A) Read this love story and work out the meaning of the phrasal verbs in bold. Then
match the phrasal verbs to their definitions:
Sally had been going out with Mike for over a year but they had split up because he had let
her down. Sally considered that sincerity was the most important in a relationship and she had
found out that he had been cheating on her with her best friend. She was feeling really upset
and decided to go to a different high school. Maybe she could get over if she didn’t see them
every day.
Classes started and the first day she took the only free seat next to a guy called Harry. They hit
it off each other immediately. One morning he asked her out during the English lesson. They
decided to meet at a pub in the town centre but he didn’t turn up. Had Harry stood her up?,
she asked to herself. As she was getting angry and bored, she started to chat up with some
guys in the pub. But then someone hugged her tenderly. It was Henry! They made out and the
guys started to clap.
Two months have passed and Harry has really fallen for her. Sally is happy but she still needs
some space. She has been deeply heartbroken once; now she‘s determined: she’s going to get
it right.
