What’s New in Version 5.1?
In version 5.1 of UpdateEXPERT, the focus is on usability and new application support; making it
even easier to maintain your servers and workstations by letting you quickly review the status of a
particular machine or hotfix. Here are some of the improvements you will notice:
Smart Reboot Elimination: Enhances installations by using QCHAIN-like scheduling
functionality. QCHAIN is a Microsoft technology for safely installing multiple hotfixes without
rebooting between each installation.
Enhanced Error Detection/Description: Error conditions and messages have been bulked up to
allow a user to determine the exact issue if a problem ever occurs via detection or scheduling.
Detection Errors Report: Provides a machine based report of updates which were not able to be
detected due to certain circumstances (e.g. No shares available for accessing the file, registry
access denied, etc.). (See Detection Errors Report)
Increased readability for error messages: Errors when viewing deployment statuses are now
more descriptive. For Example, “Time-Expired: The machine might have been turned off or
rebooting at the scheduled time.”
Faster Query Speeds: Increased query speeds for large networks.
Applications added to reports: Application updates are now included in all reports.
Support for multiple applications: Support for the following applications has been included:

About Hotfixes
Microsoft Hotfixes patch the operating system, fixing potential security holes or operational
problems (like a Blue Screen of Death or decreased performance). Instead of releasing a new
operating system, the Windows NT/Win2K architecture allows you to install these hotfixes
solving specific problems.
You do not need to install every hotfix available. In fact, many hotfixes are specific to the
operating system version. Many of the hotfixes available are security related. That is, a
vulnerability has been identified and a patch is required to better secure the machine.
These hotfixes are, for the most part, cumulative. This means that the latest update may include
fixes previously released. For example, the 01/09/98 version of Tcpip.sys (teardrop2-fix) also
includes previous fixes to Tcpip.sys (such as land-fix, icmp-fix, and oob-fix). This is a loose rule
however, and you need to read the Knowledgebase articles carefully for each hotfix.
Installing UpdateEXPERT
Note: In order for UpdateEXPERT to install properly, it must have read/write access to the local
registry. The installation process will check and determine if the logged in user’s privileges are
sufficient. If any of these tests fail, UpdateEXPERT will cancel the install and you will be
requested to log in as an administrator and re-run the installation.
UpdateEXPERT is distributed on CD-ROM or via the Internet. To install UpdateEXPERT on
your NT/Win2K machine, perform the following steps:
1.
Make sure you have the serial number that is printed on the product package.
*
If you are installing this product as a 15-day live trial for evaluation purposes, the serial
number field contains a live trial serial number by default.
*
If you purchased this product, you will need to replace the default live trial serial number
with the serial number you were provided with the product.
2.
Insert the UpdateEXPERT CD into the CD-ROM drive of your Windows NT/Win2K
machine.
3.
Run the install program SETUP.EXE. This can be done in any of the following ways:
*
Click on the Start menu and select Run. In the Run dialog box, enter the path to the
setup program on the CD. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is designated as your D
drive, you would type: d:\setup.exe.
*
Use the Windows Explorer or My Computer to view the contents of the CD. Doubleclick on the file named SETUP (or SETUP.EXE).
This launches the setup program, which presents a set of dialogs that will help you navigate
through the remainder of the installation process. During the installation, the Next and Back
buttons can be used to move through the dialogs if changes need to be made along the way.
8
UpdateEXPERT Users’Manual
4.
A welcome message displays, recommending that you exit all Windows programs before
continuing with the installation. Click the Next button to continue.
5.
Read the Software License Agreement and click the Yes button. (If you do not agree with the
license agreement, UpdateEXPERT will not install.)
6.
Read the Release Notes, which displays the README.TXT file. This file contains important
information as an addendum to the User Manual and On-line Help System. After reviewing
the README.TXT file, click Next to continue.
7.
Enter your name, your company, and the product’s serial number.
Note: The serial number field defaults to a 15-day live trial for evaluation purposes. If you
purchased the product, replace this serial number with the serial number you received with
your purchase. The product serial number must be entered exactly as printed, including the
dashes. If you do not enter a serial number, it defaults to a 15-day live trial. Click the Next
button to continue.
8.
Select the destination location (i.e. directory) where you want UpdateEXPERT to be installed.
The default location is C:\Program Files\St Bernard Software\UpdateEXPERT. To choose a
different location, click on the BROWSE button and select the desired directory, or enter a
new path in the Path field. If you enter a path that does not exist, the install program will
create it for you. Click the Next button to continue.
9.
The Select Program Folder dialog lets you specify the name of the program folder that will
contain the program elements. You access this folder by opening the Start menu and
selecting Programs. You may choose the default name, type a new folder name or select one
from the existing Folders list. Click the Next button to continue.
10. The setup program now has enough information to start copying the program files to your
computer. If you want to review or change any settings, click the Back button. If you are
satisfied with the settings, click the Next button to begin copying files.
11. The program notifies you when all the program files have been copied from the installation
disk (or Internet download). Click the Finish button to complete the installation. The
program group you created for UpdateEXPERT displays, showing the icons for
UpdateEXPERT, UpdateEXPERT Help, and UpdateEXPERT Uninstall.
Note: The setup program also copies the README.TXT file to your UpdateEXPERT
directory. It is highly recommended that you read this file. It contains important information
concerning the operation of UpdateEXPERT.
12. The installation of UpdateEXPERT is complete.
Uninstalling UpdateEXPERT
The UpdateEXPERT program group contains an UpdateEXPERT Uninstall icon. If you need to
remove the UpdateEXPERT program from your system, double-click on this icon.

Running UpdateEXPERT for the First Time
The first time you launch UpdateEXPERT after installing it, the UpdateEXPERT License Status
Wizard automatically runs (unless UpdateEXPERT was installed with a site license). This wizard
guides you through the process of selecting which machines you want UpdateEXPERT to monitor
and maintain in accordance with your license agreement. If you do not want to run this wizard
now, click Cancel. Otherwise, follow the instructions below:
1.
When the Welcome window displays, click the Next button.
2.
In the Choose Machines To Manage window, UpdateEXPERT lists the domains and
workgroups it found on your network. The text beneath this window shows you how many
machines can be managed under your current license agreement. To select machines in a
domain, click the + sign next to the domain name. This displays the list of individual
machines in that domain. Place a check mark next to those machines you want to monitor
with UpdateEXPERT.
Note: As you select machines, the text beneath the window tells you how many additional
machines you can add. If you need to manage more machines than is allowed under your
current license, contact St. Bernard Software for information about upgrading your license.
3.
Click Finish to close the wizard and launch UpdateEXPERT.

UpdateEXPERT Users’Manual
Overview of the UpdateEXPERT User Interface
This section shows you how to navigate in the UpdateEXPERT program.
The Main Program Window
The main UpdateEXPERT view simultaneously displays three separate windowpanes to help you
monitor your network: The Network pane (upper left), the Machine/Update pane (upper right), and
the Browser pane (bottom).
Network Pane
The upper left window shows the domains and the Windows NT/Win2K servers and workstations
that are being monitored by UpdateEXPERT. You can change which machines are displayed using
the Options command in the View menu. Note: Machines displayed in light gray are unmanaged
machines.
11
UpdateEXPERT Users’Manual
Update / Research / Machine Pane
The upper right pane shows either the hotfix view, the research view, or the machine view. When
you have a domain or workgroup highlighted in the Network pane, this pane displays all of the
machines that are part of that workgroup or domain (once they are enumerated).
When you have a specific machine highlighted in the Network pane, this pane displays all of the
available updates for the specific service pack installed on that machine. Status icons let you
instantly see if a particular update has been downloaded, scheduled, successfully installed, or
unsuccessfully installed.
When the View menu’s Research View option is enabled, this pane displays all hotfixes and
service packs in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, regardless of which machine is selected in the
Network pane.
Browser Pane / Report Pane
The bottom pane displays a detailed view of each Hotfix in a web-page interface, just as if you
were browsing the Microsoft support web site. When a hotfix is selected in the Machine/Hotfix
pane, the Microsoft article for that hotfix displays in the browser pane. The article describes all
elements of the hotfix, including the operating systems it applies to, the symptoms that the hotfix
repairs, the cause of the problem and the resolution that fixes it. The article often includes links to
more information about the problem and the hotfix.
When you generate a report in UpdateEXPERT, the Browser pane is replaced by a Report pane,
where the report’s information displays. Reports are generated using the commands in the Report
menu. The types of information included in reports can be customized by selecting Options from
the View menu and editing the Report Options.
When UpdateEXPERT is launched, the first page displayed in the Browser Pane is
UpdateEXPERT’s Users’Page. This page lists valuable information and updates concerning
UpdateEXPERT, along with tips and links to valuable resources for System Administrators.
Using the Network Pane
The Network pane is where UpdateEXPERT lists the domains and the NT 4.0 and Win2K
machines. What is displayed here is based on the options selected from the View Menu. From the
Option Settings dialog box, you can select to display only NT/Win2K server machines,
NT/Win2K domain controllers, NT/Win2K server/workstation machines, machines that are
currently responding, or just those machines managed by UpdateEXPERT.
12
UpdateEXPERT Users’Manual
When you first execute UpdateEXPERT, the program automatically enumerates for all available
domains. Enumeration is the process of locating and counting each domain or machine in the
network. Once the domains are enumerated, then you can select which individual machines you
want to enumerate. To enumerate machines, select the domain to enumerate, right-click on the
domain and select Enumerate domain. An Enumerate dialog will display to let you know that the
program is searching for machines in that domain. To view the machines in the Network pane,
click on the + sign next to the domain name to expand the list.
Note: Enumerating and querying is typically done by default in much the same way as Windows
Explorer. However, to keep network traffic to a minimum, you may wish to manually Enumerate
or Query the network instead of using the automatic background querying. These options can be
accessed from the View menu’s Options command, under the General settings.
Viewing Specific Types of Machines
In some cases, it is advantageous to only enumerate NT/Win2K Servers or NT/Win2K Domain
Controllers. Using the UpdateEXPERT Options function, you can specify which types of
machines to enumerate. Available selections are NT/Win2K servers, NT/Win2K Domain
Controllers and/or NT/Win2K workstations. More than one option can be selected.
1.
From the View menu, select Options. The Option Settings dialog opens.
2.
Select the General option to view the Show Machine Types settings.
3.
In the Show Machine Types group box, select the types of machines you want to enumerate
(i.e. Servers, Domain Controllers, and/or Workstations) by marking the appropriate
checkboxes.
Machine and Network Icons
Each machine enumerated will be displayed with an icon indicating its status or location in the
network hierarchy.

Using the Browser Pane
The Browser pane displays the detailed article information for each hotfix, directly from
Microsoft’s Knowledge Base. This is effectively the same as browsing the Microsoft web site; all
of the hyperlinks are active so you can visit any of the supporting links simply by clicking on
them.
Whenever you click on a hotfix in the Machine/Hotfix pane, the web page for the corresponding
Knowledge Base article opens in the Browser pane, allowing you to view the details of the hotfix.
Note: Although you can download hotfix files directly from the Browser pane, they will not be
registered in UpdateEXPERT software. Always download hotfixes by right-clicking on the hotfix
and selecting the Download command to insure that they are registered in UpdateEXPERT.
You can navigate in the Browser pane using the controls in the Browser Toolbar.
Note: When UpdateEXPERT is launched, the first page displayed in the Browser Pane is
UpdateEXPERT’s Users’Page. This page lists valuable up-to-date information and updates
concerning UpdateEXPERT, along with tips and links to valuable resources for System
Administrators.
