2 teenage boys meet on holiday in Italy
Characters – Andy and Ciro
A - Hello, are you Ciro, the manager’s son?
C - Yes, I am.
A - The receptionist told me to speak to you about taking part in the 5-aside
football competition.
C - That’s right. I’m organising the event.
A - Oh fantastic. I’m here on holiday with my parents and so far I haven’t done
anything or been anywhere because all they want to do is sit by the pool and
read books.
C - What’s your name?
A - Andy
C - Nice to meet you, Andy. How old are you?
A - I’m 16. And you?
C - 17 next week. Have you ever played 5-aside before?
A - Yes, I have played ordinary football since I was 7 years old and 5 a-side
football for about 4 years. I really enjoy 5 a-side, it’s a much faster game, I
think.
C - I agree. Do you mind which position you play?
A - No, as long as I can play I’m happy.
C - Have you met any of the other teenage boys staying in the hotel?
A - I’ve spoken to one or two by the pool. Like me they are here with their
parents who have come to chill out and do nothing and they are bored too.
C - Have you brought any kit to play football, shorts, boots and the like.

A - Oh yes. Since I’ve been playing football I’ve always taken my boots with me
on holiday, just in case, plus, I packed several pairs of shorts and t-shirts in my
suitcase.
C - Excellent. Have you ever been to Italy before?
A - No, I haven’t. I’ve only ever been to France. My grandparents have a

holiday home in The Dordogne.
C - That sounds lovely. How many times a year do you go to France.
A - So far I’ve been 5 times. The place is very beautiful, it’s in the country but
there’s nothing to do at night.
C - I imagine your parents think it’s great.
A - Oh yes. My mother has been visiting the same place since she was a young
girl and she never gets bored of it. My father has just decided to buy a house
there too so we can spend even more boring holidays there. It sucks!
C - Next year you’re 17 maybe they will let you have a holiday with your
friends.
A - Money is the problem. I have an allowance but it’s not much so I work in
the local supermarket at weekends to earn a little extra. I like going out with
my mates too, so I’ve always spent everything in a couple of days. I’ve never
been good at saving money.
C - I’m the same. My father has had me working here for the last 2 years
because he can keep an eye on me and he can pay me less than the other staff.
It does have its perks I do get to play football all the time.
A - Who do you support? I’m a Manchester United fan.
C - Juventus, they have been my favourite team since I was 5 years old.
A - Good team but Man. United are better……….
