Objectives
The goal is to provide instructions on how to install the 8600 Smart Routers hardware up to the
point when the network element is ready to be powered up. Guidance is provided on mechanical

a Nationally recognized Authority such as The Food and Drug administration's 21CFR1040
Laser Energy Source, UL 60950-1 Information Technology equipment and European norms
EN60950-1, EN60825-1 and EN60825-2. Failure to use laser transceivers which meet these
standards could result in eye damage to users or service personnel working around the
equipment.

WARNING: Keep away from moving fan blades during operation. The fan propeller will also
continue rotating momentarily after extraction. Be careful not to touch the propeller before
rotation has stopped.

the power switch (if any), then detach the power cable and only after these actions, remove
the power module or CDC. Never keep the power cable connected to the power module or
CDC while it is out of its slot. Otherwise the power module or CDC may cause bodily injury or
damage to the part that it is touching.

1 Overview

1 Overview
This section describes the tasks typically required to install a 8600 Smart Routers. Begin the
installation process as soon as the site preparation is complete and all system components have
been unpacked and inspected.
It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the 8600 Smart Routers concept, telecommunications
cabling electronic circuitry and wiring practice basics to use this guide. This document should be
used together with the 8600 Smart Routers Reference Manuals where 8600 Smart Routers hardware

is documented in detail.
It is recommended to have at least two persons installing the network elements in the rack or cabinet.
8600 Smart Routers must be installed in a location which is accessible only to service personnel or
specially trained users (restricted access location as defined in [IEC 60950-1]). It must be ensured
that unauthorized persons cannot access the installation.
It is advisable to retain the packaging in which a module or component was shipped. You can
possibly use it e.g. for storing the item in the future.
The following list describes the overall installation sequence of the 8600 Smart Routers network
elements:
• planning of the installation
• unpack and inspect all system components
• cooling
• mechanical assembly of network elements
• grounding
• power installation

• verifying the installation
• initial configuration using CLI

Site Survey
The site survey included in this manual as an Appendix will help in planning the installation,
see Appendix: Site Survey.
Make sure that the site survey is carried out according to the instructions. Ensure that there is
sufficient power feeding capability with sufficient battery back-up; consider work safety and ESD
protection, Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of all installed equipment, cooling of equipment,
rack, cabinet as well as the installation site.
