While many nineteenth–century reformers hoped to bring about reform through education or by
eliminating specific social evils, some thinkers wanted to start over and remark society by founding
ideal, cooperative communities. The United States seemed to them a spacious and unencumbered
country where models of a perfect society could succeed. These communitarian thinkers hoped their
success would lead to imitation, until communities free of crime, poverty, and other social ills would
cover the land. A number of religious groups, notably the Shakers, practiced communal living, but the
main impetus to found model communities came from nonreligious, rationalistic thinkers.
Among the communitarian philosophers, three of the most influential were Robert Owen,
Charles Fourier, and John Humphrey Noyes. Owen, famous for his humanitarian policies as owner of
several thriving textile mills in Scotland, believed that faulty environment was to blame for human
problems and that these problems could be eliminated in a rationally planned society. In 1825, he put
his principles into practice at New Harmony, Indiana. The community failed economically after a few
years but not before achieving a number of social successes. Fourier, a commercial employee in France,
never visited the United States. However, his theories of cooperative living influenced many American
through the writings of Albert Brisbane, whose Social Destiny of Man explained Fourierism and its
self-sufficient associations or “phalanxes‖. One or more of these phalanxes was organized in very
Northern state. The most famous were Red Bank, New Jersey, and Brook Farm, Massachusetts. An

early member of the latter was the author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Noyes founded the most enduring and
probably the oddest of the utopian communities, the Oneida Community of upstate New York. Needless
to say, none of these experiments had any lasting effects on the patterns of American society.

III. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (10 points).
The olympic games
In ancient Greece athletic festivals were very important and had strong religious association. The
Olympian athletic festival, held every four years in honor of Zeus, eventually lost its local character,

became first a national event, and then, after the rules against foreign competitors had been waived,
international. No one knows exactly how far back the Olympic Games go, but some official records date
from 776 B.C.
The Games took place in August on the plain by Mount Olympus. Many thousands of spectators
gathered from all parts of Greece, but no married woman was admitted even as spectator. Slaves,
women and dishonored persons were not allowed to compete. The exactly sequence of events is
uncertain, but events included boy‘s gymnastics, horse – racing, field events such as discus and javelin
throwing, and the very important foot race. There was also boxing and wrestling and special tests of
varied ability such as the pentathlon, the winner of which excelled in running, jumping, discus and
javelin throwing and wrestling. The evening of the third day was devoted to sacrificial offering to the
heroes of the day, and the fourth day, that of the full moon, was set aside as a holy day.
On the sixth and last day, all the victors were crowned with holy garlands of wild olive from a
sacred wood. So great was the honor that the winner of the foot race gave his name to the year of his
victory. Although Olympic winners received no prize money, they were, in fact, richly awarded by the
state authorities. The public honor also made the strict discipline of the tenth–month training period
worthwhile. In spite of the lengthy training, however, runners were known to drop dead from strain at
the winning post. How their results compared with modern standards, we unfortunately have no means
of telling.
After an uninterrupted history of almost 1,200 years, the Games were abolished in A.D. 394, the
Christian era, because of their pagan origin. It was over 1,500 years before there was another such
international athletics gathering. The Greek institution was revived in 1896 and the first small meeting
took place in Athens (Greece). After the 1908 London Olympics, success was re–established and nations
sent their best representatives. In times of peace, the Games have taken place ever since at four–yearly
intervals. In Atlanta (America) in 1996, competitors from more than 190 countries were watched by
huge crowds.
Nowadays, the Games are held in different countries in turn. The host country provides vast
facilities, including a stadium, swimming pools and living accommodation, but competing countries pay
their own athlete‘s expenses, Athletic contests are still the main feature, but now many more sports are
represented, women compete, the ancient pentathlon, for example, has been modified into a more
comprehensive test, and the marathon races, initiated in 1896, are now a celebrated event.

The Olympics start with the arrival in the stadium of a torch, lighted on Mount Olympus by the
sun‘s ray. It is carried by a succession of runners to the stadium. The torch symbolizes the continuation
of the ancient Greek athletic ideals, and it burns throughout the Games until the closing ceremony. The
well–known Olympic flag, however, is a modern conception: the five interlocking rings symbolize the
uniting of all five continents participating in the Games.

Question IX: Read the passage carefully and then choose the best answer to each sentence by circling
A, B, C or D
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct or
have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast
number, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct.
What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost
entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in
personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is contributing to the problem of
extinction. Animals, such as the Bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of
the world ‘ s ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their
survival-and the survival of our planet. Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem
in various ways. Some countries, in an effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts
of land to animal reserves. They then charge admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the
parks, and they often must also depend on world organizations for support. This money enables them to
invest in equipment and patrols to protect the animals. Another response to the increase in animal
extinction is an international boycott of products made from endangered species. This has had some

effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals from being hunted and killed.

Why does English spelling have a reputation for being difficult? English was first written down when
Christian monks came to England in Anglo-Saxon (1)………………. They used the 23 letters of Latin

………….range of basic sounds (over 40) than Latin. The alphabet was too small, and so combinations

………….risk. English survived, but the spelling of many English words changed to follow French
(5)…………………., and many French words were introduced into the language. The result was more
irregularity. When the printing press was (6)………………in the fifteenth century, many early printers
of English texts spoke other first languages. They made little effort to respect English spelling. Although
one of the short-term (7) ………… of printing was to produce a number of variant spellings, in the long
term it created fixed spellings. People became used to seeing words spelt in the same way. Rules were
drawn up, and dictionaries were put together which printers and writers could (8)……………… to.
However, spoken English was not fixed and continued to change slowly-just as it still does now. Letters
that were sounded in the Anglo-Saxon period, like the ‗ k ‘ in 'knife', now became (9)……… . Also, the
pronunciation of vowels then had little in common with how they sound now, but the way they are spelt
hasn't changed. No (10)…………, then, that it is often difficult to see the link between sound and
spelling.

II. Read the passage, then choose the correct options. Write your answer in the box. (2,0 points)
The principles of use and disuse states that those parts of organism‘s bodies that are used grow larger.
Those parts are not tending to wither away. It is an observed fact that when you exercise particular
muscles, they grow. Those that are never used diminish. By examining a man‘s body, we can tell which
muscles he uses and which he does not. We may even be able to guess his profession or recreation.
Enthusiasts of body building cult make use of the principles of use and disuse to build their bodies,
almost like a piece of sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in this peculiar
minority culture. Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this way. Walk
barefoot and you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by
looking at their hands alone. The farmer‘s hands are horny hardened by long exposure to rough work.
The teller‘s hands are often soft. The principles of use and disuse enables animals to become better at
the job of surviving in their world, progressively better during their lifetime as the result of living in that
world. Humans, through direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop a skin color which equips
them better to survive in particular local conditions. Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic
sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin cancer. Too little sunlight, on the other hand, leads
to vitamin D deficiency and rickets. The brown pigment melanin which is synthesized under the
influence of sunlight makes a screen to protect the underlying tissues from the harmful effects of further
sunlight. If a suntanned person moves to a less sunlight climate, the melanin disappears, and the body
benefits from what little sun there is. This can be represented as an instance of the principles of use and

disuse: skin goes brown when it is used, and fades to white when it is not.
1. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. How the principles of use and disuse change people‘s concepts of themselves.
B. The way people change themselves to conform to fashion.
C. The changes that occur according to the principles of use and disuse.

If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius , they will cause a disaster.
According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which
ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will

fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious
in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very
supportive of their child. Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help
him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even
drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael‘s mother knows very little about
music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter
music competitions if he is unwilling. Winston Smith, Michael‘s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both
his parents are successful musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son
to be as successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very
unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he
always seems quiet and unhappy.
