Using Let’s Go 1 Tests and Quizzes
1. Introduction
1.1 Let’s Go 1 Tests and Quizzes has been designed to facilitate the testing of students using the Let’s Go 3rd
Edition series. As you and your students work your
way through the units, the writing quizzes as well as
the writing and listening tests included in this book
may be given to ensure students have absorbed and
mastered the materials presented in the Let’s Go 3rd
Edition Level 1 Student Book, Skills Book and Work
Book. These tests will also help you fairly and objectively evaluate and grade your students.
1.2 The tests are objective, easy to administer and
match the language and skills objectives for Level
1 of the Let’s Go 3rd Edition series. Each test type,
and the question components that make up each
type, are explained below. Look for the i symbol
for suggestions on time limits and administering as
well as marking/grading the quizzes and tests.
1.3 We hope you enjoy using these tests and find them
a useful teaching tool for your young learners!
2. Quiz and Test Types
2.1 There are six different types of Let’s Go 1 Tests and
Quizzes:
• Lesson Quizzes
• Unit Tests
• Let’s Learn About Quizzes
• Review Tests
• Midterm Test
• Final Test
2.2 Lesson Quizzes
The Let’s Go 3rd Edition Level 1 Student Book consists
of eight main units (plus four review units). Each main
unit is broken down into four sections:
• Let’s Start
• Let’s Learn
• Let’s Learn More
• Let’s Build
Lesson Quizzes are one page each and have been designed to match the content of each of the unit sections,
such as Lesson Quiz 1.1 Let’s Start, Lesson Quiz 1.2 Let’s
Learn, etc. There are 32 Lesson Quizzes in total.
i The Lesson Quizzes are written and can be completed in approximately 10 minutes (more advanced students may require less time). A Lesson
Quiz could easily be administered at the beginning
of class as a form of review for the previous lesson
or warm-up for the lesson that is about to begin.
Each Lesson Quiz consists of two parts, A and B.
The exact number of answers in each part varies
slightly for each Lesson Quiz and falls into the
range of three to seven answers per part. For grading purposes, one or two points could be awarded
for each answer.
2.3 Unit Tests
Unit Tests are each two pages long and have been designed to match the content of a complete unit, covering
all four lessons (Let’s Start, Let’s Learn, Let’s Learn More,
and Let’s Build). There are eight Unit Tests in total.
i The Unit Tests have both written and listening
questions and can be completed in approximately
20 minutes (more advanced students may require
less time). As with Lesson Quizzes, a Unit Test
could be administered at the beginning of class as
a form of review for the previous unit. Each Unit
Test consists of four parts, A, B, C, and D. The exact
number of answers in each part varies slightly for
each Unit Test and falls into the range of three to
seven answers per part. For grading purposes, one
or two points could be awarded for each answer.
2.4 Let’s Learn About Quizzes
Let’s Learn About Quizzes are each one page long and
have been designed to match the content of the Let’s
Learn About page at the end of Units 2, 4, 6 and 8.
There are four Let’s Learn About Quizzes in total.
i Let’s Learn About Quizzes have both written and listening questions and can be completed in approximately 10 minutes (more advanced students may
require less time). As with Lesson Quizzes and Unit
Tests, a Let’s Learn About Quiz could be administered at the beginning of class immediately following the Let’s Learn About lesson. It can also act as a
good warm-up for the next unit as some of the concepts taught in the Let’s Learn About lesson are recycled in the following units. Each Let’s Learn About
Quiz consists of two parts, A and B. Part A has four

answers and part B has six answers for a total of 10
answers per quiz. For grading purposes, one or two
points could be awarded for each answer.
2.5 Review Tests
Review Tests are each two pages long and have been
designed to match the content of two complete units.
Review Test 1 covers Units 1 and 2, Review Test 2 covers Units 3 and 4, Review Test 3 covers Units 5 and 6
and Review Test 4 covers Units 7 and 8. There are four
Review Tests in total.
i Review Tests have both written and listening questions and can be completed in approximately 20
minutes (more advanced students may require less
time). Review Tests could be administered as part of
a formal review for the previous two units. Each Review Test consists of four parts, A, B, C, and D. The
exact number of answers in each part varies slightly
for each Unit Test and falls into the range of four to
10 answers per part. For grading purposes, one or
two points could be awarded for each answer.
2.6 Midterm Test
The Midterm Test is four pages long and has been designed to match the content of Units 1 to 4. There is
only one Midterm Test.
i The Midterm Test has both written and listening
questions and can be completed in approximately
30 to 45 minutes (more advanced students may require less time). The Midterm Test should be administered as part of a formal review for Units 1 to
4. The Midterm Test consists of eight parts, A, B, C,
D, E, F, G, and H. The exact number of answers in
each part varies for a total of 43 answers. For grading purposes, one or two points could be awarded
for each answer.
2.7 Final Test
The Final Test is six pages and has been designed to
match the content of Units 1 to 8, providing a comprehensive test for all of Level 1. There is only one Final
Test.
i The Final Test has both written and listening questions and can be completed in approximately 45 to
60 minutes (more advanced students may require
less time). The Final Test should be administered as
part of a formal review for all of Level 1. The Final
Test consists of 10 parts, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and
J. The exact number of answers in each part varies
for a total of 99 answers. For grading purposes, one
or two points could be awarded for each answer.
3. Question Types
There are four main types of questions in Let’s Go 1
Tests and Quizzes:
3.1 Writing Questions
Writing Questions ask students to fill in a blank from a
series of given options or from memory. When marking
writing answers, look for correct grammar and punctuation. There are five styles of Writing Questions:
• Choose and write: students fill in the blanks from
a series of given options.
• Write: students fill in the blanks from memory.
• Read and write: students read the question then
fill in the blanks from memory.
• Unscramble and write: students unscramble a
mixed-up word or sentence then write it in the
blank.
• Draw: students draw an item that matches the
given vocabulary/sentence.
3.2 Matching Questions
Matching Questions ask students to connect an image with a word or phrase or to connect two phrases.
Matching Questions also ask students to check or circle
the correct answer. The emphasis on these questions is
the student’s ability to read and understand information. There are four styles of Matching Questions:
• Connect: students connect an image with a word
or phrase.
• Read and circle: students circle the correct answer
from two or three options.
• Read and check: students check the correct answer from two options.
• Read and match: students connect two phrases,
usually in a question and answer format.
3.3 Listening Questions
(The Audio for the Listening Questions can be found
on the Let’s Go website at www.oup.com/elt/letsgo/).
Listening Questions ask students to listen to a tape
script and then select the correct answer from multiple
choices or to listen to a series of phrases and then number the sequence. The tape scripts for these questions
are presented at natural speed. There are two styles of
Listening Questions:
• Listen and check: students listen to a tape script
and then select the correct answer from multiple
choices.
• Listen and number: students listen to a series of
phrases and then number the sequence.

3.4 Combination Questions
Combination Questions ask students to do two or
three different things and test multiple skills at the
same time. Some lower-level students may need extra
guidance with these questions. There are five styles of
Combination Questions:
• Unscramble, write, and connect: students unscramble a mixed-up word, write it in the blank,
and then connect it with the correct image.
• Read, circle, and write: students read the question, circle the correct option, and then write the
answer from memory.
• Read, match, and check: students read the question, match it to the correct image, and then check
the correct answer.
• Read, choose, and write: students read the question and then fill in the blank from a series of given options.
• Listen, choose, and write: students listen to a
tape script and then fill in the blank from a series
of given options.
4. Answer Keys and Tape Scripts
4.1 Answer Keys and Tape Scripts are provided for all
quizzes and tests.
4.2 Every question has a corresponding answer in the
key, with the exception of Draw questions. A brief explanation of how to read the Answer Key is provided
at the top of each Answer Key and Tape Script page.
Special notes and suggestions are presented throughout the Answer Key and Tape Script pages where
relevant. It is recommended that teachers review
the Answer Key and Tape Script before administering any of the quizzes or tests in order to familiarize themselves with the questions and anticipate any
challenges students may have with the materials.
5.2 Every listening question has a corresponding audio clip which can be found on the Let’s Go website at www.oup.com/elt/letsgo/. There are 25
audio clips in total, each clearly marked in the Answer Key beside the corresponding Tape Script.
Please remember to cue up the correct audio clip
in preparation for administering any tests or quizzes. Promotional CDs containing this material may
also be available in some countries. Please contact
your local Oxford University Press office for more
information.
5.3 If you do not have access to the Let’s Go 3rd Edition
Level 1 audio material, you can still administer the
listening portion of the tests or quizzes. Here are
some suggestions:
• Read the Tape Script out loud to your students.
If possible, use a native-English speaker’s natural
pace, intonation and pronunciation and read the
Tape Script only once.
• Have another teacher read the Tape Script out
loud. This gets your students used to listening
to different people speaking English. Remind the
other teacher to use a native-English speaker’s
natural pace, intonation and pronunciation and
read the Tape Script only once.
• Pre-tape the Tape Script. You can tape yourself or
someone else reading the Tape Script(s). Remember to use a native-English speaker’s natural pace,
intonation and pronunciation and read the Tape
Script only once.
5.4 Listening Questions are an important part of a comprehensive evaluation of how well your students
are mastering the materials they are being taught.
Therefore, it is highly recommended that you do
not skip the listening portions, or any other components, of Let’s Go 1 Tests and Quizzes.
