II. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Sociologists study society and how it is organized. They study what a society
believes and how it is changing. They explain how people behave, but not how they ought
to behave.
Almost every society is based on the family. Some societies have nuclear families. In
the
nuclear family the parents and children live together in one house. Other societies have
extended families. In this kind of family there are grandparents, parents, children, uncles,
and other relatives all living together. In some societies, there are tribes. A tribe is a group of
extended families that have the same ancestors. In North and South America, the members
of each Indian tribe speak the same language. Each tribe in Africa has its own language too.
9

PCP

In Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf countries, the tribes all speak Arabic. Sometimes the
power of the extended family or the tribe is based on the land that it owns.
Everybody in a family knows how to behave as a family member. Children learn how
to act like grown-ups by watching the adults in their family. They learn how a father or
mother should behave. Everyone knows what the correct behavior is, and relatives like to
talk about this. “Is Kumiko acting the way a mother should act?” “Does Abdullah behave in
the right way for a husband?”
It is hard to look at research about the family with our minds instead of our feelings.
Each
Person is part of a family and a society and knows what a family should be like. It is hard to

realize that one kind of family can fit a society very well, even if it is very different from the
family in our society.

A. how a society is organized
B. how people should behave

D. how a society is changing

A. a group of extended families with the same ancestors
B. a group of extended families in the same village
C. a group of extended families that have different ancestors
D. a group of nuclear families that have the same ancestors
3. It can be inferred from the passage that children learn how to act correctly from all of the
followings EXEPT _______.
A. their father
B. their mother
C. their younger siblings
D. their
grandparents
4. The word “they” in paragraph 3 refers to _______.
A. grown-ups
B. families
C. children
D. parents
5. Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the passage?
A. Land does not play an important role in an extended family or a tribe.
B. There are often more generations in a nuclear family than in an extended family.
C. It is difficult to realize that one kind of family can fit a society very well.

Music therapy is using music to help people with a variety of problems. For example,
it can help people with communication and speech problems speak better. It can help people
with memory problems remember things from their past. Music therapy can also help
people manage stress and be more relaxed. It can even make people with bad pain feel
better.
In music therapy, a music therapist works with one person alone or with small
groups. The therapist meets with the person and does tests to find out what the problem is
and what the person can do with music. Then the therapist decides what kind of music
therapy to use. Some people sing, and others might compose music, but a person doesn't
need to know about music to be helped by music therapy. There are options such as listening
to music and dancing to music. Research shows that these activities are good for the body
and for the mind.
Homes that take care of elderly people often have music therapy programs. The
programs help the elderly be more energetic and also help with memory problems. Some
hospitals have music therapy for patients who are in a lot of pain. Music can affect a part of
the brain that reduces pain.
Trevor Gibbons is one example of a person who was helped by music therapy. In
2000, he was putting in windows on the fourth floor of a building when he fell. Trevor says
that music also helped him manage loneliness, sadness, and pain after he was hurt. Music
and the music therapist inspired him, and he has written and sung many songs. He has even
recorded CDs and performed at Lincoln Center in New York.
