Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions below.
FAMILY LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES
Family life in the United States is changing. Fifty or sixty years ago, the wife was called a
“housewife”. She cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. The husband earned the mo ney for the family.
He was usually out working all day. He came home tired in the evening, so he did not do much housework. And
he did not see the children very much, except on weekends.
These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They cannot stay with the children
all day. They, too, come home tired in the evening. They do not want to spend the evening cooking dinner and
cleaning up. They do not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the housework
now? Who is going to take care of the children?
Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife

agree to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always
cooks dinner and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights and the
husband cooks dinner on other nights.
Then there is the question of the children. In the past, many families got help with child care from
grandparents. Now families usually do not live near their relatives. The grandparents are often too far away to
help in a regular way. More often, parents have to pay for child care help. The help may be a babysitter or a
day-care center. The problem with t his kind of help is the high cost. It is possible only for couples with jobs
that pay well.
Parents may get another kind of help form the companies they work for. Many companies now let
people with children work part-time. That way, parents can spend mo re time with their children.
5

Some husbands may even stop working for a while to stay with the children. For these men there is a new
word: they are called “househusbands”. In the USA more and more men are becoming househusbands
every year.
These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn to understand their
children better, and the children can get to know their fathers better. Husbands and wives may also find changes
in their marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions below.
Because writing has become so important in our culture, we sometimes think of it as more real than
speech. A little thought, however, will show w hy speech is primary and writing secondary to language.
Human beings have been writing (as far as we can tell from surviving evidence) for at least 5000 years; but they
have been talking for much longer, doubtless ever since there have been human beings.

When writing did develop, it was derived from and represented speech, although imperfectly.
Even today there are spoken languages that have no written form. Furthermore, we all learn to talk well before
we learn to write; any human child who is not severely handicapped physically or mentally will learn to
talk: a normal human being cannot be prevented from doing so. On the other hand, it takes a special effort to
learn to write. In the past many intelligent and useful members of society did not acquire the skill, and
even today many who speak languages with writing systems never learn to read or write, while some
who learn the rudiments of those skills do so only imperfectly.
To affirm the primacy of speech over writing is not, however, to disparage the latter. One
advantage writing has over speech is that it is more permanent and makes possible the records that any
civilization must have. Thus, if speaking makes us human, writing makes us civilized.

Câu 45: According to the passage, writing ______.
A. is represented perfectly by speech
B. represents speech, but not perfectly
C. developed from imperfect speech
D. is imperfect, but less so than speech
Câu 46: Normal human beings ______.
A. learn to talk after learning to write

B. learn t o write before learning to talk
C. learn to write and to talk at the same time
D. learn to talk before learning to write
Câu 47: Learning to write is ______.
A. easy
B. too difficult
C. not easy

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous
steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has
shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related
9

to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. People of different cultures are more prone to contact certain
illnesses because of the characteristic foods they consume.
That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates
nitrites (commonly used to preserve color in meat) as well as other food additives caused cancer. Yet, these
carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which ingredients

on the packaging label of processed food are helpful or harmful.
The additives that we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to cattle and poultry, and because of
this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows.
Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.
A healthy diet is directly related to good health. Often we are unaware of detrimental substances we
ingest. Sometimes well-meaning farmers or others who do not realize the consequences add these substances to
food without our knowledge.
Question 31: How has science done to disservice to people?
A. As a result of scientific intervention, some potentially harmful substances have been added to our
food

answer to each of the following sentences
Learning means acquiring knowledge or developing the ability to perform new behaviors. It is common
to think of learning as something that takes place in school, but much of human learning
occurs outside the classroom, and people continue to learn throughout their lives.
Even before they enter school, young children learn to walk, to talk, and to use their hands to manipulate
toys, food, and other objects. They use all of their senses to learn about the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells in
their environments. They learn how to interact with their parents, siblings, friends, and other people important
to their world. When they enter school, children learn basic academic subjects such as reading, writing, and
mathematics. They also continue to learn a great deal outside the classroom. They learn which behaviors are
likely to be rewarded and which are likely to be punished. They learn social skills for interacting with other
children. After they finish school, people must learn to adapt to the many major changes that affect their lives,
such as getting married, raising children, and finding and keeping a job.
Because learning continues throughout our lives and affects almost everything we do, the study of
learning is important in many different fields. Teachers need to understand the best ways to educate children.
12

Psychologists, social workers, criminologists, and other human-service workers need to understand how certain
experiences change people’s behaviors. Employers, politicians, and advertisers make use of the principles of
learning to influence the behavior of workers, voters, and consumers.

Learning is closely related to memory, which is the storage of information in the brain. Psychologists
who study memory are interested in how the brain stores knowledge, where this storage takes place, and how
the brain later retrieves knowledge when we need it. In contrast, psychologists who study learning are more
interested in behavior and how behavior changes as a result of a person’s experiences.
There are many forms of learning, ranging from simple to complex. Simple forms of learning involve a
single stimulus. A stimulus is anything perceptible to the senses, such as a sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste. In
a form of learning known as classical conditioning, people learn to associate two stimuli that occur in sequence,
such as lightning followed by thunder. In operant conditioning, people learn by forming an association between
a behavior and its consequences (reward or punishment). People and animals can also learn by observation that is, by watching others perform behaviors. More complex forms of learning include learning languages,
concepts, and motor skills.

United States she was still barred from performing on the American operatic stage. After she was prevented from singing
in Washington’s segregated Constitution Hall in 1939, Eleanor Roosevelt intervened and arranged for Miss Anderson to
perform at the Lincoln Memorial. A crowd of 75,000 people came to watch her sing before the Memorial. Marian

to each of the questions from 34 to 41.
Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk. Gestures are the "silent language" of every culture.
We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body
language of every country or we may be misunderstood. In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in
a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.

Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away
and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close.
They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, "Pardon me." or
"Excuse me." Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you
are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite. For Americans, thumbsup means yes, very good, or well done. Thumbs down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or
above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all
right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger. Americans shake their index finger at children
when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to do is to
smile.

Harvard University, today recognized as part of the top echelon of the world's universities, came from very
inauspicious and humble beginning.
This oldest of American universities was founded in 1636, just sixteen years after the Pilgrims landed at
Plymouth. Included in the Puritan emigrants to the Massachusetts colony during this period were more than 100
graduates of England's prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities, and these universities graduates in the

New Word were determined that their sons would have the same educational opportunities that they themselves
had had. Because of this support in the colony for an institution of higher learning, the General
Court of Massachusetts appropriated 400 pounds for a college in October of 1636 and early the following
year decided on a parcel of land for the school; this land was in an area called Newetowne, which was later
renamed Cambridge after its English cousin and is the site of the present-day university.
When a young minister named John Harvard, who came from the neighboring town of Charlestowne, died
from tuberculosis in 1638, he willed half of his estate of 1,700 pounds to the fledgling college. In spite of the
fact that only half of the bequest was actually paid, the General Court named the college after the minister in
appreciation for what he had done. The amount of the bequest may not have been large, particularly by today's
standard, but it was more than the General Court had found it necessary to appropriate in order to open the
college.
Henry Dunster was appointed the first president of Harvard in 1640, and it should be noted that in addition to
serving as president, he was also the entire faculty, with an entering freshmen class of four students. Although
the staff did expand somewhat, for the first century of its existence the entire teaching staff consisted of the
president and three or four tutors.

In early civilization, citizens were educated informally, usually within the family unit. Education meant
simply learning to live. As civilization became more complex, however, education became more formal,
22

structured, and comprehensive. Initial efforts of the ancient Chinese and Greek societies concentrated solely on
the education of males. The post-Babylonian Jews and Plato were exceptions to this pattern. Plato was
apparently the first significant advocate of the equality of the sexes. Women, in his ideal state, would have the
same rights and duties and the same educational opportunities as men. This aspect of Platonic philosophy,
however, had little or no effect on education for many centuries, and the concept of a liberal education for men
only, which had been espoused by Aristotle, prevailed.
In ancient Rome, the availability of an education was radually extended to women, but they were taught
separately from men. The early Christians and medieval Europeans continued this trend, and single-sex schools
for the privileged through classes prevailed through the Reformation period. Gradually, however, education for
women, in a separate but equal basis to that provided for men, was becoming a clear responsibility of society.
Martin Luther appealed for civil support of schools for all children. Al the Council of Trent in the 16 th century,
the Roman Catholic Church encouraged the establishment of free primary schools for children of all classes.
The concept of universal primary education, regardless of sex, had been born, but it was still in the realm of the
single-sex school.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, co-education became a more widely applied principle of educational
philosophy. In Britain, Germany, and the Soviet Union the education of boys and girls in the same classes

became an accepted practice. Since World War II, Japan and the Scandinavian countries have also adopted
relatively universal co-educational systems. The greatest negative reaction to co-education has been felt in the
teaching systems of the Latin countries, where the sexes have usually been separated at both primary and
secondary levels, according to local conditions.
A number of studies have indicated that girls seem to perform better overall and in science in particular. In
single-sex classes, during the adolescent years, pressure to conform to stereotypical female gender roles may
disadvantage girls in traditionally male subjects, making them reluctant to volunteer for experimental work
while taking part in lessons. In Britain, academic league tables point to high standards achieved in girls’
schools. Some educationalists, therefore, suggest segregation of the sexes as a good thing, particularly in certain
areas, and a number of schools are experimenting with the idea.
