Quoc.
They have been very selective in choosing suitable partners to improve business
efficiency for each project. With Novotel Phu Quoc Resort and Novotel Villas, Accor is
selected because of its French-inspired brand that has a strong appeal to Europeans. While
luxury apartments and resorts Best Western Premier Sonasea Phu Quoc are associated
with the Best Western brand, a management group of the United States. It has helped
diversify the customer, attract and satisfy them.
The second lesson we have learned: one of the most lasting tendency in business is
“back-to-nature”. Like using woods to build the house, designing the internal garden with
trees stretching up to the sky or constructing like the chambers of an ants' nest. In
cosmetic industry, technology and innovation are the keywords for the beauty
compartment.
As long as consumers are concerned with the impact of pollution and a more stressful
lifestyle, they look for innovative skincare solutions with a link to the natural soul of
formulations. Ingredients are therefore merged from other science fields to integrate into
formulas hyper-technological active ingredients.
Two philosophies play the important roles in the success of innovation, and also in
running a business.

PART 3
THE VIDEO CLIP “BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION - THE
SECRET BEHIND AMAZON, SPOTIFY AND TINDER
SUCCESS”
3.1 Video transcript
Why is Amazon such a successful company? How come Tinder disrupted the
overcrowded online dating market and how did Spotify manage to make people pay for
music again? Well, let me give you some quick answers here in the promo video so you
understand what this course is all about. Since the beginning, Amazon based its whole
innovation strategy on constantly disrupting the sales and delivery channels which are just
one part of a business model of a company. They started by disrupting channels for the
book's market. Instead of going to a library to buy and pick up your physical books you
would order them online and get them delivered by post directly to your home. That was
channel innovation and Amazon kept doing this ever since by selling more and more
products online. When they created the Kindle it became yet in use sales and delivery
channel for books. You can both buy and receive books on your Kindle. And now Amazon
is experimenting with drone delivery which is yet another delivery channel and they also
introduce the echo device with Alexa and the dash buttons which are both new sales
channels. So instead of going on Amazon.com to order something you can now tell Alexa
to do it or press your dash button. So both these devices are innovated sales channels. As
you can see, Amazon is mainly innovating in one single area of the business model which
is the sales and delivery channels. Spotify is doing the same but in another area of the
business model which is the revenue models.
If we go back to the CD era you needed to pay a big sum of money for a whole album
even if you only liked a few songs on it. Then Apple came with iTunes and disrupted this
market by allowing people to pay for each song individually. That was the first massive
11
revenue model innovation in the music industry, but illegal downloading was still a big
problem and music revenues were going down. Eventually, Spotify came and proposed a
streaming model where you could listen to music for free but with advertising and the ad
revenue was distributed among artists. So this was once again a revenue model innovation
for the music industry. More and more people downloaded the app, but still it didn't make
enough money for the artists. That's why Spotify later introduced a paid version of its app
without advertising and with better features. So the whole revenue model became what
we call a freemium one. That's when you have both free and paying users and Spotify
managed to reach a stunning 25 percent conversion rate. It seems that finally the music
industry has reached the right pricing and revenue model. So the success of Spotify is
largely based on its disruptive revenue model in the music industry and once again this is
just one block of their business model. And finally tinder dramatically disrupted the
overcrowded online dating industry by innovating on design. Yes, just the design of their
app and service.
Instead of feeling a complex form on an online dating Web site about your body
measurements: eye color, income, interests, etc… to be somehow matched with the
person that corresponds to you. Tinder went all the way back to the roots which is the
looks of a person. Look at a picture. Do you feel attracted to the person you see? Yes?
No? Then swipe right or swipe left. Super easy. And as long as the other person didn't
swipe back at you, you can't contact them. So girls can't be harassed any more and don't
need to filter through dozens of guys writing them and so they are more willing to use the
service. All of this is design innovation both the visual design of the app but also the
design of the service, how it works compared to the competitors and design. It's right here
the value proposition of the business model. Another company which is successful thanks
to design mainly is uber but I'll stop here for now. There are many other areas of the
business model where companies innovate.
Some become successful by innovating on their target customer, others by disrupting
the customer relationships and their marketing strategies. Yet others do it by optimizing
their processes and costs and become much more efficient than most of their competitors.
12
So this course is about disruptive innovation. If all what I said sounds interesting to you
then go ahead and check out the free previous of these course especially the introduction
to know more details. What we're going to cover it if you are interested in business
innovation and technology. I guarantee that you will love this course.
3.2 Summary
This video is about the secret behind Amazon, Spotify and Tinder success. It showed
you the reason why Amazon became such a successful company, the way Tinder disrupted
the overcrowded online dating market and how Spotify managed to make people pay for
music again. As you can see, Amazon is mainly innovating in one single area of the
business model which is the sales and delivery channels. They created the Kindle, they
are experimenting with drone delivery and they also introduce the echo device. Spotify is
doing the same but in another area of the business model which is the revenue models.
They’ve moved from pay-for-song model to free-with-ads one and finally introduced the
freemium one which is the paid version of its app without advertising and with better
features.
3.3 Lessons from this video clip
This video is about disruptive innovation. Some become successful by innovating on
their target customer, others by disrupting the customer relationships and their marketing
strategies. Others do it by optimizing their processes and costs and become much more
efficient than most of their competitors. Business Model Innovation is indeed a key to
most of the companies’ success. When a company has an innovative culture, it'll grow
easily, despite the fact that the creative process isn't always simple. Tried-and-tested
methods may be reliable, but trying out new things is a worthwhile experiment.
Through this video, we suggest some tips to use innovation to grow your business.
* Approaches to innovation
Analyse the marketplace
13
There's no point considering innovation in a vacuum. To move your business forward,
study your marketplace and understand how innovation can add value to your customers.
Identify opportunities for innovation
You can identify opportunities for innovation by adapting your product or service to
the way your marketplace is changing.
For example, if you're a specialist hamburger manufacturer, you might consider
lowering the fat content in your burgers to appeal to the health-conscious consumer.
You could also innovate by introducing new technology, techniques or working
practices - perhaps using better processes to give a more consistent quality of product.
If research shows people have less time to go to the stores, you could overhaul your
distribution processes, offering customers a home-delivery service, possibly tied in with
online and telephone ordering.
* Planning innovation
Some innovative ideas may just come to you out of the blue. However, you should
have:
-
Innovation as part of your business strategy
A strategic vision of how you want your business to develop - if you dedicate your
time to monitoring trends in your business sector, you can then focus your
innovative efforts on the most important areas.
Innovation will not only improve the chances of your business surviving, but also
help it to thrive and drive increased profits. There are lots of practical ways of assessing
whether your ideas have profit potential:
Assess the competition
Find out who your competitors are and where they operate. Use the Internet and
advertising sources to find out about their products, prices and operating culture. This can
14
give you an overview of their selling points, as well as any areas you might be able to
exploit.
Study market or industry trends
Awareness of the climate in which your business is operating will help you to plan.
You can find a lot of information about your industry on the Internet. Business and
trade magazines will also feature useful articles.
Build a relationship with your customers
It's not enough simply to know who your customer base is. You need to communicate
effectively with them as well.
Communication involves not only listening to their needs but also actively observing
their behaviour around current products and services and generating ideas on how you can
make improvements.
Involve your suppliers and other business partners
Pooling your resources with your suppliers or other business partners will help to
produce and develop creative ideas. Potential partnerships can also be developed through
business networking opportunities.
Next, consider what taking a particular innovative step could mean for your business.
Ask yourself:
-
What impact it will have on your business processes and practices
What extra training your staff may require
What extra resources you may need
How you'll finance the work
Whether you'll be creating any intellectual property that will need protecting
Finally, you should include your vision in your business plan by:
-
Putting down your goals, both long and short term and detailing how you intend to
achieve them
15
-
Linking goals to financial targets, such as achieving a specific turnover by a set
-
date
Reviewing your plan regularly
* Encourage innovation in your business
There are many sources you can use to help generate new ideas for the business.
Suppliers, business partners and business network contacts can all make valuable
contributions to the creative process, as well as providing support and encouragement.
Your employees are also a vital asset in generating innovative ideas.
To get the most from them, you need to create an innovative environment and
encourage creative thinking.
Steps to promote innovation:
-
Make sure you have processes and events to capture ideas. For example, you could
set up suggestion boxes around the workplace or hold regular workshops to
-
brainstorm ideas.
Create a supportive atmosphere in which people feel free to express their ideas
-
without the risk of criticism or ridicule.
Encourage risk taking and experimentation - don't penalise people who try new
-
ideas that fail.
Promote openness between individuals and teams. Good ideas and knowledge in
one part of your business should be shared with others. Teamwork, newsletters and
-
intranets can all help your people share information and encourage innovation.
Stress that people at all levels of the business share responsibility for innovation,
so everybody feels involved in taking the business forward. The fewer the layers of
management or decision making in your organisation, the more people feel their
-
ideas matter.
Reward innovation and celebrate success. Appropriate incentives can play a
significant role in encouraging staff to think creatively.
16
-
Look for imagination and creativity when recruiting new employees. Remember
that innovative thinkers aren't always those with the most impressive list of
qualifications.
